HOWARD STEERS PERFECT RACECAR TO FRIDAY NIGHT ICEBREAKER V WEEKEND AT SELINSGROVE WIN

BY JR KENNERUP

Selinsgrove, Pa. On Friday night at the Selinsgrove Speedway for the opening night of the Race of Champions sanctioned Icebreaker V Weekend. Duane Howard completely dominated the 25 lap 358 Modified feature as he led wire to wire to claim the $3,400 victory in cash and prizes.

Howard of Oley, Pa. who started third bolted into the lead on the opening lap by the second turn as he snuck under pole sitter Danny Johnson. Once in front Howard easily handled the star studded field en route to his first career Selinsgrove Speedway feature win.

Johnson of Rochester, NY who fell back to as low as fourth in the running order made a text book three wide up the middle pass to go from fourth to second on the final restart of the race on lap 12. Danny then held off the relentless challenges of Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa. to capture second. Ryan Godown of Ringoes, NJ came from 13th to finish fourth with Stewart Friesen of Niagara on the Lake, Ontario ending up in fifth.

Danny Johnson and Shawn Reimert brought the stout 24 car field to green with third place starter Duane Howard shocking everyone by motoring past the front row to get the lead by the time the field reached turn two on the opening lap. Johnson, Doug Manmiller, Reimert, and Stewart Friesen followed the high flying Howard.

Following a lap three restart which saw Howard once again open up a huge lead. Friesen rim rode the big turns one and two cushion to go from fifth to second with Manmiller still in third, Johnson dropping back to fourth, and defending RoC champion Billy Decker now in fifth.

With Howard nearly a full straightaway in front the battle was furious for second with Friesen, Manmiller, and Johnson engaged in some outstanding racing.

The yellow would come out on lap 12 and on the restart the field bunched up just before the green came out and this juggled the top five running order. However the final yellow of the race would come out before a lap was officially scored and this meant the running order reverted back to the lap 12 lineup.

On the restart Howard once again bolted out to a big lead with Johnson now moving from fourth to second with a three wide up the middle pass exiting turn two. This dropped Friesen back to fourth with Manmiller still in third and Jimmy Horton, Jr. now in fifth.

The last ten laps were anti climatic for the win as Howard kept opening up his lead. All of the attention in the final ten circuits was centered on Ryan Godown who had the fastest car on the track. Godown who started 13th moved into fifth on lap 18 and into fourth on lap 21.

At the checkers Howard in for the win by 3.928 seconds over Johnson, Manmiller, Godown, and Friesen.

Shiley’ s Fabrication / Zemco Speed Equipment $100 heat wins for the 43 cars entered were won by Shawn Reimert, Manmiller, Matt Sheppard, Rick Laubach, and Jimmy Phelps. SMI Racing $25 consi wins were captured by Brian Kressley and Brian Weaver while the Andrew’s Aquatics $200 to win Non – Qualifiers Feature was won by Richie Pratt, Jr.

NOTES; The tacky multi grooved surface took its toll on the engines during the racing program with reported blown motors belonging to Dan Vauter, Randy Chrysler, Brian Weaver, Ryan Grim, Larry Solomon, Craig Von Dohren, and Ryan Watt. Billy Van Pelt had his night come to an end in hot laps as a un tightened front end bolt caused the front end to break and he spun into the turn three wall. Colt Harris then crashed into Van Pelt breaking the w link on his car with both cars being done for the evening. For the second year in a row Danny Tyler qualified only to be disqualified in post race tech with a carburetor rule infraction while two time race winner Pat Ward failed to make weight after his consi win. 32 RoC big block Modifieds were on hand hot lapping with Larry Wight being the quickest car in two of the three hot lap sessions held.
