14TH ANNUAL KING OF THE CAN SET FOR PENN CAN SPEEDWAY THIS WEEKEND (10-15-13)

Vying For The Throne: Penn Can Speedway’s 14th Annual ‘King of the Can’ Set For This Weekend; Friday Program Headlined By Modified 50-lap Event Paying $5,014 To Win & $314 To Start; Talented Field Takes Shape; SuperNationals Winner Craig Hanson To Take Part In Pre-Race Festivities – Fans Can Learn “Who Is Craig Hanson?”

SUSQUEHANNA, PA – The annual marquee season-ending event for Penn Can Speedway is set for this weekend with the 14th edition of the ‘King of the Can’ spectacular.

On Friday, Oct. 18 – in a co-promotion involving Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC and track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox for the third consecutive year – big-block/small-block Modifieds are featured in a 50-lap main event paying $5,014 to the winner and $314 to take the green flag plus bonuses. Also on the Friday program (with a Sunday, Oct. 20 rain date) are Crate 602 Sportsman in a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win event and Street Stocks running 25 laps for $650 to win at the Susquehanna County one-third-mile oval.

Gates open on Friday at 5:15 p.m. Hot laps are set for 6:45 p.m. and racing gets underway at 7:15 p.m. Adult admission is $22. Seniors (ages 62 and up) pay $20. Students (ages 12-17) enter for $10 and Kids 11 and under are free. Pit admission is $35.

DJ ‘All-Day Entertainment’ will be on site providing musical entertainment in the grandstand area beginning at 5:30 p.m. Event apparel, including new, custom ‘King of the Can’ tee-shirts, long-sleeve shirts and sweatshirts, will be on sale, along with ‘King of the Can’ decals and program books.

Ryan Godown of Ringoes, N.J., is the defending ‘King of the Can’ Modified event winner.

Modified racers from across the Northeast will congregate at Penn Can, vying for a seat on the “throne” toilet in Victory Lane!

Among those planning to compete are 2011 race winner and Fonda (N.Y.)/Utica-Rome (N.Y.) champion Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., driving Tadd Parks’ No. 1; three-time Mr. DIRTcar Modified champion Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y. in Jeff Brownell’s No. 9s; DIRT Hall of Fame inductee Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, Pa., driving for Norm Hansell; Fulton (N.Y.) Speedway champion Pat Ward of Genoa, N.Y.;  I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway champion Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, N.Y., along with his father Jim ‘the Workshoe’ Mahaney, a former Outlaw Circuit Modified star; Orange County (N.Y.) and Accord (N.Y.) standout Tommy Meier of Waldwick, N.J., in his Penn Can debut; multi-time Penn Can champion Brian Weaver of Windsor, N.Y.; Accord winner Danny Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y.; Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Craig Hanson of Tribes Hill, N.Y., the upset winner over a 79-car field at Five Mile Point Oct. 12 during the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals, will take advantage of a guaranteed redraw position he earned via his ‘Working Man’s Race’ victory to make his debut at Penn Can Friday.

Hanson, a four-time Glen Ridge (N.Y.) Motorsports Park winner this season and a Saturday regular at Fonda Speedway, plans to display his No. 20c in the grandstand area prior to the ‘King of the Can’ on Friday. Hanson will be available to meet fans starting at 5:30 p.m. through 6 p.m. with photos to hand out. Fans wondering “Who is Craig Hanson?” during last Saturday’s event at Five Mile Point can get to know the driver first-hand at Penn Can.

The Penn Can Friday contingent will be led by current and two-time track champion Kevin Hartnett of Barto, Pa.; Alan Rudalavage of Newton Lake, Pa.; Mike Schane of Lake Ariel, Pa.; Bobby Trapper of Scranton, Pa.; Joey Colsten of Binghamton, N.Y.; ’06 ‘King of the Can’ Joey Grammes of Lehighton, Pa.; Adam MacGeorge of Great Bend, Pa.; Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel, Pa.; and more.

A number of contingency awards have sweetened the pot for this weekend’s activities.

Modified teams having attended three of the following four events and present at the ‘King of the Can’ will be eligible for two prize packages: ‘Clash at the Can’ at Penn Can Speedway Wednesday, June 13; I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway ‘Crazy 8s Special’ Wednesday, July 24; ‘Battle of the Bullring’ at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway Tuesday, August 6; and Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway Oct. 12. 

Drivers satisfying the attendance requirements will included in a pair of drawings. The drawings will take place at the drivers’ meeting in public view.

The first prize package, courtesy of Shiley Fabrication in Williamstown, Pa., includes a front bumper, rear bumper, left-and right-side rubrails, left- and right-side inner jigs, left- and right-side door mounts, left- and right-side quarter mounts, front and rear roof mounts, left- and right-side roof mounts, left- and right-ride nose mounts, left- and right-side rear quarter mounts and a rear deck mount (for a Teo-Pro car). The second ‘Outer Body Kit’ package comes from S&D Bodyline in Bath, Pa. It includes right- and left-side doors and quarter panels, A-pillars and B-pillars. S&D Bodyline is operated by Don Biegley and can be found on the web at www.sdbodyline.com.

Other ‘King of the Can’ event specific awards include $50 to all Modified heat winners from American Racer/Lias Tire, a $100 Hard Charger Award from Manmiller Electric, an American Racer tire certificate for a driver placing 11th-15th (random draw) from Lias Tire of Indiana, Pa.; a $500 credit toward the purchase of a new body from BFP Specialty in Bethel, Pa.; $100 certificates to the top-three finishers from Bob Hilbert Sportswear; a$100 credit to S&D Bodyline toward the purchase of a body; and a package of bumpers and rubrails for the ‘Hard Luck Award’ recipient from Shiley Fabrication voted upon by media members and officials.

The race winner, of course, takes home a trophy courtesy of S&W Awards in Lindley, N.Y., and a custom, lettered toilet as ‘King of the Can’ winner.

Saturday’s (Oct. 19) program, promoted by Penn Can’s management team, is comprised of Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman (35 laps, $1,250 to win), Race of Champions Street Stocks (25 laps, $650 to win), RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars (25 laps), Factory Stocks (20 laps, $200 to win with 16 cars), XCel 600 Modifieds and Four Cylinders (20 laps, $200 to win with 16 cars).

Pit gates open Saturday at 3 p.m., with grandstand gates swinging open at 4 p.m.  Hot laps begin at 5 p.m., with a make-up Factory Stock feature at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m.

Saturday grandstand prices are $14 for Adults, $12 for Seniors (ages 62 and over) and $10 for Students (ages 12-17). Kids 11 and younger are free. Pit admittance is $30.

Camping is permitted during the ‘King of the Can’ weekend free of charge (no hook-ups).
