$8,000 TO WIN. . . . .
TJ STUTTS WINS 13TH ANNUAL MACH 1 358-360 SPRINT NATIONAL OPEN SATURDAY NIGHT AT SELINSGROVE SPEEDWAY
SELINSGROVE, PA . . . . . TJ Stutts of Liverpool, PA was the class of the fifty car field that turned out for the 13th running of the MACH 1 358-360 Sprint National Open on Saturday night at the Selinsgrove Speedway. Stutts ran an impressive race, leading the 35 lap feature event wire-to-wire and collecting $8,000 for the victory. Although Stutts was all alone at the drop of the checker flag, he was being chased by Blane Heimbach, Pat Cannon, Brock Zearfoss and Aaron Ott in the closing laps.
The format for the URC/ESS co-sanctioned event was very interesting. First, drivers drew for the order of timed warm-ups. The timed warm-ups were used to determine the starting line-up for the first of five heat race events. A second round of heats were run, determining the starting-line by inverting the finish of the first round of heat races. Passing points were awarded for the heat race events with the top five in points entering into a “revenge redraw” for the top five starting positions in the feature.
The first round of five heat race events were won by Robbie Stillwaggon, Pat Cannon, TJ Stutts, Josh Weller and Blane Heimbach. Round two of the heat race events were won by Lance Dewease, Dan Mazy, Jason Shultz, Mark Bitner and Dave Ely. Two “B” Main events were necessary with victories going to Brent Marks and Mike Walter.
In the 35 lap MACH 1 event, Robbie Stillwaggon and TJ Stutts made up the front row and at the drop of the green flag, there was no stopping Stutts as he bolted into the lead entering turn one. Brock Zearfoss was on a charge going into third on lap two and one lap later, he passed Stillwaggon for third. Blane Heimbach was coming to the front as well, racing in third on lap four.
Not too deep in the pack, Pat Cannon was coming as well, advancing to fourth on lap five. At the front of the pack, Stutts was moving away from the rest of the field. As the field passed for the first ten laps, the top five were Stutts, Heimbach, Zearfoss, Aaron Ott and Mark Smith.
Stutts remained the pace setter through the halfway point of the race followed by Heimbach, Cannon, Zearfoss and Aaron Ott.
By lap twenty-six Cannon caught Heimbach and one lap later, Cannon was racing in second. Cannon now set his sights on Stutts with opens of catching the leader. Stutts maintained his lead through the balance of the race and took the victory and the $8,000 winner’s check. The race was also part of the Rislone URC Sprint Series will valuable points up for grabs with just three point races remaining on the URC schedule.
