HUNT AND HORTON GET THRILLING WINS
AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY
Bridgeport, NJ (August 4, 2013) - A night of four
feature events at
Bridgeport Speedway produced a first, second and third
time winner as
Ian Humphreys, Dave Hunt, and Jimmy Horton picked up wins
in the
Crate/Sportsman and Big Block Modified features. Ron Frees earned
his eighth win in the Outlaw Stock Car main event.
Dave Hunt started
out with a win in the held-over feature event from
July 20th. Bob
Sarkisian was the race leader for the first six
circuits and had built a
sizeable lead before a lap six caution. The
caution flag for the disabled
car of Eric Kormann erased Sarkisian's
advantage and put second place Dave
Hunt right alongside of Sarkisian
for the restart. During the caution
period, Dominick Buffalino headed
to the pits with the Michael #51m.The
restart was called back when
Hunt went a little early and then Don Cogdill
III ran into problems in
turn one. Ryan Watt, the four time feature winner
who came into the
night with the point lead, headed to the pits with his
Roberts Racing
#14w. When the green flag waved for the start of lap seven,
Hunt took
the lead from the outside line as Sarkisian, Tommy Beamer and
Jack
Swain followed. After starting sixteenth, Richie Pratt Jr. made his
move into the top five. A flat tire on lap thirteen had Beamer headed
to the pits as the caution flag waved. Swain began to pressure
Sarkisian for second as Pratt sized up Swain for a move. Swain took
over second on lap fifteen as 2012 Bridgeport Track Champion Rick
Laubach followed into third. Pratt relinquished his fifth place run on
lap twenty-one when he exited with mechanical difficulties. The
leaders
were in lapped traffic on the final lap as they raced to the
checkered
flag. Swain closed the gap on Hunt but lapped traffic played
a role as
Laubach made a last circuit move to take over second as Hunt
sailed to his
second win of the season. Following Hunt, Laubach and
Swain were Sarkisian
and Mike Iles to complete the top five.
The regularly scheduled Modified
Feature event saw Ron Roberts take
the early race lead until Eric Kormann
took over on lap three in the
Hewlett #901. Wade Hendrickson moved the
Pondish #6 into third on lap
three and then took over second from Roberts
two tours later. Lap
eight saw Roberts Racing teammates, Roberts and Watt
battle for third
with Watt taking the position. Jimmy Horton moved ahead of
Roberts to
take over fourth. Sarkisian brought out the yellow just before
the
half way mark when he came to a stop on the homestretch off of turn
four. Kormann led the field to the restart but they were three wide
for second as Watt, Hendrickson and Horton raced for the runner-up
spot. Horton came up with the position with Watt gaining third.
Pratt
slipped past Hendrickson to take over fourth. A comfortable
margin then
separated each of the top four cars until lap traffic came
into play with
five laps to go. As Kormann approached the slower
cars, Horton closed the
gap. As Kormann navigated his way through the
traffic, Horton made his
move and came away with the lead on lap
twenty-three. With the checkered
waving, the top three of Horton,
Kormann, and Watt were nose to tail.
Pratt raced home in fourth with
Hendrickson finishing in fifth. Horton's
third win of the season and
121st of his career at Bridgeport Speedway also
earned Horton a
starting spot in the Short Track Supernationals at Five
Mile Point
Speedway in October. Travis Hill, Rick Laubach, and Wade
Hendrickson
were the victors in the Big Block Modified qualifying events.
The
consolation race was taken by Corey Andersen.
Ian Humphreys, who
was crowned as the Bridgeport Rookie Champion at
the end of June, won his
first Crate/Sportsman feature of his career
in the twenty lap main event.
Ryan Wozunk and Humphreys led the field
to the start. After a lap one
caution, Wozunk led the first four
circuits. Humphreys mounted his
challenge from the outside line and
raced side by side with Wozunk until he
edged into the lead on lap
five. Humphreys quickly drove away from the
field and drove
unchallenged to his first win despite several caution flags
that
erased his advantage. Wozunk had a strong effort to finish second
ahead of Marc Herman. Mike Cogdill pressured Herman up to the
checkered flag to finish fourth as Brett Ballard came home in fifth.
The Crate/Sportsman heat races were captured by Ian Humphreys and
Jesse
Bonaduce.
In Outlaw Stock action, Jimmy Avery led the first lap as Brian
Ludwig
charged past Jimmy Hughes and then Avery to take the lead on lap
two.
Ron Frees raced side by side with Hughes for the second spot and
gained the position on lap five. A lap eight restart had Ludwig and
Frees restarting side by side with Frees taking the lead. TJ Henry
made it a three way race for second as he raced with Ludwig and Tom
Wills, Jr. but a right front flat took him out of contention on the
final lap. Frees raced to his eighth win of the season followed by
Ludwig, Wills, Jr., Avery and Henry. The Outlaw Stock Car heat race
winners were Ron Frees and Jimmy Avery.
