COZZE WINS 1st OF SEASON IN MODIFIEDS, BEACH TAKES 2ND OF YEAR IN SPORTSMAN,
BECKER WINS ROADRUNNERS, STREET STOCKS TO WALLS
MINERSVILLE, PA - MAY
18th, 2013
Frank Cozze was finally able to shake off some early season
gremlins to park the Norm Hansell #357 car in victory at Big Diamond Speedway on
Friday evening.
Ricky Yetter bolted into the lead from his pole starting
spot, followed by Brad Arnold and Kevin Albert Jr. Yetter was able to hold on
to the top spot despite three caution flags in the events first fives laps.
Following a lap five restart, the event went clean and green the rest of the
way. Yetter still led after the resart, but Cozze, Craig Von Dohren, and Duane
Howard were quietly moving forward from their 5th, 12th, and 11th starting
positions respectively. By the events halfway mark, Cozze began applying
pressure to Yetter, but each time Yetter would prevail. At the same time, Von
Dohren and Howard had a spirited battle going on for the 3rd and 4th positions
that had the fans on their feet. Coming down to take the two to go signal,
Cozze was finally able to clear Yetter and take over the top spot. From there
Cozze was able to drive home to the checkered flag for his first ever Big
Diamond Speedway victory in the 358 Modifieds, and 2nd of his career at the
track. Von Dohren and Howard were able to get by Yetter on the final lap for
the 2nd and 3rd positions, followed by Yetter and Albert. Meme Desantis, Jeff
Strunk, who came from the rear after an early race spin, Doug Manmiller, Dale
Hartz, and Andy Burkhart rounded out the top ten positions.
Wayne Witmer
led the Sportsman feature early from his front row spot, followed closely by AJ
Gerhart and Doug Hendricks. Hendrick's night ended on lap three after slight
contact with Gerhart coming off turn two broke something in his cars front end.
Andy Cozze did a slow rollover in turn three coming down to complete lap eight
which led to red flag conditions on the speedway. Cozze was shaken, but
otherwise fine from the incident. On the restart, Witmer continued to lead, but
Kevin Beach was a man on a mission from his tenth starting position. Beach was
able to wrestle the top spot away from Witmer on lap number twelve, and drove
away to his second win of the season at the track. Ray Woodall Jr. and Billy
Moyer Jr. were able to get by Witmer late in the race for the 2nd and 3rd spots,
followed by Witmer and Mike Lisowski, winner last time the Sportsman raced at
the track. Corey Renninger, Robin Schultz, Jared Umbernhauer, Harry Landis, and
Heath Metzger rounded out the top ten spots.
Jeremy Becker was able to
take the win in the Roadrunner division after the top four drivers at the time
were eliminated in a crash late in the race. Something appeared to break on
leader Kyle Killian's car going into turn one, slowing it considerably and
leaving Glenn Rowan, Terry Kramer Jr. and Andrew Fayash III with nowhere to go.
All four cars were eliminated from the event. Killian was shaken and taken to a
local hospital, but later released. Becker was followed very closely by Jim
Kost, TJ Fitzpatrick, Devin Trexler, and Tim Fitzpatrick Jr.
Mike Walls
was the victor in the 20 lap Street Stock event, followed by Randy Zechman,
Scott Thunberg, Marc Berzowski, and Jeff Haag. Mike Kiehl crossed the line in
3rd, but failed post race tech.
The entire evenings events were run with
heavy hearts after last Sunday's tragic death of popular competitor Andy Fayash
Jr. Announcer Tim Pitts provided an emotional speech regarding Andy before the
prayer and national anthem that had tears in the eyes of everyone that knew
Andy. Most every competitor displayed an American flag on the back of their car
during the evenings events as a tribute to Andy. That was always a trademark on
any vehicle Andy ever raced. Andy will be sorely missed by everyone at Big
Diamond Speedway.
Racing returns to Big Diamond Speedway next Friday, May
24th with a 30 lap event for the ZY Pyrotechnics 358 Modifieds paying $3,000 to
win and $300 to take the green. This is third or five events this season paying
$3,000 to win, and so far Craig Von Dohren is two for two. Also on the card will
be the Sportsman, Roadrunners, and Street Stocks. First heat hits the track at
8:15 PM. The entire evenings events will be brought to you by Ken's Tire, with
locations in Pottsville, Cressona, and Frackville.
The following week on
Friday, May 31st, the 358 Modifieds will be joined by the Sportsman,
Roadrunners, Street Stocks, and 305 Sprint Cars.
