Stakes Go Up: Sowle Enterprises & Glen Ridge Motorsports Park Boost ‘Gobbler’ Modified Winner’s Share To $6,711; November 30 Thanksgiving Weekend Event At Accord Speedway Becomes More Lucrative; Bonuses Add Up

ACCORD, NY – The stakes have gone higher for the ‘Gobbler’ at Accord Speedway.

When the big-block/small-block Modified drivers roll out for their 50-lap feature event Saturday, November 30 at the Ulster County quarter-mile oval, they will be competing for an impressive $6,711 winner’s share, up from the initial $5,000 posted top prize.

The extra cash comes courtesy of Mike Sowle of Sowle Enterprises, who operates Sowle Trailer Repair in Fultonville, N.Y., and will serve as the new co-promoter of Glen Ridge (N.Y.) Motorsports Park for 2014. Sowle signed on as a ‘Gobbler’ supporter last weekend.

The ‘Gobbler’ is a unique Thanksgiving weekend special to be held at Accord for the first time in 11 years as a co-promotion involving Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LCC and Accord Speedway owners Gary and Donna Palmer.

Modifieds will race 50 laps – now for an increased $6,711 to win - plus bonuses, lap money and other incentives. Fifth-place pays $1,000, with $500 reserved for 10th place and $300 to take the green flag. Open and Crate 602 Sportsman (25 laps, $1,000 to win) and the first Ron Wright Memorial 20-lap event for Pure Stocks/Street Stocks complete the dirt-track finale for 2013.

“Mike Sowle has gained the nickname ‘Santa’ for all he has done to support dirt Modified racing this year,” said event co-promoter Deyo. “He is already working to better Glen Ridge for next season. He’s hoping to use the ‘Gobbler’ to promote his track and business.

“A $6,711 winner’s share for a 50-lap event on a quarter-mile track should provide some great incentive for teams to keep their cars together for one final big-paying race!”

Sowle was anxious to be part of the special event.

“We’re promoting Glen Ridge weekly next year, but we still want to give back to as many racers as we can,” Sowle said. “We’re only looking to get more involved.”

This season alone, Sowle has sponsored bonuses at Glen Ridge, Fonda (N.Y.), Albany-Saratoga (N.Y.), Lebanon Valley (N.Y.) and Rolling Wheels (N.Y.). He is also a marketing partner for the Friday Night Lights portion of Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds. He recently announced plans to co-promote weekly racing at Glen Ridge next season, a first-time endeavor, and has already completed a number of renovations and upgrades to the facility. Glen Ridge switches to Sundays in ’14, opening up a working relationship with Friday tracks such as Accord.

Already, bonus award sponsors are signing on. United Pump & Tank of Newburgh, N.Y., has posted a $169 Hard Charger Award in the Modified division in memory of late Northeast racing icon Bob Green.

Additionally, the top-three Crate 602 engines across the line in the Sportsman main event will collect bonuses of $250, $125 and $125 thanks to United Pump & Tank.

Bonus money is also being collected for the Ron Wright Memorial Pure Stock/Street Stock event. A longtime attendee of Accord, Orange County (N.Y.) and Bethel (N.Y.) speedways, Wright had a passion for full-fender racing. His son, Kyle, was a former Pure Stock winner at Accord and he was a crew member for his longtime friend Mike Deyo.

Early interest in the ‘Gobbler’ has been strong from fans and competitors representing each of the three divisions. One of the first Modified drivers to commit to the event was Canadian standout Stewart Friesen. Last Friday at Glen Ridge, Friesen’s Tadd Parks-owned No. 1 sported a ‘Gobbler’ logo on its sail panels to help spread the word.

“You’ve got to think outside the box sometimes,” noted Friesen, 30, who has never won a feature at Accord Speedway. “With the right weather, that race could be huge. It’s great for a driver like me looking to make some extra money before the winter and for fans who want to see one last dirt-track race.”

The first entry was filed by up-and-coming Modified star Anthony Perrego of Montgomery, N.Y., who recently finished third in the track’s ‘King of the Catskills’ season-end Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour finale.

Gates will open for the event at 11 a.m. Hot laps are planned for 1 p.m., with racing at 1:30 p.m.

Camping will be permitted on the speedway grounds on Friday and Saturday nights of the weekend. Campfires in the parking area are permitted so long as they are contained.

“Over the next few weeks, we will be making a series of announcements that will only make this event more attractive,” Deyo said. “We’re hoping it can be the start of a new tradition.”

Previously, on November 30, 2002, Robbie Green of Wallkill, N.Y., won a 100-lap ‘Turkey Chase’ Modified special at Accord, which was run in four 25-lap segments. Segment winners were Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, Pa. (segment No. 1), Rich Ricci Jr. of New Paltz, N.Y. (segment No. 2), and Green (segments No. 3 and 4). A total of 94 cars participated in the ‘02 event, which was well attended.
