RONNIE PECK AND DAVE SMITH EARN VINTAGE CAR VICTORIES…

September 30, 2012, Bechtelsville PA – Mother Nature secured the confines of Grandview Speedway with another pleasant Sunday afternoon for racing, which found two drivers grabbing their first victories of the season. Dave Bentley Jr. (Small Car 100-lap Enduro) and Katie Todorow (Ladies Championship 50-lap Race) each garnered a season’s first triumph while veteran racer Pat Hires (Big Car 100-lap Enduro) became a two-time winner.

In the first Blast from the Past Vintage Car 15-lap feature, former Grandview Speedway track champion Ronnie Peck thundered to a convincing victory and Dave Smith, in only his second start of the season, won the second 15-lap affair.

A healthy field of 35-cars started the “Avon Calling”100-lap Big Car Enduro. Points leader Chuck Eckert and former Late Model competitor at the speedway Carl Ruppert were the early race leaders. Hires, who races out of Levittown PA, began his victory quest from the 23^rd position and quickly advanced to the front. Once Hires darted past Ruppert for the top spot, he virtually never looked back.

The Hires crew worked diligently to repair transmission issues on the car from the previous Sunday. Although, the always quick #2 machine was slightly losing its power during the event’s final moments, Hires remained the dominant car and nursed it to the finish line first. It was his fourth overall victory of 2012 (2-Big Car, 2-Small Car) and the eighth of his Grandview Speedway career between the two divisions.

Back on Sept. 23, Chuck Detweiler (Schuylkill Haven PA) seized a season’s best of third. This week he advanced one more position as he grabbed the runner-up spot. Earlier leader Eckert (Schuylkill Haven PA) settled into third for most of the contest and finished there. Always a steady top ten racer, Brandon Guyer (Ivyland PA) finished fourth and previous race winner Drew Ott (Schwenksville PA) made the long haul from 30^th to fifth.

Johnny Sacks (Perkiomenville PA) matched his season’s best finish of sixth, while Darrel Herman (Allentown PA) advanced from 15^th to seventh. Justen Steigerwalt (Barto PA) drove to a second straight top ten effort of eighth and Joel Pilgert (Boyertown PA) made it three top ten finishes on the year for a ninth place result. After taking a race off, Mike Fiskaldo (Temple PA) returned to the line-up and nailed down a tenth place finish.

In the 7^th of 8 point races for the Scott Dunn Auto Service NEETS Dirt Tour Enduro, several drivers made their first starts of the season. The list included: Bill Wentz, Doug Nickerson, Katie Lyons, Bill Lester and Ralph Bankes. Nickerson enjoyed the best luck as he finished in the 19^th position.

In the “Pink” 100-lap Small Car Enduro, most drivers found that it was best not to be the race leader. Dan Daigneault, Pat Hires, Scott Schaeffer, Jimmy Neiman and Steve Todorow, each encountered problems while leading the event. 2009 tour champion Dave Bentley Jr. (Downingtown PA) made a late race pass over Joel Matter to take possession of the race lead and eventual victory. It was the seventh of Bentley’s impressive career at Grandview. Bentley became the points leader by virtue of his win with only one race remaining.

Art Kulik (Bensalem PA), the points leader heading into the event, finished in the runner-up spot, his third top five of the season. Dave Bentley Sr. (Woodlyn PA) continued his strong 2012 with a third place finish while popular racer Dan Daigneault (Earlville), who actually led during a pair of different times in the event, settled for fourth after a pit stop. Another driver in the championship chase, Ken Wallace (Woodlyn PA) made the leap from 25^th to fifth.

Katie Todorow (Quakertown PA) finished a Small Car season’s best of sixth and the always consistent Phil Levering (Parkerford PA) was seventh. Mike Dunn (Yardville NJ), a race winner this season, drove his two-race old car to an eighth place result. Pete Wharton of nearby Bally PA chalked up another top ten, his fourth of the season, for ninth. Ross Coderoni (Glen Gardner NJ) rounded out the top ten. Joel Matter actually crossed the line in second, however, his car failed post race technical inspection.

Drivers making their first start of the season in the Small Car class included: Jessica Dunn, legendary Enduro racer Scott Schaeffer, and George Garies. Dunn enjoyed the finest finish of 13^th. Schaeffer steering a car he once drove at the Linda’s (PA) Speedway nearly 20 years ago, did lead the event for a while until his car retired to the infield.

Katie Todorow made a fantastic two car pass into the race lead of the 50-lap Ladies Championship race and went on to take the victory, her first of the season. Linsey Rummel (Parkerford PA) finished second and it was enough to clinch the Ladies Division point championship. Steph Kramer (Barto PA) set quickest lap in the event but settled for third. Terez Kuronya (Boyertown PA) finished fourth and J. Dunn (Yardville NJ) rounded out the top five.

As part of the annual Fem-Duro event, the fine folks at Bux-Mont Awards supplied pink trophies to the race winners of each event.

Ronnie Peck, who has a combined win total at Grandview Speedway of 26, has been strong all season in the vintage cars. The 1974 and 1975 Late Model track champion walked away with top honors in the first 15-lap vintage car event. It was his second straight victory. Brian Gagliardo drove the Gerald Chamberlain replica #76 to a runner-up finish while Bob Snyder, a winner this season, steered the Jeff Strunk rookie car replica to a third place result. Larry Sullivan and Steve Tomlinson rounded out the top five.

In the second 15-lap feature, Dave Smith drove a former Randy Bok original car to the winner’s circle. This Falcon bodied car, which actually delivered two championships to Bok at the former Nazareth (PA) Speedway ½ mile, was the class of the field in race #2. Woody Nyce steered his Coach #3 to a runner-up finish over the Will Cagle replica #24 of Charles Morrell, Tomlinson (for a second straight top five) and Steve Recker, who was driving a car that sat idle in the garage for nearly 25 years.

The stage is now set for the season’s largest NEETS Enduro race at Grandview Speedway. On Sunday October 14^th, the annual “Mutha” of all enduros will take place. The Big Cars will race in a 150-lap enduro while the Small Cars are also competing in an extra distance 150-lapper. The season finale at Grandview will offer double points as the championships will be decided. The starting field will be reverse in points which should make for some very interesting action on the speedway. As an added bonus the top ten in points challenge races will also be held. Pit gates on October 14^th will open at 8:00AM while grandstand gates open at 12:00PM. Racing begins at 1:00PM. Adult general admission is just $7.
