Danny Johnson Set To Compete At Penn Can Speedway; 'The Doctor' Will Be In For Tuesday, June 8 'Clash at the Can' Event

SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Danny Johnson is set to invade Penn Can Speedway.

'The Doctor' will bring his unique brand of Modified racing excitement to the Susquehanna, Pa., oval on Tuesday night, June 8 to participate in the highly-anticipated 'Clash at the Can' presented by Gary's U-Pull-It, Don's Automotive Mall, Plant Food Company Inc., Reading Plastic Fabricators and G&G Used Auto Parts.

The 'Clash at the Can,' a 60-lap big-block/small-block Modified event sanctioned by the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour, is co-promoted by Brett Deyo and Penn Can's management team of Reed Miller and Al Wilcox. The 'Clash at the Can' is one half of the Modified 'Super Summer Series' at Penn Can. The second event, dubbed the 'Hot Summer Night' will take place on Tuesday night, Aug. 10.

Both RoC-sanctioned big-block/small-block Modified events in the series are 60 laps paying $4,000 to the victor. Should the race winner post the optional $20 "gambler's fee," the win will be worth $5,000.

Gates for the 'Clash at the Can' event will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m. A rain date of June 9 has been established for the event.

Johnson, a full-time dirt Modified racer from Rochester, N.Y., will enter the event driving for Mike Payne of Stanley, N.Y. Many will recall Johnson, then driving for Payne, came oh-so-close to winning the 'King of the Can' 100-lapper at Penn Can during the 2006 season only to have a bolt come loose in the car's front end mere laps from the checkered.

Johnson is considered one of the most exciting talents in Modified racing. He competes regularly at Ransomville (N.Y.), Canandaigua (N.Y.) and Cayuga County (N.Y.) on a weekly basis in addition to touring series events.

An all-star field that will include Johnson, Billy Pauch Sr., Brett Hearn, Jeff Strunk, Rick Laubach, Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, Jerry Higbie Jr., Rich Ricci Jr., Kevin Hirthler, Mitch Gibbs, Mike Gular and many more is assembling for the 'Clash at the Can' race.

New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway general manager Danny Serrano has come to an agreement with the 'Super Summer Series' management team to reward the June 8 'Clash at the Can' winner with a guaranteed starting position in the July 31 Friends of Mike event at NES, a $500 value. The winner of the Aug.10 'Hot Summer Night' earns a guaranteed starting position in the Tuesday night, Aug. 24 'Summer Sizzler 40' at New Egypt along with the Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway Oct. 9.

The top point earner from the 'Super Summer Series' will receive $1,000 cash courtesy of sponsors G&G Used Auto Parts, Reading Plastic Fabricators and Plant Food Company Inc., while drivers making both events will be eligible for the following contingency awards:

*Diversified Machine Inc. (Lancaster, Pa.) has provided $250 in product certificates redeemable at any DMI/Bulldog dealer. Drivers will be eligible for the certificates by attending both 'Super Summer Series' events at Penn Can.

*Trackside Products of Endicott, N.Y., proprietor Al Wilcox has reached an agreement to give away two American Racer tires and 20 gallons of VP Racing Fuel. Drivers must run both 'Super Summer Series' events to be eligible for contingency awards.

*S&D Bodyline (Bath, Pa.) has offered 50 percent off an outer body kit (no sale or discounts available) to include right and left doors, quarters, A-pillars and B-pillars. Drivers will be eligible for the certificates by attending both 'Super Summer Series' events at Penn Can.

*The leader of lap 41 in both the 'Clash at the Can' and 'Hot Summer Night' will receive $50 in memory of Jane Kennerup from Martin and J.R. Kennerup.

*A Hard Charger bonus of $150 cash will be paid out to the driver advancing the most positions from start to finish in both the June 8 'Clash at the Can' and the Aug. 10 'Hot Summer Night' events from the Grandview (Pa.) Speedway Starter's Stand. The drivers earning Hard Charger distinction will also receive a 16- by 20-inch framed photo composite, a $75 value, courtesy of Jim Young Race Photos.

*Feature winners of each 'Super Summer Series' event will receive two FREE passes for 2011 Modified racing to be held at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway. Selinsgrove's annual 'Icebreaker' weekend has become a must-see race of the spring under the guidance of Selinsgrove promoter Charlie Paige and race director Joe Kaminski.

*Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway owner/promoter Andrew Harpell has donated two FREE pit passes to his season-ending Southern Tier 100 Modified event to be run Oct. 30.

*Accord (N.Y.) Speedway owner/promoters Gary and Donna Palmer have donated two FREE pit passes to their season-ending King of the Catskills Modified event to be run Sept. 24.

To benefit race teams, pit licenses from any track or sanctioning body will be recognized at the pit gate for a $5 discount off pit area admission. To be eligible for the discount, the license must be presented at the pit pass window.

Complete event rules and specifics for the 'Super Summer Series' have been posted on the web at http://www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com/.

Notable rules for the event are as follows:

*Tire Information:

Front tire options - American Racer SD 33 or harder

Left-rear options - American Racer SD 33, 38 or 44

Right-rear options - American Racer SD 38, 44, 48 or 50

*General Race Rules:

The standard for engine, body, chassis and safety specs are based upon '04 DIRT rules. Sail panels are permitted for this event. Sail panels will be measured from the ground to the highest point and should be no higher than 65 inches. Sail panels must mirror size and shape side-for-side.

*Weight Information:

Small-Block under 361 c.i., on gas or methanol, with maximum 750 cfm carburetor: 2,400 lbs.

Big-Block or Small-Block over 361 c.i., gasoline only: 2,500 lbs.

Small-Blocks running SB2 heads must weigh Big-Block weight!

Entry forms have been posted on the web. Drivers entering prior to June 5 will receive a $5 discount. Joey Grammes of Lehighton, Pa., was the first official entrant. Grammes is a past RoC winner at Penn Can, having driven to Victory Lane in the 'King of the Can' race held Sept. 15, 2006.

Penn Can's three-eighths-mile layout means money, fresh rubber and horsepower don't guarantee success, making the 'Super Summer Series' events favorable to low-dollar, weekly teams.

No conflicts on the dirt Modified calendar will allow the touring series stars and Pennsylvania/New Jersey teams to invade the facility. The makings of an all-star field are in place.

Running under the RoC banner brings along the touring group's followers, as well. A field of 56 358-Modifieds and 64 big-block Mods took part in the recent RoC opening weekend at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway.

With a posted $28,000 point fund for the '10 RoC series and Lias Tire of Indiana, Pa., offering incentives for drivers running American Racer facilities via its rich $100,000 American Racer Cup, strong support is expected for the entire RoC circuit this summer.

Rain dates have been put into place for both events. Should the June 8 'Clash at the Can' fall to rain, it will be run on June 9. The Aug. 10 'Hot Summer Night' moves to Aug. 11 in the event of wet weather.

The '10 'Super Summer Series' is presented by Plant Food Company Inc., Don's Automotive Mall, Gary's U-Pull-It, Reading Plastic Fabricators, G&G Used Auto Parts, Puzo's Collision, Jim Young Race Photos and Trackside Products.

Sponsorship opportunities, including product and contingency awards, remain available for the 'Super Summer Series' at Penn Can.
