RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES
ROBBIE STILLWAGGON. . . .BEGINNING 2013 WITH AN EYE ON THE RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES TITLE
In 2012, Robbie Stillwaggon of Burlington, NJ pulled off an amazing upset, driving the Fred Kennedy owned 360 sprint car to the Rislone URC Sprint Championship Title.
At age twenty-four, Stillwaggon endured the pressures of the battle for the URC Championship title, that was decided at the final race of the season. Calm and at ease, Robbie Stillwaggon entered the features only URC season finale at Grandview in mid-October and finished a strong third, actually closing in on the leader for a possible challenge for the win. “Last season was just an amazing run for Robbie, he demonstrated patience and maturity on the race track and professionalism in the pits and at various social functions. It’s a pleasure to have him racing with our organization”, commented Bob Miller, who along with John and Cher Zimmerman are the owners of URC. The United Racing Company will present the sixty-fifth season for URC in 2013, and they remain, the Nation’s Oldest traveling sprint car organization. The season opener is set for the Big Diamond Raceway on Friday night, April 26.
For the coming season, Robbie Stillwaggon now has an eye on his second URC Championship. Returning as driver of the Fred Kennedy owned sprinter, he has the pressure of winning his first title off his back. The new season will bring about a strategy to win races and with that, the championship will follow.
Stillwaggon started his racing career in 1993 at the age of five and his first win was in a quarter midget at Phoenixville. In 2007, Stillwaggon won his first URC feature, taking the victory at the Delaware International Speedway. “What I do remember about that race is, it seemed like was never going to end”, said Stillwaggon.
“In 2012, we started the season knowing we only had twenty race dates on the schedule, and that did mean that the car and I had to come to the track well prepared”. Stillwaggon continued to say, “Preparation was the key and Fred (Kennedy), my Dad and crew did a great job and were flawless in their efforts”. Throughout most of the season, Robbie battled with Davey Franek in the title hunt. Franek came to URC from the 358 sprint ranks and was immediately a contender. “He (Franek) was good all year and I enjoyed racing side-by-side with him. No doubt, Davey Franek is a fierce competitor”, said Stillwaggon.
“It was about halfway through the season when we realized that we were really in contention for the championship title”, commented Stillwaggon. “We knew we were fast and it was just matter of finishing. Going into the last race at Grandview, I knew the car would be fast and I was ready but I was just worried about the unexpected which usually happens at Grandview”, said Stillwaggon. “With all that said, as a team we wanted to win the championship, especially for Fred, but it wasn’t until I stood on the homestretch with the fireworks going off, that I knew how important it was to me”.
So that often elusive first championship is behind the young sprint car driver from Burlington, NJ and as he looks to 2013, winning features and repeating the championship is the goal. Competition within URC will be turned up a notch in the coming year and Robbie Stillwaggon is up to the challenge. URC’s living legend Kramer Williamson will be returning to the URC battles along with 2012 URC Rookie of the Year Dan Mazy. One new entry for 2013 is Keith Prutzman of Hamburg, PA along with the always rigid competitors to include JJ Grasso, Kevin Darling, Dave Ely, Ed Aikin, Joey Biasi, Randy West, Art Liedl, Jonathan Swanson and Scott Lutz just to name a few.
The Rislone URC Sprint Series will open at the Big Diamond Raceway on Friday night, April 26. The weekend of May 10 and May 11, URC will have their first two race weekend, visiting the Bedford Speedway on Friday night, then heading to the Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night for the $3,500 to win Jack Gunn Memorial.
