 IT'S ACES FOR HORTON, SEAROCK AND FREES IN 3RD BRIDGEPORT POKER HAND

 

     Jimmy Horton, Steve Searock and Ron Frees earned Aces for their feature wins during the running of the third hand in the Bridgeport Speedway 2014 Poker Series on Sunday night. 

 

     Horton's fourth Bridgeport win of the season came in the forty lap Spirit Dodge Big Block Modified feature event after Horton qualified through the consolation,  placing the Neshanic Station, NJ driver twenty-first in the original starting line-up. 

 

      Horton dedicated the win to his father.  "Happy Birthday, Dad," Horton announced.  "This one's for him!"  After winning his fourth race since the beginning of June, Horton was met with a rousing cheer as he drove into Victory Lane. 

 

     Duane Howard drew the pole and quickly jumped out to the early race lead.  Howard led the first fifteen laps before Craig VonDohren drove from his nineteenth place start in the Dick Beaver owner Modified to take the lead from Howard on lap sixteen.  VonDohren ran a higher line around the 5/8th mile track than Howard, reeling the leader in after racing his way into second with just ten laps completed.  VonDohren drove around the outside of Howard to take the lead and immediately distanced himself from the field.  

 

     Horton never arrived in the top five until after a lap twenty-four restart.  While circling the track under caution, third place contender, Sammy Martz headed to the pits to change a flat tire.  Martz returned to restart at the rear of the field, moving Horton up to fifth when racing resumed.  Horton quickly moved up to fourth when the green flag waved, passing Sammy Piazza for the position.  On lap twenty-six, Horton took third away from Ryan Godown as the two drivers raced off of turn two.  Three laps later, Horton took second with a pass by Howard.  

 

     VonDohren continued to lead and had pulled away from the field by the time Horton arrived in second.  VonDohren had no trouble in maintaining the top spot on a lap thirty restart.  But as the final laps began to count down, Horton closed in on VonDohren.  With just four laps remaining, Horton closed the distance with VonDohren racing the top and Horton the bottom of the track.  Horton took the lead on lap thirty-seven and immediately put some distance between himself and VonDohren.

 

     With the checkered flag waving, Jimmy Horton drove to the 125th Bridgeport feature win of his career ahead of Craig VonDohren, Rick Laubach, Howard and Godown.  

 

     Both Horton and VonDohren qualified through the consolation, starting twenty-first and nineteenth in the original line-up.  Laubach was slated to start fourteenth but was forced to pit on a parade lap for a broken power steering belt.  He returned to restart at the rear of the field.   

 

      CJ Jones drew the pole for the twenty-five lap 811 Dig Safely Crate Sp ortsman feature event and promptly set the pace for the twenty-five lap event.  Jone led from the green through lap twenty-two when Steve Searock moved in to challenge.  Jones and Searock crossed the starting line side by side on lap twenty-three but it was all Searock for the final two circuits.  Jesse James Bonaduce, driving the Horton #43, moved into second and trailed Searock to the finish line.  Jones finished third followed by Mike Lyons and Mike Butler.

 

     Ron Frees is going to be hard to beat after he collected his third win and third ace in the Pete Ellis 'Lucky Teter'/John Blewett Inc Outlaw Stock Poker Series feature event.   Jimmy Avery led the first three laps before Frees went into the lead.  TJ Henry pressed Frees for the final fifteen laps but Frees went on to pick up his fifth win of the season.  Henry finished second followed by Jeramy Doerr, Gary Klimezak and Billy Wroble. 

 

     The racing program was opened by the Delaware Super Trucks who raced on the 1/4 mile Speedway prior to the start of the Poker Series program.   Matt Lo ng emerged as the winner of a feature event that went non-stop from green to checkered but provided a lot of racing action.  Joe Pete and Stanley Pete followed Long at the checkered.
