BIG DIAMOND AND NEW EGYPT JOIN FORCES
TO HONOR SPECIAL RACE FANS
During the month
of July, both the Big Diamond and New Egypt Speedways host racing events in
memory of extraordinary race fans.
On July 6th, the
Big Diamond Speedway will again host the Georgie Stevenson Memorial Race. This
event has become one of the highlights of the Big Diamond
season.
Georgie Stevenson
was a young racing fan who lost his six year battle with cancer at the tender
age of twelve. In spite of his own pain and discomfort, Georgie wanted to help
those who suffered from similar illnesses and spent much of his time raising
money and encouraging others. Even while he was hospitalized - sometimes for
extended periods of time - Georgie could be seen spending time with other young
patients, perhaps wheeling them down the hallways of the hospital with their
intravenous poles in tow.
Georgie asked his
family to carry on with his efforts after his passing.
The Georgie
Stevenson Memorial Race is one of the fund raising events that the Stevenson
family supports to raise money for other families who are facing similar battles
to the one that Georgie fought.
On July 28, the
New Egypt Speedway will once again hold their annual Friends of Mike race, a
race that has grown into a full day event over the years. The Friends of Mike
event features entertainment, food and a Chinese auction that has racing fans
spending the entire day at the New Egypt Speedway, a day that is culminated with
the running of the Friends of Mike 100 lapper for the Modifieds in addition to
Sportsman and Outlaw Stock features.
Mike Rogie was a
loyal racing fan who lived very near to the New Egypt Speedway. He was only
thirty-eight years old when cancer claimed his life. New Egypt Speedway track
personal, competitors and fans have honored Rogie with the Friends of Mike race
ever since. Sadly, Rogie passed away on the day of the first Friends of Mike
event.
Through the
cooperation of the Big Diamond and New Egypt Speedways, these two racing events
will have something else in common this season.
The format for
the Georgie Stevenson Memorial this season is a pair of twenty lap feature
events for the 358 Modifieds at the Big Diamond Speedway. The winner of these
events will be awarded a guaranteed starting spot in New Egypt's Friends of Mike
race. If the twin twenties are won by two different drivers than a coin toss
will be used to determine who will receive the guaranteed starting spot in the
Friends of Mike race.
Likewise, the
winner of the Friends of Mike 100 lap race will be awarded a guaranteed starting
spot in the Coalcracker '72 to be run on Sunday, September 2 at the Big Diamond
Speedway.
By working
together, these two racing facilities will offer an additional incentive to
their drivers while finding yet another way to honor two dedicated racing
fans.
