Electrifying: Ryan Watt
Upsets 67-Car Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels ‘Clash at the Can’
Wednesday At Penn Can Speedway; Registers Biggest Triumph Of His
Career
SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Ryan Watt electrified Penn Can
Speedway on Wednesday night.
Watt, the Bridgeport
(N.J.) Speedway regular from Boyertown, Pa., put his name in lights as an upset
winner of the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels 'Clash at the Can'
contested in front of a full grandstand at the Susquehanna County oval. The
60-lap Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour-sanctioned big-block/small-block
Modified event co-promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC and track
managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox drew a record turnout of 67
cars.
For Watt, winning the
‘Clash at the Can’ was an instant career
highlight.
"This is awesome," he
said after climbing to the roof of his Ron Roberts-owned No. 14w in Victory
Lane. "It is by far the biggest win ever for
me."
A total of $34,000 in
posted purse money, bonuses and contingency awards was distributed during the
richest evening in Penn Can history. Watt collected a base winner's share of
$5,000, plus $555 in lap money, $50 from Manmiller Electric for a heat-race win,
a guaranteed starting position in the Fulton (N.Y.) Speedway Outlaw 200 in
October, a $1,000 website package from Elite 3 Web Design, a $100 credit from
Bob Hilbert Sportswear, a party sub from Subway of Hallstead, Pa., 28 beers from
Lakey's Tavern (one for each lap led) and a custom trophy from S&W Awards in
Lindley, N.Y.
Watt started the 60-lap
main from 10th position. Out front, Grandview (Pa.) Speedway regular and former
two-time Penn Can champion Mike Gular pressed his self-owned No. 53 into the
lead from a pole starting position.
Early on, Gular set a
torrid pace in his Morrison-powered Teo-Pro car, pulling away from the field.
Watt found the outside
lane of the Penn Can oval to his liking. The 33-year-old Watt charged into third
place on lap 21, trailing Gular and track regular Bobby Trapper. He swept past
Trapper for second on lap 28 and just four circuits later executed a power move
past Gular for the top spot.
Despite three caution
periods in the final 20 laps, Watt convincingly drove to victory, his first ever
at Penn Can. He is the fourth different winner in four ‘Clash’ editions.
"We ran well here last
year," Watt said of two top-10 finishes in the 2012 special events including a
fifth in the 'Clash' one year ago. "Tonight the car was good in warm-ups and the
heat race. I was almost afraid to make any changes for the
feature."
Gular, of Green Lane,
Pa., held on for a second-place finish. The 30-year-old driver earned the
largest payout of his racing career as a result. He collected the $4,000
second-place money, plus $810 in lap money and a $100 credit from Bob Hilbert
Sportswear.
"We needed this," said
Gular, who is funding his own team this year. "Money has been tight. We haven't
had a good year at all. We almost didn't make it tonight after we got wrecked
pretty bad on Saturday.
"Our car got loose at
the end. I didn't have anything for Ryan, but I'm happy with second. There were
a lot of good cars behind me."
Tim McCreadie of
Watertown, N.Y., finished third in Vinnie Salerno's No. 4 Teo-Pro car. McCreadie
started eighth. The former World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion earned
$2,500 for his efforts.
Dale Planck of Homer,
N.Y., guided Mike Payne's No. 7z to a fourth-place result. Planck, who pocketed
$1,800, ran his first Modified feature at Penn Can after he failed to qualify
for the last two 'Clash' events.
Fourteenth-starter
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., finished fifth in Glenn Hyneman's No. 126 despite a
right-rear tire going down. Howard earned
$1,500.
Finishing sixth through
10th, respectively, were 20th-starter Jimmy Phelps of Baldwinsville, N.Y., in
the Heinke-Baldwin Racing No. 98H ($1,400); 19th-starter Brett Tonkin of
Carbondale, Pa., driving the No. 176 owned by his older brother Garth Jr.
($1,300); former Penn Can champion Kevin Hartnett of Barto, Pa., from 17th
($1,200); track regular Joey Colsten of Binghamton, N.Y., ($1,100); and
15th-starter Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., who started 15th in Tadd Parks'
No. 1 ($1,000).
Manmiller Electric heat
winners, earning $50 each, were teenager Tyler Dippel (Wallkill, N.Y.), Grant
Hilfiger (Canadensis, Pa.), Steve Babicek (Binghamton, N.Y.), Watt, Billy Decker
(Unadilla, N.Y.), Brian Weaver (Windsor, N.Y.) and Bobby Trapper (Scranton,
Pa.).
Rick Laubach
(Quakertown, Pa.), Matt Sheppard (Waterloo, N.Y.) and Ryan Godown (Ringoes,
N.J.) were consolation victors.
Bobby Varin of Sharon
Springs, N.Y., won the unique 6 1/2-lap Trackside Products 'Dash into the Clash'
to earn $650, including his entry into the main event. Varin was driving the Tom
Umbenhauer No. 19.
Orange County (N.Y.)
Fair Speedway regular Brian Krummel of Middletown, N.Y., utilized an
outside-pole starting position to lead from start-to-finish and earn a $1,000
payday in the Crate 602 Sportsman main
event.
Krummel's most
formidable challenge came in the final laps from Tyler Dippel, who had raced
from 19th to finish second. Dippel
pulled even with Krummel once with two laps remaining but a caution negated the
move. Dippel won his heat race but was
disqualified for an improper wheel on his car and was sent to the consolation,
which he won.
Alex Stanton of
Susquehanna, Pa., Butch Green of Newark Valley, N.Y., and invader Mike Sabia of
Easton, Conn., trailed. Sabia started 20th.
Crate 602 Sportsman
heat winners for the 27 cars on hand were Paul Rooney (Thompson, Pa.), Dusty
Barton (Susquehanna, Pa.) and Stanton.
Dippel topped the consolation.
The 'Clash at the Can'
program had been scheduled for Tuesday, but soaking rains on Monday and a
forecast of additional rain pushed the event back 24
hours.
Next up for BD
Motorsports Media LLC is the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. 'Dirty Jersey 60' at
New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway on Tuesday, June 18 (rain date: June 19( featuring the
Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds and Open vs. Crate Sportsman in the
'Turnpike 25' special. The event is a co-promotion involving Brett Deyo and dirt
Modified driving star Stewart Friesen. To learn more, visit www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
CLASH QUIPS: Legendary Carl Nagel, a Dirt
Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee and racing veteran who made his first start at
Penn Can in 1959, served as the event's grand marshal. Nagel registered 200
career wins and 11 track championships during his long career. He won his first
championship at Penn can in '65 and earned his 100th victory at the track in
'81.
Nagel was dressed in a
tuxedo to give the call to fire the engines after speaking to the crowd and
reflecting on his years in the sport….
Jimmy Phelps drew a
rise from the crowd in his heat race. Phelps No. 98H, via a tangle, vaulted
nose-first into the turn-four retention pond, where the car was partially
submerged. After being pulled out of the pond, Phelps restarted from the rear
and qualified with a last-lap pass....
Australia's Peter
Britten was a first-time Penn Can participant but failed to qualify after a
consolation spin. Britten was driving the Mike Marold Jr. No. 7M, renumbered No.
7A for the night....
Danny Johnson was the
first car out of the main after contact on the opening lap busted the front end
of the Brad Grammes-owned No. 5....
Event apparel, produced
by Bob Hilbert Sportswear, was a total sell-out. Hilbert, incidentally, was a
first-time Penn Can visitor on Wednesday....
Brian Weaver saw a
solid top-10 run end seven laps from the finish with an oil
leak....
Fans were entertained
by a beach ball bounce and several giveaways during breaks in the program.
Mess's Fireworks of Great Bend, Pa. provided a spectacular display on the pace
laps for the Modified feature....
