SHORT STORY
(radio, TV and other media with limited space)
HOWARD WINS
FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL $10,000 WHILE LISOWSKI AND SCHLOSBERG ALSO WIN AT
GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 11, 2013 . . . It took Duane Howard until
the closing laps of the Forrest Rogers Memorial presented by Pioneer Pole
Buildings to steer his backup BPG Racing No. 4 into the lead and grab the
$10,000 win in the 50 lap NASCAR 358 Modified Classic on Saturday night at
Grandview Speedway. Sam Schlosberg wheeled his Green Lane Auto Sales No. 70 to
his third 25-lap Late Model feature and Mike Lisowski took his second win of the
season in the 25-lap Sportsman feature with his M &J Construction No.
15.
A large crowd was on hand to see
Jon Kellner Jr. lead early in the 50-lap Modified main event before turning the
top spot over to Jeff Strunk. At the 27 lap marker Craig VonDohren coming from
22nd took the top spot and at 44 laps Duane Howard was able to get
the lead after starting 24th and set the pace for the balance of the
race. The win was the eighth of the season for Howard. Second place went to
VonDohren followed by Jeff Strunk, Jon Kellner Sr. and John
Willman.
Sam Schlosberg challenged Steve
Nederostek for the lead for much of the 25 lap Late Model race but in the late
laps the leader bobbled in turn four giving Schlosberg the opening he needed.
Once in front Schlosberg was able to lead the rest of the way for his third win.
Second went to Jason Miller followed by Nederostek, Wayne Pfeil and Sean
Merkel.
Mike Lisowski went to the front
of the field in the 25-lap Sportsman race near the midway point passing early
leader Joe Fanelli. Once in front he was able to hold off a late race challenge
from Jared Umbenhauer to get the win. Umbenhauer grabbed second with Joe Fanelli
taking third. Fourth and fifth were claimed by Ryan Beltz and Ryan
Lilick.
The point battles are down to just four point
events left. This Saturday, August 17th the NASCAR 358 Modifieds,
Late Models and Sportsman are in action starting at 7:30
p.m.

DUANE
HOWARD WINS 43RD ANNUAL FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL PRESENTED BY PIONEER
POLE BUILDINGS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY, SCHLOSBERG AND LISOWSKI ALSO
WINNERS
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 11, 2013 . . . “You should have been
there.” That is what race fans will be saying to their friends that could not
make it to Grandview Speedway for the 43rd running of the Forrest
Rogers Memorial presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings on Saturday night. It was
one of those races that fans will talk about for years to come. Duane Howard,
driving a backup BPG Racing No.4 and starting 24th, took the lead from Craig
VonDohren with just a few laps remaining and then held off point leader
VonDohren to earn (and he did work for it) his eighth NASCAR 358 Modified
victory of the season.
The victory for Howard earned
him the $10,000 first place money, $250 in bonus bucks from TP Trailers of
Limerick, $200 Hard Charger bonus from Bobby Gunther Walsh and his sponsors for
charging from 24th to victory and $150 worth of VP Racing fuel for
winning while using gas. It was the second time that the Oley, PA racer won the
prestigious Memorial race run in memory of the man who had the idea and turned
it into Grandview Speedway.
The 25-lap main event for Late
Models was won by Sam Schlosberg
wheeling his own Green Lane Auto Sales No. 70 to his third win of the season
while Mike Lisowski put his M&J Construction No. 15 in the Sportsman 25-lap
feature for the second time this season.
The 50-lap feature for the
NASCAR 358 Modifieds got off to a bad start when Kyle Follweiler got sideways in
front of the field coming off the fourth turn on the first lap causing a huge
multi-car tangle. Once the mess was cleaned up and a couple of cars were towed
to the pits Jon Kellner Jr. took command of the actual start of the race with
Eric Biehn challenging. A three car tangle in the first turn had the caution out
and Chris Esposito towed to the pits. On the restart Kellner Jr. was again in
front but was now being challenged by his dad Jon Kellner Sr. and Jeff
Strunk.
A bumper off a car on the
backstretch brought out a debris caution and Ray Swinehart went to the pits
lacking a bumper. The restart had Kellner Jr. still in front but it was now a
five car race for the lead as Jeff Strunk, Craig VonDohren, Kellner Sr. and
Duane Howard were chasing the leader.
With 40 percent of the race
completed Strunk, a nine time track champion who is without a win this season,
charged to the front and set the pace until the 27th lap when
VonDohren, the current NASCAR 358 Modified point leader, was able to take
command,
At 30-laps in the record book
VonDohren was in front with Strunk, Howard, Kellner Sr. and John Willman forming
the top five.
With 41 laps finished Howard,
who had qualified for the feature through the consolation just as VonDohren had,
was now nipping on the rear of VonDohren’s Pioneer Pole Building No. 1c. Just a
few laps later Howard was able to take advantage of slower traffic and get by
VonDohren and then led the rest of the way to grab the rich win. Second spot, right on the rear of the winner,
went to VonDohren (Oley) who continues to maintain a comfortable lead in the
chase for the championship. Jeff Strunk (Pottstown) finished third followed by
Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale) and John Willman (Birdsboro).
In victory lane Howard jumped
out of the car waving the checkered flag yelling “Take that baby!!!” Howard gave
his team much of the credit for being able to roll out a plain white backup car
and being able to take it to victory. Howard was upset that lapped cars were
such a factor. “Craig (VonDohren) got caught with some of the slower cars and
that cost him the win,” said Howard.
Von Dohren was disappointed with the finish and commented that he was “first loser.” Third place finisher Jeff Strunk called it a good run for his No. 4* team, “I thought we had something for them tonight.”
Steve Nederostek charged to the
front in the 25-lap Late Model feature and looked to be on his way to victory
but Sam Schlosberg challenged him for much of the race and with 18 laps
completed the leader bobbled in the fourth turn giving Schlosberg the
opportunity to take the lead. Once in front Schlosberg (Green Lane) was able to
charge to the checkered flag and pick up win number three on the season. Second
spot went to Jason Miller (New Tripoli) who got under Nederostek on the final
lap while Nederostek (Walnutport) finished third. Wayne Pfeil (Mohnton) was in
the thick of the action all night and settled for fourth while previous week
feature winner Sean Merkel (Boyertown) finished fifth. Current point leader
Chuck Schutz had a tough night and did not finish the feature and that has
created a three driver battle for the point title between him, Danny Snyder and
Jason Miller with less than 100 points separating the
three.Von Dohren was disappointed with the finish and commented that he was “first loser.” Third place finisher Jeff Strunk called it a good run for his No. 4* team, “I thought we had something for them tonight.”
Sean Weiss led the feature field in the 25-lap Sportsman feature for a couple of laps before getting high in the fourth turn and allowing Joe Fanelli to charge to the front. Once in front Fanelli was able to set a quick pace with Ryan Beltz and Ryan Lilick challenging. Fanelli, often called “The Geezer”, held the top spot until the 11th lap when Mike Lisowski, coming from seventh, took the lead. Once in from Lisowski had a fairly easy time of it until the closing laps when current point leader Jared Umbenhauer, coming from 15th starting spot, challenged. Lisowski (Minersville0 was able to hold on to the top spot to get his second win of the season while Umbenhauer (Richland) finished second and increased his lead in the point battle. Third place was earned by Joe Fanelli (Exton) for his best effort since joining the Sportsman ranks. Ryan Beltz (Harleysville) finished fourth followed by Ryan Lilick (Collegeville).
Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, each 12-laps, were
won by Jon Kellner Sr., Tim Buckwalter, Todd Smith and Eric Biehn. The 10-lap
Modified consolation races went to Craig VonDohren and Don Norris Jr. The
Sportsman qualifiers, each 8 laps, were won by Jared Umbenhauer, Ryan Lilick and
Brad Brightbill while the 8-lap consolation race went to Craig Whitmoyer. The
two eight lap qualifiers for the Late Models were won by Sam Schlosberg and
Wayne Pfeil.
The Hard Charger award for the Modifieds
sponsored by Bobby Gunther Walsh and sponsors went to Duane Howard for charging
from 24th to 1st.
The Searock Lawn Care Hard
Charger award for Sportsman was earned by Jared Umbenhauer for racing from
15th to second in the feature and the Jeff Teets’ Salvage Transport
Hard Charger award for Late Models went to Mike Kellner going from 18th to
9th.
Cargo Trailer Sales of Lansdale had $50 gift
certificates for 10th place finishers in each feature while Dan’s Deli has their
special hoagies for the leader of each feature at the halfway point. VP Racing Fuels has a $150 product bonus for
the first NASCAR 358 Modified feature finisher using their fuel, $100 product
bonus for the first Late Model feature finisher using their fuel and $75 product
bonus for the first Sportsman feature finisher using their fuel and carrying VP
decals on the race car and VP patch on uniform.
Coming up
on Saturday, August 17 and 24th, 7:30 p.m. are action packed tripleheaders
featuring the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman stock cars. Just
four point races remain going into August 17th as racers battle for the various
division point titles. Adult admission is $15 while youngsters 12 and under are
admitted free. A special Sunday event is set for August 25th, 7 p.m.
featuring 305 Sprint Cars and Sportsman. Adult admission will be $16 while
youngsters 12 and under will be admitted FREE.
