Christine Jr. Takes Victory in Late Model “Three Car Thriller” at SSP on Saturday Night
Next Test & Tune at SSP on Wednesday, August 21
Newberrytown, PA (August 17, 2013) – Manchester’s Randy Christine Jr. bested Chase Billet and Justin Ehrhart to record his third Late Model victory of the season at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday night, August 17. Littlestown’s Randy Zechman took his sixth win of the season in the Street Stocks. Donnie Broderick of Lancaster claimed his third Xtreme Stock victory of the 2013 season. Milton’s Derrick Bowersox took his first career PA Sprint Series victory in the 20 lapper. Daryl Sipe of York Haven was declared the Road Warrior feature following a protest. Donny Groff of Mountville took his fifth Mini Van victory of the year. The Camera & Autograph Night before the Late Model feature included 109 racecars from the six classes of racing. During the successful Central PA Blood Drive, forty-three people participated in the event.
In Late Model action, the race will be remembered as the “Three Car Thriller” in one of the most exciting races in the past 10 years, if not the history of the speedway. It took three attempts to start the feature, but once it started, it was spectacular. Chase Billet led the first 10 circuits as Randy Christine Jr. and Justine Ehrhart swapped second and third place many times. They remained within two to three car lengths behind Billet. On lap eleven, it went from a two car battle for the runner-up spot to a three car battle for the lead. Ehrhart took the lead on lap 11 and set the pace with Billet never backing off. The three cars came up to a lapped car on lap 20. As the pack split the lapped car, Randy Christine Jr. chose the right lien and came away with the lead. At the end, with the crowd on its feet, Christine Jr. took the win over Billet in second and Ehrhart coming across the line in third. Ron Coleman finished a respectable foruth with Chris Knopp taking fifth. Ben Whitaker was the JR’s Paving Hard Charger by finishing sixth after starting in 15th. Heat race wins went to Kyle Martin, Ehrhart and Christine Jr.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature had Bob Scott Jr. lead lap one with Chris Derr taking the top spot on lap 2. Randy Zechman then took the top spot on lap 4 and went on to record his sixth win of the season over Doug Bennett. Eddie Richards recorded his season best third place followed by Scott Thunberg and Scott in fourth and fifth respectively. Heat race winners included Dan Zechman and Mike Kiehl.
In the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car nightcap, Donnie Broderick quickly jumped out to the lead from the pole position after initial pole sitter Chad Stine spun on the first start of the race. At the same time, Johnny Palm, who started in seventh moved behind Broderick to challenge for the top spot. In the later stages of the race, Palm pressured Broderick, even moving ahead at times, but not able to take full control of the lead at the start/finish line. At the finish, the pair were within three feet of each other as Broderick edged out Palm for the win. Palm was awarded the Madison House East Hard Charger as well. Travis Horan ran strong in third, as Cameron Benyou and Todd Knaub rounded out the top five. Palm and Travis Horan won their respective heat races.
The polesitter Derrick Bowersox quickly took the top spot with two and three wide racing prevalent behind him. First, Ryan Lynn applied pressure to the leader and then it was Logan Wagner. Midway through the race, Mark Watkins took the runner-up spot from Wagner and then challenged Bowersox. Bowersox never made a mistake and went on to record his career first victory. Watkins settled for second with Wagner in third. Scott Ellerman claimed fourth with Lynn in fifth. Heat race wins went to Kody Lehman, Alex Schanz and Colby Dice. Jason Bergstresser took the win in the consolation race.
The 15-lap Road Warrior feature found Ricky Weaver Jr. taking the lead on lap four but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection following a successful protest. Runner- Dary Sipe was awarded the victory with Wes Kellison in second. Curt McDade finished third, folwoed by Cory Phillips and Travis Brown. Kellison, McDade and Weaver were heat race winners.
The Mini Van feature found Donny Groff leading Zakari Kitner from start-to-finish to take the win. John Kitner finished Third with Chrissy Rogers in fourth. Groff won the sole heat race.
