BRIDGEPORT CROWNS 2014 CHAMPIONS
Horton, Hill and Henry Pick Up Wins on Final Night of Points
The final night of points raises the level of excitement on race night and this year was certainly no exception as positions came right down to the wire on Friday night at the Bridgeport Speedway.
Jimmy Horton won his seventh race of the season on his way to his ninth Bridgeport Speedway Big Block Modified Track Championship with a pass by race leader, Ryan Watt as the pair raced to the white flag. After a hard crash in his qualifying race, Travis Hill went to the Bill Hill Memorial Car #99H as a back-up in the feature, finishing third as older brother, Jesse won the 811 Dig Safely Crate/Sportsman feature event for car owner, Brett Cogdill. Jimmy Avery battled all the way to the checkered to trail race winner, TJ Henry at the finish line on his way to his first ever Bridgeport Speedway Outlaw Stock Championship.
It took the Spirit Dodge Big Block Modifieds several tries to score the first lap but when they did it was Woolrich, NJ driver, Bob Sarkisian out in front. Sarkisian led through the first nine laps as he was trailed by Watt, Horton, Tom Maccherone and Rocco Infante. Watt took the lead following a lap ten restart as Sarkisian had his hands full with the challenges of Horton and Duane Howard. Watt led Sarkisian, Horton, Howard and Wade Hendrickson at the half way point.
With just six laps left to race, Sarkisian slowed on the track, bringing out the caution. Horton now started along side of Watt and initially took the lead on the restart but a two car incident in turn two called back the start. On the next start, Watt regained the lead as Howard closed in on Horton. Hendrickson ran fourth with Craig VonDohren racing the Dick Biever #14S into the top five.
Another caution was needed with five laps to go when Steve Young came to a stop on the track. Watt maintained his advantage on the single file restart.
With two to go, Watt held a several car advantage over Horton. Horton changed lines and closed in on Watt after taking the two to go sign. Horton put the Lincoln Auto Body #5 to the outside of Watt in turn three. Horton was the race leader as he and Watt drove to the white flag. One lap later, Horton raced to his seventh win of the season as he captured the 2014 Big Block Modified Championship. Watt's second place finish moved him up to second in the final point standings. Howard fiished third with Dominic Buffalino and Rick Laubach completing the top five at the checkered.
For the third time this season, Jesse Hill took the win in the 811 Dig Safely Crate/Sportsman Feature event. Steve Desmelyk led the first seven laps before Sean Gunther powered his own #307 into the lead on lap eight. Jesse Hill caught Gunther on lap fourteen. The two raced side by side before Hill edged into the lead on lap fifteen. Mechanical woes sidelined Gunther just two laps from the finish. CJ Jones had another strong outing to finish second while Crate/Sportsman Champion, Travis Hill finished third. Justin Lilick was the fourth place finisher with Clay Butler rounding out the top five at the line.
TJ Henry emerged with the win in the Stewart Stainless Outlaw Stock Feature event when the race leaders made contact on the final lap of the fifteen lap feature event. Henry took the win while Avery's second place finish earned him his first Bridgeport track title. Pat Conaway, who led more than half of the race, recovered to finish third. Jack Beaumont and Tom Wills, Jr. completed the top five.
