PAUCH JR., BEACH JR., AND BECKER ALL GRAB 2ND WINS OF SEASON, SNYDER AND LAWRENCE ALSO VICTORIOUS AT BIG DIAMOND SPEEDWAY
MINERSVILLE, PA - June 1st, 2014
Billy Pauch Jr. ended the month of May at Big Diamond Speedway the same way he started it - in victory lane. Pauch Jr. held off Rick Laubach during a spirited battle over the last 10 laps to record his 2nd win of the season at Big Diamond and 3rd overall for 2014 in the 358 Modified ranks.
Kyle Follweiler led the first three laps on the 25 lap main event from his poll starting spot before the caution came out for the stopped car of Ron Haring Jr. At the same time Jeff Strunk, who had been pressuring Follweiler for the lead, came to a stop in turn number two. Strunk had to be towed from the track, ending his night for the evening. Pauch Jr., who started seventh, now lined up outside Follweiler on the restart and quickly jumped out to the lead when the green was once again displayed. Pauch led comfortably over the next 12 laps, but all the while Rick Laubach was slowly but surely moving into contention, and by lap 15 he was now within a car length of the leader. Over the last ten laps it was Pauch Jr. in the low grove, with Laubach running the high line, battling wheel to wheel for the win. Coming down for the checkered flag Laubach gave it one last effort, driving way to the outside in turn four to try and grab the win, but he came up just .182 seconds short at the line. Puach Jr. was the winner over Laubach, followed by Stewart Friesen with his best Big Diamond finish of the season, Craig Von Dohren from 19th position, and Brett Kressley with his first ever top five in the Modifieds at Big Diamond. Rounding out the top ten were Kevin Albert Jr, Kyle Follweiler, Jared Umbenhauer, Frank Cozze, and Kevin Smith. With the one two finish, Laubach and Pauch Jr. were both able to jump past Meme Desantis in the point standings, with Laubach now the leader in the overall season long point chase.
In the Jeremy Slifko Fabrication Services Late Model 20 lap event, Drew Weiser led the first 5 laps before Danny Snyder was able to wrestle away the lead with a pass coming off turn two. From there Snyder checked out on the field, winning by almost 6 seconds over second place Ben Whitaker. Scott Haus was able to grab third on the final lap, as then third place running Weiser came to a stop in turn two. Steve Nederostak came home fourth, followed by Randall Paxton, Billy Wampler, Sean Merkel, Weiser, Jim O' Hara, and Steve Weikel, who was making his first start of the season. With the third place finish, Haus was able to take over the season point lead from Wampler.
Kevin Beach Jr. started on the front row and was able to wire the field in the 20 lap USS Achey Sportsman main event. Doug Hendricks and Wayne Witmer stayed close enough to keep Beach honest, but neither was able to get close enough to mount a real serious challenge. Hendricks came home second, followed by Witmer, Shawn Light, who really came on over the last five laps, and Billy Moyer Jr. Clay Butler, Ray Woodall Jr., Tim Fitzpatrick Jr., Chad Putalavage, and Charles Fayash rounded out the top ten.
In the always exciting Savage 61 Roadrunner event, two time feature winner Tim Fitzpatrick Jr. led the first two laps before Chris Holland was able to wrestle away the lead. Holland led the next ten laps, but not without tons of pressure from Fitzpatrick Jr. and Jeremy Becker. On lap #13, Fitzpatrick Jr. was able to regain the lead from Holland, with Becker following into second. Fitzpatrick Jr. led the next four laps before Becker was able to take over the top spot on lap #17, with Holland in tow. Becker was able to hold of the challenges of Holland over the last four laps, taking his second win of the season. Holland was able to hold on to second, followed by Fitzpatrick Jr., Shon Elk, and Terry Kramer Jr. TJ Fitzpatrick came home sixth, with Joey Brennan, Andrew Fayash III, Jared Seigfried, and Jim Kost rounded out the top ten.
Matt Lawrence was the winner of the 20 lap Outlaw Enduro Series event.
