Von Dohren, Hendricks, and Brennan Crowned 2012 Big Diamond Champions

The Pottsville Zone in Pottsville, PA was the location for the 2012 Big Diamond Speedway awards banquet. A capacity crowd was on hand for the event, led by track announcer Tim Pitts, who was master of ceremonies for the evening. After a delicious family style dinner, point fund monies and trophies were presented to the top performers in each division. The evening concluded with dancing to tunes provided by Roadrunner racing talent TJ "The DJ" Fitzpatrick.

Long time track supporter and racing talent Craig Von Dohren was the big winner in the 358 Modified division. In over 30 plus years of competing at Big Diamond, Von Dohren has done it all. He is the all time leader at the track with 74 career wins. He has captured six wins in the Georgie Stevenson Memorial, two Coalcracker 100 triumphs, and many other huge victories during his career. This year he was finally able to win his first ever point championship after a spirited season long battle with Meme Desantis. Desantis was able to hang on to second place in the year long standings and was represented by team owner Harvey Bitler at the banquet. Other drivers/owners on hand to collect their awards were: Bert Jones for Rich Laubach (3rd), Jeff Strunk (4th), Kevin Albert Jr. (5th), Tiffany Hoffman for Keith Hoffman (6th), and Shawn Fitzpatrick for Doug Manmiller (7th). Special awards in the Modified division went to Mike Mammana for Rookie of the Year and Kevin Albert Jr. for Most Improved Driver.

In the Sportsman division, Doug Hendricks was able to take home the championship trophy over second place finisher Kevin Beach Jr. Like Von Dohren, this was also the first Big Diamond point title for Hendricks. Third place hardware was received by Ray Woodall Jr., with Charles Webber finishing fourth and Tim Fitzpatrick ending up fifth in the final standings. Also on hand to collect their awards were Shawn Fitzpatrick (6th), Wayne Witmer (8th), Mike Glass (9th), and Heath Metzger (10th). Special awards for the Sportsman went to Mike Glass for Rookie of the Year and Charles Webber for Most Improved Driver.

Joey Brennan was the big winner in the Roadrunner division, winning his first ever title in convincing fashion over 2nd place Chip Kennedy. Jim Kost, Shon Elk, and Terry Kramer Jr. finished 3rd thru 5th respectively in the final year end standings. Special awards in the Roadrunners went to Terry Kramer Jr. for Rookie of the Year and Joey Brennan for Most Improved Driver.

Special hand-sewn checkered flags were awarded to the leading feature winners in each division. Those flags went to Meme Desantis in the Modifieds with four feature wins, Charles Webber in the Sportsman with two wins, and Joey Brennan in the Roadrunners with a track-best six feature wins.

The 2012 banquet was the final event in the over 40 year career of track promoters Fritz and Krista Roehrig. As mentioned in last week’s AARN, the track has been sold to new owners Jake and Jasmine Smulley. Work is already well underway for the 2013 racing season. A test and tune will be held for all divisions on Sunday, March 17th, 2013. The following Sunday, March 24th will be opening day for the Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners. The Modifieds will be running for a cool $3,500 to win and $300 to take the green flag on opening day. Also just confirmed this weekend is the 2013 Big Diamond/Little Diamond Speedway car show at the Fairlane Village Mall March 3rd thru March 9th. More and more exciting details about the 2013 season will be released as they become available.
