SHORT STORY (radio, TV and other media with limited space)
JON KELLNER SR. WINS NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED FEATURE, FUNK TOPS IN SPORTSMAN AND MERKEL WINS LATE MODELS SATURDAY AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA  August 18, 2013……. It was a three way battle for the victory in the 30 lap NASCAR Whelen 358 Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night with veteran racer Jon Kellner Sr. topping Duane Howard and Craig VonDohren to gain the $2750 win with the Vince’s Towing & Recovery No.41. Joe Funk came home first in the 25-lap feature for the Sportsman wheeling the Morrisville Tavern No. 14J to the win. In the third feature of the night Sean Merkel brought the Merkel Rebar/Kochel Equipment No. 118 home first for his third win of the season.
For much of the 30-lap feature for Modifieds it looked like a member of the Kellner family was going to win but it was not certain which one. Young Brian Houseknecht led he first 14 laps with Jon Kellner Jr. grabbing the top spot on the 15thcircuit, the halfway mark, and worked at holding off his dad Jon Sr. At the 20th lap Jon Sr. went to the front and led the rest of the way to grab his first win of the season. The Lansdale racer was challenged right to the checkered flag by second place finisher Duane Howard, coming from 15th starting spot and Craig VonDohren having started 16th. Fourth place was earned by Jeff Strunk followed by early leader Jon Kellner Sr.
The first two laps of the 25-lap Sportsman feature had Jamie Undercoffler in front with Joe Funk get the lead on the third circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval. Once in front Funk never looked back and led current point leader Jared Umbenhauer across the finishing line followed by Brett Kressley, Brad Brightbill and Ronnie Krex.
Sean Merkel was in the lead on the first lap of the 25-lap feature for the Late Models and stayed in front for almost the entire race. Second spot went to Steve Nederostek who challenged a few times in the closing laps. Jason Miller was third followed by Sam Schlosberg and Rick Todorow.
The point battles are down to just three point events left. It is a two day race weekend at Grandview.  This Saturday, August 24th the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman are in action starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, August 25th at 7 p.m. TSRS 305 Sprints and Sportsman stock cars.

FULL STORY
JON KELLNER SR. TOPS HOWARD AND VONDOHREN IN NASCAR 358 MODIFIED FEATURE, MERKEL FIRST IN LATE MODELS AND FUNK TOPS IN SPORTSMAN AT GRANDVIEW ON SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 18, 2013. . .  Just about everyone in the grandstands was thinking that Jon Kellner Sr. was going to make a mistake and Duane Howard and Craig VonDohren would shoot past them in the closing laps and one of them would charge to victory. Howard had eight wins, VonDohren has five wins and Kellner had none. In fact he had not been a major factor in a Modified feature victory battle. That all changed on Saturday night when Jon Kellner, the Lansdale, PA veteran of many years of racing competition at the Grandview Speedway, was able to hold off the challenges of top performers and drive the Vince’s Towing  Recovery No. 41 to a stunning victory in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature race earning $2750 that included a $250 bonus from TP Trailers.
“I just kept going as hard as I could,” was the response when the victory lane announcer asked Kellner if he was aware that Howard and VonDohren were so close to him. “We have been having bad luck. One night we could not even get the car to the track. I really want to thank my crew for all their hard work.”
In the 25 lap Sportsman feature race it was Joe Funk of Coopersburg, PA bringing the Morrisville Tavern #14J home first for his first win of the season and Sean Merkel, Boyertown, led all the laps to win his third NASCAR Late Model feature of the season with the Merkel Rebar/Kochel Equipment No. 118 entry.
Young sophomore racer Brian Houseknecht turned a lot of heads as he charged to the front of the 28 car starting field in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature race and then set the pace for 14 laps before Jon Kellner Jr. got the best of him and took command. Kellner Jr. was able to lead five laps with his dad, Jon Sr., chasing him. At the 20 lap marker Jon Sr. charged to the front with Duane Howard and Craig VonDohren close behind. The final 10 laps was a three car battle between Kellner Sr., Howard and point leader VonDohren and when the checkered flag fell Kellner Sr. held just a narrow margin of victory over second place finisher Duane Howard (Oley). VonDohren (Oley) grabbed third while nine time track champion Jeff Strunk (Pottstown) finished fourth followed by mid-race leader Jon Kellner Jr. (Lansdale).
Veteran racing talent Jamie Undercoffler took the early lead over the 25 card starting field for the NASCAR Sportsman racers. Able to lead the first two laps Undercoffler relinguished the top spot to Joe Funk. Ron Krex challenged Funk for the lead for several laps before point leader Jared Umbenhauer took second and put heavy pressure on the leader for the balance of the feature. At the finish Funk had a slim lead as he picked up his first win of the season and the second since Sportsman racers became a regular part of Saturday night racing at Grandview. Umbenhauer (Richland) held on to grab second followed by Brett Kressley (Orfield) followed by Brad Brightbill (Sinking Spring) and Ron Krex (Harleysville).
Rick Todorow led the Late Model starting field to the green and was in front for the first lap before Sean Merkel, coming from third, took control and set the pace for three laps before Todorow was able to put his Juniper Auto Body No. 93 back in front. At nine laps Merkel charged back to the front and that is where he stayed for the balance of race. Steve Nederostek tried several times to take the lead away from Merkel but the Walnutport racer had to settle for second. Third place was earned by Jason Miller (New Tripoli) who moved to within 35 points of point leader Chuck Schutz in the battle for the title. Sam Schlosberg (Green Lane) finished fourth while Todorow held on for fifth.
Modified qualifying heat races, 12 laps in distance on the one-third-mile, banked clay oval, were won by Mike Laise, Bobby Gunther Walsh, Jon Kellner Jr. and Ron Seltman. Modified consolation races, each 10 laps, were won by Kyle Weiss and John Willman. Sportsman qualifiers, 8 laps, were won by Dean Bachman, Jamie Undercoffler and Kenny Gilmore. Late Model qualifiers, also 8 laps, had Sam Schlosberg and Sean Merkel winning.
The Hard Charger award for the Modifieds sponsored by Bobby Gunther Walsh and sponsors went to Duane Howard charging from 15th to 2nd. The Searock Lawn Care Hard Charger award for Sportsman was earned by point leader Jared Umbenhaur going from 15th to finish second and Jeff Teets’ Salvage Transport Hard Charger award for Late Models was earned by Steve Todorow going from 19th to 9th in the feature.
Cargo Trailer Sales of Lansdale had $50 gift certificates for 10th place finishers in each feature while Dan’s Deli has their special hoagies for the leader of each feature at the halfway point.  VP Racing Fuels has a $150 product bonus for the first NASCAR 358 Modified feature finisher using their fuel, $100 product bonus for the first Late Model feature finisher using their fuel and $75 product bonus for the first Sportsman feature finisher using their fuel and carrying VP decals on the race car and VP patch on uniform.
Coming up on Saturday, August 24, 7:30 p.m. is an action packed tripleheader featuring the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman stock cars in RCN Night. Just three point races remain as racers battle for the various division point titles. Adult admission is $15 while youngsters 12 and under are admitted free. Then on Sunday, August 25th, 7 p.m. the TSRS 305 Sprints make their first appearance along with the Sportsman stock cars. Adult admission will be $15, youngsters 12 and under are admitted Free.
