Bridgeport, NJ – Normally on Friday night, you can hear the sound of roaring engines while the fans and family members cheer on their favorites from the grandstands at the Bridgeport Speedway. However, this Friday you will only hear silence. That’s because the Bridgeport quarter-mile clay oval will be buzzing on Sunday rather than Friday. The final Poker Hands of the 2014 Series will be handed out come this Sunday evening.
After much success on the 5/8 mile with their Big Block & Crate/Sportsman Poker Series event the past two seasons, Bridgeport decided earlier in the year to carry over the popular series to the 1/4 mile facility. The 600 and 270 micro sprints were given three Sunday dates throughout the season to form the ‘best poker hand’ possible. A community card was drawn after each of the first two events back in April and August, thus giving the competitors two extra cards to complete the ‘Poker Hand’.
The 600’s have run wingless in the poker series that is sponsored by S&D Racing. Tim Buckwalter and Alex Bright, who both have plenty of wingless experience running with the ARDC midgets, were victorious in the previous two events. The first event drew 24 600’s, while just one month ago, the second hand race drew a whopping 41 wingless entries.
$1,000 is on the line for first place this coming Sunday, while second place pays $500 and $300 for third. New York’s own Robert Hocker has the best poker hand heading into this weekend’s final race with a pair of seven’s, a six and two. Sam Lamothe and Jermain Godshall complete the top 3 best hands. All top 10 drivers can still win the 2014 S&D Racing 600 wingless Poker Series, which will pay a minimum of $500 to the series champion. These drivers include such hot shoes as current and former Kutztown champions, brothers Jay and Jeff Hartman, 2014 Grandview 358 winner Tim Buckwalter, Airport point leader Brett Michalski, indoor racing standout Rob Vivona, current Bridgeport co-point leader Andrew Locuson, and two-time defending Bridgeport 600 champion Bill Thomas.
Meanwhile, the 270 micro class has run their series with a traditional wing on top. Luke Fogg and Jay Hartman have taken the checkered in the first two events which have paid $300 to win. Hartman has a stronghold for having the ‘best hand’ (Pair of Kings, Ace, Eight). However, DE’s Roland Saxton still has a chance at the title, while leading division winner Joe Dopke rounds out the top 3. There are five more drivers vying for the A/C sponsored 270 micro sprint Poker Series point fund, which will pay a minimum of $300 to the winner, with the best three hands earning money for their efforts.
Not to be outdone by the micros, the Tobias Slingshots have been given a Poker Series as well this season. The Jeffery Houge Realtor Action Track USA/OMS Racing 2014 Slingshot Poker Series is paying a cool $500 for this year’s champion. Due to scheduling conflicts, the slingshots were given and extra race, which will take place on Saturday, October 18 to decide their Poker Champion. However, this race is even more important since the ‘community card’ will be given to all the competitors in attendance. Currently, PA’s BJ Antonio has the best hand with a pair of Queen’s and a Duece. All 14 drivers are mathematically alive to steal the championship away from Antonio. The top three best hands will receive point fund money courtesy of the 2014 sponsors.
Currently leading the three 2014 Poker Series events are drivers from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with a Delaware driver looking to steal some headlines this weekend. Everyone's cards will be on the table literally this weekend. Bridgeport’s own 4-cylinder division will also be joining the racing card on Sunday. All gates open at 3pm with racing beginning at 6pm. General admission is $15, while pit admission is $30.
Thanks so much & have a great day!
