SHORT STORY
(radio, TV and other media with limited space)
VONDOHREN,
UMBENHAUER AND MERKEL ARE NASCAR WINNERS AT GRANDVIEW
SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 4, 2013 . . . Point leader Craig VonDohren
worked his way from 26th to 1st to win his fifth 30-lap
NASCAR Whelen 358 Modified race of the season at Grandview Speedway on Saturday
night. Sean Merkel was tops in the 25-lap Late Model feature for the second time
this season and it was point leader Jared Umbenhauer getting his fifth win of
the season in the 25-lap Sportsman feature that closed out WNPV-1440AM Radio
Night.
Young Addison Meitzler led every
lap but the last one in the 30-lap Modified feature race. Craig VonDohren, who
started in 26th spot in the 28 car feature race, worked his way toward the front
and in the second turn of the final lap he was able to charge under Meitzler to
claim the win. Second spot went to Meitzler, who was looking for his first win
since July, 2009, followed by Ray Swinehart, rookie Andy Ressler and Jordan
Umbenhauer.
The 25-lap feature for Late
Models had Sean Merkel going to the front on the drop of the green and never
looking back. Despite numerous caution flags resulting in restarts Merkel was
able to hold the lead and drive to a convincing win over Sam Schlosberg. Third
spot went to Wayne Pfeil followed by Jason Miller and Steve
Nederostek.
The final event of the night had
Ryan Beltz setting the pace on the first lap and leading 18 laps before Jared
Umbenhauer, who had started 15th, charged to the front and led the
rest of the way. Second spot was earned by Brett Kressley followed by Beltz,
Erik Renninger and Brad Brightbill.
Coming up on Saturday, August 10, 7:30 p.m. is the Forrest Rogers
Memorial presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings featuring 50-lapper for Modifieds
paying $10,000 to win plus racing for Late Models and Sportsman. $25 for adults,
$5 for youngsters 6 thru 12. Under 6 admitted FREE. Then on Sunday, August 11, 1
p.m. the Outlaw Enduro Racers in action along with Blast from the Past Vintage
Cars. $10 for adults. Youngsters 12 and under admitted

STORY
VONDOHREN
AND UMBENHAUER GET FIFTH WINS OF THE SEASON, MERKEL TAKES SECOND WIN IN NASCAR
STOCK CAR RACING ACTION AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 4, 2013 . . . It was just one of those
nights that seemed to include a large number of accidents along with the normal
exciting Saturday night stock car racing action at Grandview Speedway. Six time
NASCAR Modified champion and current point leader Craig VonDohren was able to
“pull a win out of the hat” with a low charge under leader Addison Meitzer in
the second turn of the final lap to put his Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken No. 1c in
victory lane in the 30-lap WNPV-1440AM Radio sponsored NASCAR 358 Modified
feature. The win was the Oley, PA racer’s fifth win of the season and earned him
$2750 including the TP Trailers bonus money. In addition there was $150 in fuel
courtesy of VP Racing Fuels.
In the 25-lap main event for
NASCAR Sportsman defending champion and current point leader Jared Umbenhauer
took the lead from Ryan Beltz late in the race and drove to victory. The win was
the fifth of the season for the Richland, PA driver with the Eastern Rigging No.
5. And Sean Merkel of Boyertown, PA was able to run away and hide from the
competition despite a large number of cautions earning his second victory of the
season with his Kochel Equipment No. 118 in the 25-lap NASCAR Late Model feature
race.
It was all Addison Meitzler in
the 30-lap Modified feature. At least that is the way it was until the second
turn of the final lap when Craig VonDohren, charging from 26th
starting spot made an aggressive move to get under Meitzler, who had led from
the drop of the green, to take the lead
and charge to victory. Meitzler , once he was able to regain control of his race
car, was able to hold on for a second place finish. For Meitzler (Kutztown) it
was his best effort of the season but it was no solace for the fact that he was
so close to his first win since July, 2009. Ray Swinehart (Perkiomenville)
looking for his second win of the weekend had to settle for third followed by
rookie Andy Ressler (Bechtelsville) and Jordan Umbenhauer (Richland).
With the win VonDohren increased
his point leader in the battle for the NASCAR 358 Modified title while his
challenger, defending champion Duane Howard, was caught up in an early race
multi-car accident that had him towed off and credited with 24th
finishing spot.
Veteran Grandview racer Ryan
Beltz took the top spot at the start of the 25-lap feature for Sportsman leading the 25-car starting
field. Beltz was able to hold the top spot until the 18th lap. After
a battle with Brett Kressley and Jared Umbenhauer the lead was relinguished by
Beltz to point leader Umbenhauer. At the finish it was Umbenhauer (Richand)
leading the way with Brett Kressley (Orefield) very close behind. Beltz
(Harleysville) settled for third followed by Erik Renninger (Bridgewater, NJ)
and Brad Brightbill (Sinking Springs).
The 25-lap feature for the
NASCAR Late Model feature was all about Sean Merkel as the Boyertown, PA racer
was in front of the 16 car starting field for the entire event. Several cautions
closed up the field behind the leader and each time he was able to pull away
from the field and he had a healthy lead at the finish. Sam Schlosberg (Green
Lane) finished second while Wayne Pfeil (Mohnton), who was in the hunt
throughout the entire feature, had to settle for third. Jason Miller (New
Tripoli) claimed fourth with Steve Nederostek (Walnutport) getting
fifth.
Qualifying heat races, each 12 laps in
distance on the one-third-mile, banked clay track for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds
were won by Terry Meitzler, Bobby Gunther Walsh and Addison Meitzler. The
Modified consolation race, 10 laps in distance, went to nine time track champion
Jeff Strunk. Qualifiers for the Late Models, 8 laps, were won by Sean Merkel and
Jason Miller. In the eight lap Sportsman qualifiers wins went to Erik Renninger,
Scott Davis Jr. and “Disco Joe” Fanelli.
The Hard Charger award for the Modifieds
sponsored by Bobby Gunther Walsh and sponsors went to Craig VonDohren who came
from 26th starting spot to first for the victory. The Searock Lawn Care Hard Charger award for
Sportsman was earned by Jared Umbenhauer charging from 15th to first
and the Jeff Teets’ Salvage Transport Hard Charger award for Late Models went to
Mike Kellner who gained just four spots.
Cargo Trailer Sales of Lansdale had $50 gift
certificates for 10th place finishers in each feature while Dan’s Deli has their
special hoagies for the leader of each feature at the halfway point. VP Racing Fuels has a $150 product bonus for
the first NASCAR 358 Modified feature finisher using their fuel, $100 product
bonus for the first Late Model feature finisher using their fuel and $75 product
bonus for the first Sportsman feature finisher using their fuel and carrying VP
decals on the race car and VP patch on uniform.
Coming up
on Saturday, August 10, 7:30 p.m. Forrest Rogers Memorial presented by Pioneer
Pole Buildings featuring 50-lapper for Modifieds paying $10,000 to win plus
racing for Late Models and Sportsman. $25 for adults, $5 for youngsters 6 thru
12. Under 6 admitted FREE. Then on Sunday, August 11, 1 p.m. the Outlaw Enduro
Racers in action along with Blast From the Past Vintage Cars. $10 for adults.
