VON DOHREN WINS 5th OF THE SEASON AT BIG DIAMOND, BEACH AND ELK ALSO VICTORIOUS
MINERSVILLE, PA - AUGUST 18th, 2013
Only one word can describe the performance of Craig Von Dohren on Friday night - Domination!
Von Dohren took the lead from Duane Howard on lap #4 and drove away from the field to record his 5th victory of the season at Big Diamond Speedway. The win was the 79th of his career at Big Diamond, and allowed Von Dohren to extend his point lead with only six point races remaining.
Dan Hineline led the first lap from his pole starting position before the first and only caution flag of the event flew for a spin in turn #4. All involved cars were able to continue. On the restart, Duane Howard powered into the lead from his third starting position. Howard was able to lead until lap #4, when Von Dohren powered by on the outside of turn #3 to take command of the event. From there, Von Dohren worked lapped traffic to perfection and was never really challenged the remainder of the event. Howard was able to fend off numerous challenges from Jeff Strunk to take the runner-up spot, with Strunk taking third. Doug Manmiller came from 10th to 4th, and Tim Buckwalter rounded out the top five with his second top 5 finish of the season. Sixth thru tenth were Meme Desantis, Rick Laubach, Ricky Yetter, last race winner Ray Swinehart, and Frank Cozze. Heat races were won by Howard, Buckwalter, and Brad Arnold.
In the one-on-one Coke Challenge races for modifieds, Doug Manmiller was the last man picked, and ended up being the last man standing. He was able to power to the inside of Frank Cozze in turns one and two and collect the $500.00 payday for the overall winner of the event.
In the Sportsman event, teammates AJ Gerhart and Mike Glass took turns leading different parts of the feature over the first 13 laps. On a lap #13 restart, tenth place starter Kevin Beach powered by both drivers in turns one and two to take the lead and drive off to his second victory in a row and fourth of the season. Glass continued his strong second half of the season with a runner up finish, followed by point leader Jared Umbenhauer, Doug Hendricks, and Tim Fitzpatrick. Sixth thru tenth were Joe Mooney, Andrew Cozze, AJ Gerhart, Robin Schultz, and Wayne Witmer. Heat races were won by Cozze and Beach.
Shon Elk led all 15 laps of the time shortened Roadrunner feature from his pole starting spot. The win didn't come easy, as Jeremy Becker was all over the back bumper of Elk over the 2nd half of the event. Third went to Marc Berzowski, followed by Chris Holland and "Front Row" Joe Kavanaugh. Sixth thru tenth were Tom Hablett, making his first start of the season, Jesse Krasnitsky, for his first top 10 of the 2013 season, "Buckshot" Glenn Rowan, TJ Fitzpatrick, and Tim Fitzpatrick Jr. Heat races were won by Kavanaugh and Elk.
Racing returns to Big Diamond Speedway this coming Friday, August 23rd with the "Prelude to the Coalcracker" event for the 358 Modifieds, paying an unheard of $4,000 to win the 30 lap event and $400 to take the green in what is quickly becoming a "must see" event. With drivers from other tracks looking to get a little seat time in just a week before the annual Coalcraker 72 race, a large, diverse field is expected for this event.
So far in 2013, Craig Von Dohren is a perfect 4 for 4 in these 30 lap events. Can he go 5 for 5, or will another driver be able to derail his domination in these big money events? Make sure you don't miss what is sure to be an exciting event.
Also on the card that evening will be the Hilborn Tri-State Race Saver Sprints making their 2nd appearance of the season in a 20 lap feature event, along with the Savage 61 Roadrunners, also with a 20 lap feature event.
The Street Stocks race originally scheduled for this date has been removed from the evenings event.
Adult grandstand admission for this event will be $20.00, with kids 12 and under admitted free of charge.
Gates will open at 5:00 PM, with warm-ups at 7:45 PM and the first heat scheduled to hit the track at 8:15 PM.
Just a reminder that coming up on Sunday, September 1st, Big Diamond Speedway and Jack Rich Inc. present the annual Coalcracker 72 race for the ZY Pyrotechnics 358 Modifieds. Also on the card will be the Roadrunners competing in a 25 lap main event, along with a huge fireworks display to be set-off at some point during the evening.
Entry forms are now available for this event, with the early entry fee being $35.00 per car. The day of the event the entry fee increases to $50.00 per car. Entry forms have already been received from track regulars Ricky Yetter, Ron Haring Jr., Dan Hineline, and Ray Swinehart.
Lap sponsorships are also available at $20.00 per lap. Please see Tim Long at the pit sign in booth or in the tower at intermission if interesting in sponsoring a lap or laps.
