Stars Are Coming From Far and Wide For 2011 Short Track SuperNationals At Five Mile Point Speedway Oct. 8; Capital District Star Bobby Varin Among Latest Entries
KIRKWOOD, NY - Modified racing stars will congregate at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday (Oct. 8) for the fourth annual Short Track SuperNationals.

Talented drivers and teams from far and wide have filed entries and expressed interest in the "Working Man's Race" of 2011 on the quarter-mile oval centrally located off Routes 81 and 17 in Kirkwood, N.Y. The big-block/small-block Modified entry list grows by the day in anticipation of the BD Motorsports Media annual fall event.

Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, N.Y., is among the latest to register for the SuperNationals with the Andy Romano/Marv Pedrick-owned No. 97. Varin, a multi-time Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway champion, finished inside the top-three in points at three New York State venues this season: Glen Ridge, Fonda and Utica-Rome. Additionally, he earned $10,000 paydays in the Utica-Rome New Yorker and Victoria events.

Varin has never missed a Short Track SuperNationals event, attending the very first event at Afton (N.Y.) Speedway in 2006 and returning each year.

The top-three finishers of the 2010 event return this season, led by last October's victor Justin Holland of White Lake, N.Y., runner-up Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, N.J., and third-place Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa. Holland, a Five Mile Point regular, finished second in points at the quarter-mile oval this season. Bates, likewise, based his racing efforts in the Southern Tier at Five Mile Point and Penn Can (Pa.), while Pauch Jr. was a Friday Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway regular. He won the track's Georgie Stevenson Memorial in July and recorded a top-five points finish at Big D.

All three previous SuperNationals victors will be on hand: inaugural victor Mike Ricci of Tillson, N.Y., in the Mastrocola Racing No. 76R, '09 winner Kevin Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa., in the family-owned No. 117 and the aforementioned Holland from '10.

The state of New Jersey sends along two of its most prominent racers in Billy Pauch Sr. of Frenchtown, N.J., the New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway big-block Modified champion and multi-time NES '11 winner Wade Hendrickson of Lawrenceville, N.J. Pauch drives the K&A Excavating No. 1 and Hendrickson straps into the Leach Racing Associates No. 99.

From the Keystone State, Big Diamond and Grandview 358-Modified champ Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa., has set plans to attend in the Norm Hansell Motorsports No. 357. Other Pennsy stars include Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa., Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., Meme DeSantis of Temple, Pa., and 16-year-old Michael Weinert of Tamaqua, Pa.

Penn Can Speedway champion Kevin Hartnett of Troy, Pa., leads the Southern Tier contingent. Hartnett was a four-time winner at the Can this season. Penn Can star Brett Tonkin of Carbondale, Pa., winner of the Championship Night event at the Can in September is set for his first-ever SuperNationals visit.

Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., the Five Mile Point Modified champion for 2011, has registered his potent Tadd Parks-fielded No. 1 Teo-Pro mount. Friesen, 28, a dominant force at Five Mile Point in recent years, has never won the Short Track SuperNationals.

Other notable drivers indicating they will attend include Woodhull (N.Y.) Speedway champion Billy Van Pelt of Westfield, Pa., I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway star Rich Ricci Jr. of New Paltz, N.Y., southeastern New York talent Jeff Heotzler of Wallkill, N.Y., Five Mile Point Southern Tier Open winner Danny Creeden of Middletown, N.Y., rising Accord (N.Y.) Speedway star Danny Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y., New Egypt stalwart Sammy Martz of Somerville, N.J., Fonda driver Marc Johnson of Guildeland, N.Y., Big Diamond's all-time leading Sportsman winner Craig Whitmoyer of Hamburg, Pa. and many more.

The fourth running of the Short Track SuperNationals is headlined by a 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified event paying $5,000 to the winner with a $20 "gambler's fee" plus bonuses and lap money. The event offers $300 to take the green flag - an increase of $100 over last season - thanks to a marketing agreement with Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. of Schuylkill Haven, Pa.

VP Racing Fuels presents the "Champion's Challenge" elimination race for American Racer East Coast Modified Cup track champions with $650 reserved for the winner.

Trackside Products Race of Champions Street Stocks (25 laps), a Four Cylinder Open (18 laps) and a Figure Eight World Championship paying $1,000 to win complete the "split program" which will see support-division qualifying take place in the afternoon. The entire Modified portion of the show is reserved for the evening.

Five Mile Point pit gates unlock at 2 p.m. Grandstand gates open at 3 p.m. Race of Champions Street Stocks and Four Cylinders will have hot laps at 4 p.m. with their qualifying events to follow at 4:45 p.m. Figure Eight hot laps will also take place during this period.

On-track activity for big-block/small-block Modifieds begins at 5:45 p.m. with hot laps. Heat races for the Modifieds get underway promptly at 6:30 p.m. Modifieds will not be on the speedway prior to 5:45 p.m.

For just $40, a family of five can attend the SuperNationals and eat/drink! The 'Family Five Pack' offers two Adult tickets, three Youth (ages 13-17) or Senior (ages 62 and over) tickets plus five hot dogs and five sodas. Do the math: it's just $8 per person!

Tickets purchased individually are also well below the industry norm for Modified special events. Adults are $18, Youth and Seniors are $14 and Kids 12 and under are FREE.

All racing activity will be held on the Saturday portion (Oct. 8) of the program, eliminating hotel costs for budget-minded race teams. Friday night (Oct. 7) will be reserved for an open practice session from 6-9 p.m.

Pit admission is $30 for the Saturday event (Oct. 8) while Friday night's (Oct. 7) open practice is $20.

Joining Pioneer Pole Buildings as corporate partners of the event include VP Racing Fuels, Alpine Building & Post Supply, Bob Hilbert Sportswear and Trackside Products.

In its four-year existence, the SuperNationals has gained a reputation as a racer- and fan-friendly event. A healthy purse and open rules package annually attracts a diverse cross-section of talented weekend racers to do battle.

Last year, Modified upstart Justin Holland of White Lake, N.Y., shocked the 72-car field, holding off Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, N.J., for the SuperNationals victory, bringing home cash and prizes totaling nearly $7,000! Kevin Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa., was the 2009 SuperNationals victor and Mike Ricci of Rosendale, N.Y., topped the inaugural at Afton (N.Y.) Speedway in 2006.

A $1,000 cash bonus for the Modifieds is in place should one driver win both the SuperNationals at Five Mile Point on Saturday (Oct. 8) and the new 'Outlaw 100' event at Brewerton (N.Y.) Speedway on Thursday night (Oct. 6). The highest-finishing driver from Brewerton's Thursday field not to qualify at Five Mile Point Saturday will be added to the main event.
