ARDC CHAMPION PROMOTES SAFETY WITH "THUMBS UP" CAMPAIGN

Drew Heistand is a father, a policeman and the 2011 ARDC Champion.

And he has found a way to bring these three roles together to help to promote safety among school age children.

The students of the Wrightsville Elementary School were paid a visit this week by Sergeant Drew Heistand of the Wrightsville Police Department. Heistand spoke to the students about the importance of following the rules of safety. Heistand emphasized the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike or a skateboard. He spoke to the more than four hundred students about how important it is that they wear their seat belt whenever they are riding in a car. The students were urged to give a "thumbs up" when they see a police officer to indicate that everyone in the car is wearing their seat belt.

If the students were willing to make a commitment to follow these few simple rules, the 2011 ARDC Champion invited them to place their thumbprint on his #1 ARDC Midget as Heistand and his fellow competitors prepare to return to action this weekend at the Williams Grove Speedway.

Wrightsville Elementary School Principal, Don Gillette is, himself, an avid racing fan so he decided to add his own stipulation to the program. Gillette promised his students that he would shave his head and mustache if Heistand wins the ARDC race at the Williams Grove Speedway this weekend. Gillette was willing to take the chance of being clean shaven for the first time in nearly forty years even though Heistand is the most recent ARDC winner at Williams Grove and has three consecutive second place finishes to show for his three previous efforts at Williams Grove.

Of course, there are more than twenty other ARDC competitors who will have something to say about Heistand's ability to pull off a back to back performance at Williams Grove but there are more than four hundred Wrightsville Elementary Students cheering him on. That's a pretty good incentive and he's got the thumbprints to prove it!
