A Race for the Racers: Lucrative, Non-Top-Heavy Purse Planned for Penn Can Speedway's June 11 'Clash at the Can' Spectacular; Modified Racers Earn $1,000 for 10th & $500 to Start in Race of Champions Event!

SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Competitors, mark your calendars.

On Tuesday night, June 11, Penn Can Speedway will play host to a dirt Modified spectacular tailor-made to benefit racers. A restructured purse for the fourth annual 'Clash at the Can' at the Susquehanna County rewards those finishing throughout the entire field in the big-block/small-block Modified midweek program.

The 2013 'Clash at the Can' is the anecdote to the top-heavy purses prevalent in Modified racing. The 'Clash at the Can' is a co-promotion involving Penn Can track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox and special events promoter Brett Deyo.

The 'Clash at the Can' is headlined by a big-block/small-block 60-lap event sanctioned by the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour and carries sponsorship from title marketing partners Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. and VP Racing Fuels. Joining the Modifieds is a 25-lap Crate 602 Sportsman event paying no less than $1,000 to the winner for an open-wheel doubleheader. A rain date has been established of Wednesday, June 12 if needed.

"Every year, I listen to as many racers as I can from all over," said event co-promoter Deyo. "The input I received last year was that there were too many special races paying 'top-heavy' purses where the money was not spread through the field. That sentiment came from across the board: weekly racers right up through the full-time touring series drivers.

"I took that information back to Reed and Al when we had our meeting in the fall and we came up with a purse that should turn a lot of heads and be especially beneficial to the weekend racer."

The base winner's share for the 'Clash at the Can' of '13 will be $5,000 (plus lap money, contingency awards and other bonuses). The second-place driver earns $4,000; third: $2,500; fourth: $1,800; and fifth: $1,500. The pay structure for sixth through 10th is as follows: sixth: $1,400; seventh: $1,300; eighth: $1,200; ninth: $1,100; and 10th: $1,000.

The event will pay $500 to take the green flag. The total purse has not decreased from last year's 'Clash at the Can' which paid $10,000 to the winner.

Additionally, valuable RoC Dirt Modified Tour points will be up for grabs as drivers chase the crown. Penn Can is one of three tracks (joining New York's Five Mile Point and Utica-Rome) to host a RoC Modified event every year since the tour's inception in 2005.

"This is a very robust purse from first to last," Deyo said. "The cost of competing on a short track like Penn Can, combined with our payout, should be very attractive to all race teams. It's going to be a virtual 'who's-who' event where everybody has a shot. The track is the equalizer!"

Bonus and contingency awards will be announced as the event approaches. To become an event or marketing partner, contact Brett Deyo via e-mail at Deyo99H@aol.com or by phone at 845.728.2781. On the web: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.

Penn Can, a one-third-mile, tire-wear-friendly oval centrally located on the Keystone State line of the New York/Pennsylvania border, was widened and reconfigured extensively prior to the year-end 'King of the Can' last October. The result was three-wide racing and plenty of positive feedback from both track regulars and invaders.

With Central New York Sportsman racer Katelyn Kane working to secure bonuses and special awards, the Crate 602 Sportsman 'Clash' event will be racer-friendly as well.

In its four-year history, the 'Clash at the Can' has emerged as a marquee event on the dirt Modified calendar. Last year, Danny Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., drove to victory over a charging Ryan Godown, who had ascended from 26th starting position in Rick Clay's No. 88c.

The '11 edition featured a classic duel between dirt Modified superstar Billy Decker and then unheralded Accord (N.Y.) Speedway regular Danny Tyler. Decker, of Unadilla, N.Y., ultimately completed a late-race pass of Cottekill, N.Y.’s Tyler to park his John and Laura Wight-owned LJL Racing No. 91 in Victory Lane. The win was special for Decker who launched his career at Penn Can in the 'Tiger' division.

Grandview (Pa.) Speedway regular Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., emerged from a side-by-side battle with local driver Brett Tonkin of Carbondale, Pa., to win the inaugural 'Clash at the Can' in '10.

BD Motorsports Media returns to Penn Can in October to co-promote the 'King of the Can' 14th annual Modified event on Friday, Oct. 18, headlined by a 50-lap main paying $5,014 to win and $314 to take the green flag. GM 602 Sportsman and Street Stocks complete the Friday card, which carries a Sunday (Oct. 20) rain date.
