Memorable Night For Smith Family At Kutztown: Ryan (600cc & 270cc) and Shannon (Slingshot Tour) Share Spotlight; T.J. Lilly Junior Slingshot Winner

KUTZTOWN, PA - It was a memorable night for the Smith family at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.

Ryan Smith doubled up with victories in both the 20-lap wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint feature, which he won dramatically on the final lap, and the 270cc Micro-Sprint 20-lapper, while his sister, Shannon Smith drove from 13th starting position to win the Briggs & Stratton Slingshot Tour 25-lap event.

Ryan Smith, of Kunkletown, Pa., looked like he would settle for runner-up pay in the 600cc headliner. Having started from sixth, Smith watched as Pipersville, Pa.'s Brian Carber wheeled his No. 8c into the lead with a pass of Joey Kay on lap six.

Three circuits later, Smith moved into second and set his sights on race-leading Carber. Using a higher line on the one-fifth-mile clay oval to build momentum, Smith continually pressured Carber. The 22-year-old didn't strike until the final lap.

Pulling even to the inside of Carber down the backstretch, Smith and Carber raced wheel-to-wheel into turn three. With the checkered in the air, Carber's car spun entering turn four and Smith darted under the checkered flag for the victory.

Fourth-starter Jesse Hartman dodged the ensuing chaos for second, followed by Jeff Hartman, Tim Buckwalter and Brett Schoenly.

The 20-lap 270cc Micro-Sprint feature belonged to Ryan Smith from start-to-finish. He led every lap to post his second consecutive victory in the division. For the third straight week at Kutztown, Richie Hartman guided the RTS Chassis No. 2 to a runner-up finish. Opening Night winner Ross Perchak was third, followed by Steve Walters and Kim Glass, up from ninth.

Shannon Smith drove the S&S Speedways No. 23 to the front not once, but twice, to win the Slingshot Tour event. Smith, who started in the seventh row, initially made the move by race leader Jan Acker on lap 18 for the lead. However, a caution negated the pass.

Smith, running the inside line to perfection, cleared Acker again on lap 21 entering the first turn and posted her second win of the young season. Acker settled for a runner-up finish, followed by Travis Bieber, Brett Bieber and Brad Arnold.

T.J. Lilly capitalized on an opening-lap skirmish to take command of the 20-lap Junior Slingshot event at the outset and fended off Joseph Infante for the win. Infante, Chris Kurtz, Dylan Martin and Louden Reimert were second through fifth, respectively.

Racing resumes at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway next Wednesday (June 2) with wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots and Junior Slingshots in competition.

FAIRGROUNDS FODDER: The pit area was jammed with a season-high 92 race cars, including 38 270cc Micro-Sprints, 21 wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 25 Slingshots and eight Junior Slingshots. Despite a special event at nearby Grandview (Pa.) Speedway, the largest crowd thus far in 2010 filled the grandstands....

Matt McAnally ran a strong third in the 270cc feature event until contact with the backstretch wall three laps from the finish. The No. 45 actually rode the wall on two wheels until heading to the pits....

Heat winners were Jeff Hartman, Shane Lewis and Brett Arndt (wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint); Tom Kunsman Jr., Brandon Edgar, Ross Perchak and Eric Bodine (270cc Micro-Sprint); Jordan Henn, James Fulper Jr., Jan Acker and Mike Glass (Slingshot); and Louden Reimert (Junior Slingshot). Charlie Stone and Billy Murphy won the 270cc consolations....

Former Reading Fairgrounds Speedway star and racing legend Red Coffin was among the spectators for Wednesday's program....

Ben Quinones (21st to 10th) was the 600Scene.com Hard Charger in the 600cc division....

It was announced that the winner of Sunday's (May 30) Slingshot $2,000-to-win event at Shellhammer's (Pa.) Speedway will earn a guaranteed starting spot in the Kutztown year-end Aug. 19 show. Additionally, a mini-series will be contested between the two tracks in June (details to follow)....

Mike Glass showed in his heat races that his No. 3 Slingshot would be a victory contender and started the 25-lap event from the pole. However, Glass never got the opportunity to demonstrate his speed. Contact on the opening lap set him back to third. He later tangled with Jordan Henn in turn three on the fifth lap and suffered a flat right-rear tire....
