Tough Trio: Doug Manmiller, Justin Holland & Joey Grammes Hope to Build on Career Seasons at Five Mile Point Speedway VP Racing Fuels-Pioneer Pole Buildings Short Track SuperNationals Oct. 6; Race Becomes Increasingly Lucrative for Weekend Racers
KIRKWOOD, NY - A Short Track SuperNationals presented by VP Racing Fuels and Pioneer Pole Buildings victory could build on a career season for three of the pre-registered Modified drivers.
Empire State racer Justin Holland and Keystone State drivers Doug Manmiller and Joey Grammes all reached career milestones during the regular season. Now, the trio embarks on historic Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y., for the 2012 'Working Man's Race' event headlined by a lucrative 50-lap event for the big-block/small-block Modifieds. The fifth anniversary Short Track SuperNationals, set for Oct. 6, rewards drivers with $455 to take the green flag plus a growing list of bonuses and special awards!
Shoemakersville, Pa., driver Manmiller recorded his first ‘crown jewel’ race victory on Labor Day weekend when he guided Josh Biever's No. 46 to a $10,000 payday in the Coalcracker 72-lap event at Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway. Manmiller swept the night, winning his heat race, the Cash Dash and besting Craig Von Dohren in the main.
Manmiller, 44, will bring Biever's Morrison-powered Bicknell to Five Mile Point for the SuperNationals. Last year, 'the Handler' hustled into the top five late in the 50-lap feature only to have a right-rear tire go down.
"We had a good car last year," reflected Manmiller, who finished second in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified standings at Grandview (Pa.) Speedway this season with two victories. "Hopefully, we can shake off last year's bad luck and be in the mix at the end."
Holland, 33, of Kauneonga Lake, N.Y., knows quite well how much a SuperNationals victory means. Holland's career highlight took place in 2010 when - as a Modified rookie - he shocked the SuperNationals 72-car field and drove his Rockbusters No. 280 to Victory Lane.
Now, Holland is well known across the Modified landscape. He attained his first Modified championship in 2012 at Five Mile Point, his second season as a regular in the facility's headline division. Holland won four Five Mile Point Modified features this season, including the 50-lap extra-distance Season Championship finale on Labor Day weekend. He was also a victor at N.Y.’s I-88 Speedway.
Holland's JPM-powered Teo-Pro car is certain to be a SuperNationals factor.
"It's a race I look forward to for sure," said Holland, who earned nearly $7,000 for his '10 victory. "It's one of the best-paying races we'll run all year and it's at our home track."
Lehighton, Pa., driver Grammes also etched his name as a Modified track champion in '12. The 35-year-old earned the title at Pa.'s Penn Can Speedway. Grammes capped his championship run in fine fashion, driving the Slug 'n Slam Construction No. 5J to a checkered flag on Sept. 7: Championship Night at the Susquehanna County track.
Grammes has raced consistently at Penn Can since 2004 after earning Sportsman championship distinction at the now-closed Lake Moc-A-Tek (Pa.) Speedway. Grammes, who drives equipment fielded and maintained by his older brother Brad, has attended all four SuperNationals events contested thus far. He has two top-five finishes (fourth - '06 and fifth - '09) and never placed outside the top-10 in the SuperNationals, recording seventh-place efforts in '10 and '11.
"We're gearing up for that race," said Grammes, who indicated that his team may field two cars in the event. "Looking at the purse increase for this year is pretty big for us. Knowing you're going to take home almost $500 just to get in the show helps a lot."
The fifth 'Working Man's Race' at Five Mile Point is shaping up to be the richest to date for Modified racers. A large number of bonus and award sponsors have signed on to support the SuperNationals in 2012. A complete list, updated frequently, can be found online at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
Registration is currently underway. Entry forms have been posted to the BD Motorsports Media website. Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel, Pa., earned two free pit passes to the SuperNationals via a drawing of the first 10 early entries received. The drawing took place in Victory Lane at Penn Can Speedway Aug. 24. All remaining pre-entered drivers who file an entry prior to Sept. 30 will be part of a second drawing to be held at the drivers' meeting on race day for a pair of $50 gas cards. Registration in advance is just $15: $20 less than it had been in 2006 when the SuperNationals was first contested!
Modified rules allow for big- or small-block engines, gasoline or methanol, sail panels or windows, an open tire rule (run weekly at a Northeast dirt Modified facility), with a draw for position setting the heat-race starting orders. Complete rules and race procedures have been posted on the BD Motorsports Media website.
The Comfort Inn of Binghamton, N.Y., 1000 Front Street just miles from the speedway off Interstate 81 Exit 5, serves as the host hotel with a group rate of $99/night. Contact the Comfort Inn by phone at 607.724.3297 and mention "SuperNationals" to receive the discounted rate.
Joining the Modifieds on the program are Street Stocks (under 2011 Race of Champions rules, 25 laps) and a Four Cylinder Open event (18 laps). ALL racing activity takes place on Saturday (Oct. 6) with an open practice on Friday (Oct. 5) evening.
Admission Prices
For Saturday's (Oct. 6) program, Adult grandstand admission is $19. For Seniors (ages 62 and over) and Youth (Ages 13-17), admission is $15. Kids 12 and under are admitted FREE.
An affordable 'Family Five Pack' promotion returns this year. For $45, a family receives two Adult tickets, three Senior and/or Youth tickets, five hot dogs and five sodas.

Camping
Camping is permitted and encouraged at the Short Track SuperNationals on Friday and Saturday nights. Camping is FREE of charge. There are no hookups. Those wishing to stay with their campers on the backstretch must purchase a pit pass as the area is an active pit during Saturday's event.
All individuals planning to camp must use the grassy area off the backstretch. Camping will not be permitted in the turn-four pit area or spectator parking lot with respect to the neighboring community.
Previous Short Track SuperNationals Modified winners include Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., (2011), Holland (2010), Kevin Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa. (2009) and Mike Ricci of Rosendale, N.Y. (2006).
