AFTON, NY – A neat-and-tidy fairgrounds in New York’s Chenango County will be a Mecca for dirt Modified racing in July.
I-88
Speedway in Afton, N.Y., is set to be the backdrop to the first-ever ‘Crazy 8s
Special’ on Wednesday night, July 24. The 48-lap big-block/small-block Modified
event will offer a rich purse at the centrally located Southern Tier facility. A
two-division midweek double-hitter includes Gary Montgomery’s touring BRP Can Am
360 Late Model Series.
The
first-ever ‘Crazy 8s’ event will offer the Modified race winner a mammoth $6,888
(with gambler’s fee - $4,888 without) plus lap money and bonuses from a payout
totaling more than $25,000. Drivers finishing throughout the field will be
rewarded with a healthy pay envelope.
I-88
Speedway managers Ron Ford and Jamie Page have teamed up with Brett Deyo of BD
Motorsports Media LLC to co-promote the Wednesday special at the
three-tenths-mile clay oval.
“I’m
very excited to be part of the ‘Crazy 8s’ event,” Deyo said. “Ron and Jamie have
done a phenomenal job with the facility at I-88. The place looks better than it
ever has and they’ve brought Afton back to life on Friday nights.
“This
show has a tremendous amount of potential to put I-88 Speedway on the
map.”
“We have done well on our own, but having the race track and full-time work doesn’t allow us to do everything we’d like,” Page said. “I’m excited to bring Brett on board to make this event something special. I know he is happy to get back to Afton because that’s where he started promoting.”

The
very first BD Motorsports Media event – the inaugural Short Track SuperNationals
– was contested at I-88, then under the Afton Speedway moniker, in October 2006.
The speedway was directed by Pat and Janet Jordan at the time. Mike Ricci of
Rosendale, N.Y., won that event over a stout 54-car field.
“I
got my start on the promotional side of the sport at Afton, so it’s always been
a place I wanted to get back to when the time was right,” Deyo said. “I’ve
watched with admiration the job Ron and Jamie have done over the last few
seasons. When this opportunity opened up, I jumped on it.”
Rules
for the special event will be liberal to allow drivers and race teams from all
the surrounding areas to compete. The July 24 date is clear on the dirt Modified
landscape, showing no conflicts with the Super DIRTcar Series and Race of
Champions schedules.
“We’re
hoping to assemble a diverse cross-section of drivers fans won’t want to miss,”
Deyo said.
For
race teams, the posted purse for the ‘Crazy 8s’ should be very attractive. The
payout for second through 10th
positions, respectively, is as follows: second, $3,888; third, $2,288; fourth,
$1,688; fifth, $1,488; sixth, $1,288; seventh, $1,188; eighth; $1,088; ninth,
$988; and 10th,
$888.
The race will offer $388 to take the green flag.

Drivers
can expect a long list of bonus and special awards to be distributed on race
night in addition to lap money. Those interested in marketing opportunities

The
touring BRP Can Am 360 Late Model Series will participate in heat races, a
B-Main and a 30-lap feature in a first-time I-88 Speedway visit.
As
part of the promotional agreement, ‘Crazy 8s’ apparel and a souvenir program
book will be available at the event.
I-88
Speedway is located off I-88 Exit 7 in the Village of Afton, N.Y. (outside of
Binghamton, N.Y.) and is easily accessible from the Capital District,
southeastern New York, Pennsylvania/New Jersey, Central and Western New York. To

I-88
Speedway joins a diverse promotional schedule for BD Motorsports Media LLC that

DIRTcar Series co-promotion with Stewart Friesen on June 18), two events at Penn
Can (Pa.) Speedway (the ‘Clash at the Can’ June 11 and ‘King of the Can’ Oct.
18) and the traditional Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point (N.Y.)
Speedway on Oct. 12.
