KIRKWOOD, NY – Champions from across the Northeast are set to congregate at Five Mile Point Speedway on Columbus Day weekend.
When the sixth edition of the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals gets underway at Five Mile Point Friday-Saturday Oct. 11-12, a diverse cross-section of talent will be present for the ‘Working Man’s Race’ of 2013. The event is headlined on Saturday (Oct. 12) by a 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified main paying $5,000-plus to the winner, including the Alpine Building Supply ‘Roll the Dice Challenge’ cash and offers $455 just to take the green flag.
Bonus money continues to stream in for the event, promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media. More than $10,000 in bonus cash, contingency awards and product certificates will be distributed. Lap money for the 50-lap feature has climbed to $1,830, including a hefty $500 Halfway Leader Bonus presented by Dale and Sue Smith of Afton, N.Y. The Smiths will have sponsored an award for the driver leading halfway in each of the six Short Track SuperNationals events.
A complete list of the perks and special awards can be found on the official Short Track SuperNationals website: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com under the SuperNationals tab.
A number of Northeast champions have set their sights on the SuperNationals, led by 64-year-old Mike Colsten of Binghamton, N.Y., who not only fought off serious health issues, but earned his fourth career Five Mile Point championship and first since 1991. Colsten was diagnosed with mesothelioma during the off-season with a grim prognosis. Colsten miraculously not only returned to driving, but never finished outside the top 10 in 20 events contested at Five Mile Point during the season. ‘The Recycler’ looks to defend his home turf at the SuperNationals.
Jackie Brown Jr., a first-time Modified champion at N.Y.’s Accord Speedway, will make his SuperNational s debut with his family fielded Hig Fab Chassis No. 6X. Brown earned the most lucrative victory of his career at Accord on Sept. 20 when he topped the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour ‘King of the Catskills’ event, worth $5,000, by defeating superstar Danny Johnson.
From the high-banked Woodhull (N.Y.) Raceway, Donnie Lawson brings short-track experience to the SuperNationals. Lawson, who resides in Woodhull, N.Y., won the track’s Modified title for the first time in his career. He was also the Friday night Sportsman champion at Black Rock (N.Y.) Speedway. Lawson will drive his No. 11 at the SuperNationals.
Adding another chapter to his Hall of Fame career, Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, N.J., topped the New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway point standings after a year-long battle with Ryan Godown. Pauch won six New Egypt Speedway features – including the 700th main event of his career Sept. 28 – to clinch the title. ‘The Kid’ has earned two top-five SuperNationals finishes in the last four years: third in 2011 and fourth last October after leading through the final four circuits. He will bring his Speed Raceway No. 1 to Five Mile Point for the SuperNationals.
For the third time in four years, Duane Howard utilized his 358-Modified prowess at Grandview (Pa.) Speedway to earn the $10,000-plus American Racer East Coast Modified Cup overall title in ‘13. Oley, Pa.’s Howard, the 2011 Short Track SuperNationals winner, aims to be the event’s first repeat victor driving the Glenn Hyneman-owned Keystone Racing No. 126 Teo-Pro car.
A former winner at Five Mile Point – including the prestigious Southern Tier Open in 2011 – Danny Creeden of Middletown, N.Y., added a 358-Modified title to his resume this season at his hometown track, Orange County (N.Y.) Fair Speedway. Creeden was a top-10 finisher in the SuperNationals last year following an early tangle. Creeden put his name in the headlines over the summer when he won the New York Truck Parts ‘Battle of the Bullring’ taking home $5,925 in August at Accord Speedway.
Representing the wide and fast Bridgeport Speedway in South Jersey, Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa., plans to make his first SuperNationals attempt. Watt enjoyed a breakout season, taking the big-block Modified crown at Bridgeport for the first time. He also won the ‘Clash at the Can’ over a 67-car field at Pa.’s Penn Can Speedway in June, a career highlight race.
Kevin Hartnett of Barto, Pa., earned the Penn Can Speedway championship for the second time in his career. Hartnett, 44 years old, won just a single feature during the year but demonstrated unparalleled consistency, finishing outside the top-eight only once all season. He clinched the title one week prior to Season Championship Night. Hartnett plans to drive his brand-new Hig Fab No. 88 in the SuperNationals.
Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, N.Y., added Glen Ridge (N.Y.) Motorsports Park to his list of title-winning venues in 2013. Varin dominated the Ridge during the ’13 campaign, winning seven features en route to the championship. Varin will return to the seat of Tom Umbenhauer’s No. 19 for the SuperNationals: the same car he drove to a second-place finish last year. Varin is one of eight drivers to boast perfect attendance in all five SuperNationals events.
Mike Mahaney, a 24-year-old rising star from King Ferry, N.Y., took home his first championship at I-88 Speedway in Afton, N.Y., this season. Mahaney will drive his I-88 championship-winning ride, the Jim Shear No. 77x, in the SuperNationals event. Mahaney was a star of summer when he took home the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ at I-88 Speedway in July. The 48-lap race netted him $8,249.
The aforementioned champions will be part of a talented field for the ’13 SuperNationals, with two full days of racing on tap.
