News from the King of the Can -
'It's Good To Be King'
For Immediate Release/Oct. 10,
2012
Susquehanna County Royalty: Penn
Can's Signature 'King of the Can' Spectacular This Weekend; Modified Field
Building for Friday's 13th Annual
50-lapper
SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Penn Can Speedway's
signature event - the 'King of the Can' is set for this weekend.
Headlining the weekend is a 50-lap
big-block/small-block Modified event offering $5,000 to the winner and $313 to
take the green flag this Friday night (Oct. 12) at the Susquehanna County oval.
This year's event marks the 13th 'King of the Can' running with sponsorship
support from VP Racing Fuels, Pioneer Pole Buildings, Gary's U-Pull-It and Don's
Automotive Mall.
Joining the Modifieds on Friday
night are Crate 602 Sportsman ($1,000 to win) and Street Stocks ($650 to
win).
Gates open at 5:15 p.m. with hot
laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
Adult admission is $22 (Adults) or
$20 with the ticket stub from Penn Can's most recent regular program on Sept. 7.
Seniors (62 and up) and Students (ages 13-17) are $20. Kids 12 and under are
FREE. Pit admission is $35.
The '12 'King of the Can' is a
co-promotion involving track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox and special
events coordinator Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media. Fans will not want to
miss this year's Victory Lane ceremonies as the winner receives a 'throne'
appropriate only for a 'King of the Can'
winner!
And, of course, drivers will be
greeted by a recently widened Penn Can oval for the first time. Track management reworked the speedway to
provide additional racing room following the final points-paying show on Sept.
7.
Stewart Friesen of
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., is the defending 'King of the Can' Modified winner.
Friesen executed a late-race slide job on Jeff Strunk to score a $5,000-plus
payout last year. Friesen returns this year driving Marty Burdick's No. 85 in
search of a repeat victory. The
29-year-old will be available behind the grandstands prior to the start of
racing on Friday with autograph photos to meet
fans.
Joey Grammes of Lehighton, Pa., was
the '12 Penn Can champion and won the Season Championship Night feature on Sept.
7. He is a past 'King of the Can' (2006)
and has high hopes for a return to glory this
year.
Matt Sheppard of Waterloo,
N.Y., wants to add a 'King of the Can' triumph to his racing resume with Jeff
Brownell's No. 9s. Sheppard, 30, has never won at Penn Can Speedway but has
posted finishes of fourth and eighth, respectively, in his last two
efforts.
Grandview (Pa.) Speedway champion/East Coast American Racer Dirt Modified Cup title winner Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., leads the southeastern Pennsylvania contingent with the Atlas Paving No. 66 that also includes $50,000 Freedom 76 winner Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa., Coalcracker 72 Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway $10,000 winner Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa., two-time Penn Can Modified champion Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., and former Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway champ Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa.

Speedway $10,000 winner Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa., two-time Penn Can Modified champion Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., and former Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway champ Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa.
Fresh off a $6,000 career-defining
victory on Oct. 6 at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway, 'Showtime' Danny Tyler of
Cottekill, N.Y., ventures to Penn Can knowing his family-fielded No. 97T will
automatically be part of the post-qualifying redraw. Tyler earned the perk by
winning last weekend's SuperNationals.
Danny Johnson of Rochester, N.Y.,
who won the June $10,000-plus 'Clash at the Can' at Penn Can, is expected to be
a contender with Mike Payne's race car. Gary Tomkins of Clifton Springs, N.Y.,
will drive a No. 30+ owned by Tom Oleski with power provided by Bobby Trapper.
Pat Ward scored the most lucrative
win of his career in early October at N.Y.'s Fulton Speedway, pocketing more
than $20,000 in the Outlaw 200. Ward, of Genoa, N.Y., hopes to improve on his
third-place '11 'King of the Can' finish this season.
From the Garden State, Ryan Godown
of Ringoes, N.J., returns to Penn Can for the first time since a strong
26th-to-second drive in the June 'Clash at the Can' 60-lapper. Godown has since
secured the Modified championship at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway for his John
Chemidlin-backed No. 747 operation.
Fellow New Egypt regular/Big
Diamond Speedway winner Neal Williams of Pittsgrove, N.J., has filed an entry
with his Fred Vahlsing-owned No. 323OV. Williams comes off a strong 358-Modified
effort during Super DIRT Week in Syracuse,
N.Y.
Modified racing's breakout driver
of '12, Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, N.Y., will debut a new Troyer No. 77x
fielded by Southern Tier owner Jim Shear. I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway champion Mitch
Gibbs of North Norwich, N.Y., was a second-place finisher in the 2010 'King of
the Can' and knows his way around the facility. He is set to contend in the
Bryan and 'Cork' O'Hara No. 2G.
From Five Mile Point Speedway,
Modified champ Justin Holland of Kauneonga Lake, N.Y., has set his sights on the
'King of the Can' after driving from 22nd to fifth last year. Accord (N.Y.)/Five
Mile Point standout Danny Creeden of Middletown, N.Y., will pilot the Barry
White-owned No. 131 in the event. Donnie Lawson Jr. of Woodhull, N.Y., has filed
an early entry, as well.
Penn Can's tough field of weekly
Modifieds will be represented by points runner-up Mike Schane of Lake Ariel,
Pa., five-time '12 feature winner Kevin Hartnett of Barto, Pa., Bobby Trapper of
Scranton, Pa., former 'King of the Can' Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa., Dan
Pompey of Glenwood, Pa., Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel, Pa., and more.
As always at Penn Can Speedway, the
short track is the equalizer!
High-dollar teams have no advantage over the weekly racers on the
tire-wear-friendly track.
A long list of bonus and special
awards has been lined up for 'King of the Can' racers. The giveaways will begin
at the drivers' meeting with a drawing for two 'Loyalty Award' packages courtesy
of Shiley Fabrication (Williamstown, Pa.) and S&D Bodyline (Bath, Pa.).
Drivers who have attended all three '12 BD Motorsports Media events are
eligible.
Also, a pair of $50 gas cards will
be given away via a random draw of early entries at the drivers'
meeting.
Street Stock drivers will have no
entry free for Friday's program. It has
been covered by Trackside Products proprietors Al and Paula Wilcox of Endicott,
N.Y. The top-three Street Stock finishers from Friday are guaranteed the eighth,
ninth and 10th starting positions for Saturday's Race of Champions-sanctioned
program.
The first 300 fans through the gate
will receive a FREE can koozie courtesy of race sponsor Pioneer Pole Buildings.
Rules for the 'King of the Can'
should encourage a diverse field of Modifieds to congregate on the Penn Can
oval. Big-block (2,500 lbs.) or small-block (2,400 lbs.) engines will be
permitted. Gasoline or methanol is allowed. Teams may run sail panels (specs
detailed on the web) or traditional windows. Any American Racer stamp is
accepted with the following compounds: Front tires - American Racer SD 33 or
harder; Left-Rear - SD 33, 38 or 44; Right-Rear - SD 38, 44, 48 or 50.
For the Crate 602 Sportsman event,
a maximum gear rule of 6.29 will be in effect. The 6,200 rev chip will not be
mandatory. Teams may run steel wheels (2,375 lbs.) or aluminum wheels (2,450
lbs.). The tire rule will mirror that of the Modifieds with one exception: the
DIRTcar Hoosier Sportsman tire will be permitted so long as it is not softer
than the legal American Racer compounds.
The Street Stock event will be
contested using 2012 standard Street Stock rules.
All divisions will set heat lineups
with a draw for position.
Penn Can Speedway's second day of
the 'King of the Can' weekend is set for Sat., Oct. 13 with a full program
including Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman, Race of Champions Street Stocks,
CRSA 305 Sprint Cars, Four Cylinders, Factory Stocks and XCel 600 Modifieds.
Gates open at 3 p.m. on Saturday with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing planned
at 6 p.m.
Saturday admission is $14 for
Adults and $2 off with the Friday (Oct. 12) ticket stub. Seniors (62 and over)
and Students (ages 13-17) are $12. Kids 12 and under are FREE. Pit admission is
$30.
