Showtime: Danny Tyler Upsets 67-Car
Modified Field & Earns $6,000 Short Track SuperNationals Victory; Young
Driver Earns Biggest Career Triumph at Five Mile Point
Speedway
KIRKWOOD, NY - Danny Tyler earned a
defining victory on Saturday night at Five Mile Point Speedway.
The up-and-coming star from
Cottekill, N.Y., upset a stacked 67-car field of big-block/small-block Modifieds
to win the fifth anniversary Short Track SuperNationals presented by VP Racing
Fuels and Pioneer Pole Buildings. A fourth-generation talent who competes
regularly at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway, Tyler earned a base pay of $3,500 plus
$1,500 for posting the $20 "gambler's fee" to participate in the Alpine Building
Supply 'Roll the Dice Challenge' program.
Tyler's total take in lap money,
cash and contingency awards totaled more than $6,000.
Morning rain in the Southern Tier
region subsided early in the afternoon. A clear but cold evening greeted a large
crowd filling the grandstands and pit area at the historic Five Mile Point
facility.
Tyler, 22, beat the sport's very
best to become the fifth different Short Track SuperNationals victor in the
event's five runnings.
"This is awesome," an ecstatic
Tyler said to a cheering crowd. "When I'm not racing, I pay to go watch guys
like Billy Pauch, Duane Howard and Bobby Varin.
I idolize them. To come here and pass them, I just can't believe
it.
"We finished second here last year
to (Duane) Howard. We got second to Billy Decker last year at Penn Can (Pa. in
the 'Clash at the Can' special). It's nice to run up front, but nobody remembers
who finishes second. I hope they remember who won here
tonight!"
Tyler's family owned No. 97T
started from ninth in the 32-car field. For much of the race, the top spot
belonged to legendary Billy Pauch, who started from the outside pole with the
Glenn and Bonita Hyneman-backed Keystone Racing No. 126.
Pauch outgunned pole starter Mitch
Gibbs at the outset and set a torrid pace. Track regular Shaun Walker of
Masonville, N.Y., arrived in second place at lap 11 and pressured Pauch during
the race's mid portions.
Tyler, meanwhile, was patiently
working toward the front. He drove around the outside of Walker on the 28th
circuit. One lap later, Bobby Varin, who started fourth but had dropped back in
the field, raced into third driving Tom Umbenhauer's No. 19.
With the final 24 laps around the
quarter-mile oval clicking off caution-free, Tyler and Varin began to reel in
Pauch, whose lap times began to slow.
With 10 laps to go, Pauch, Tyler
and Varin were locked into a three-car tussle for the lead. On the 46th circuit,
the leaders fanned out three-wide. Tyler opted for the outside and Varin drove
to the extreme bottom as Pauch fought to hold on in the middle.
Tyler was the new leader at lap 47
with Varin and Pauch in tow.
As that trio battled, Brian Weaver
emerged as a victory contender. Weaver, of Windsor, N.Y., started 22nd following
a consolation victory and raced inside the second half of the top-10 for much of
the race. Late in the distance, Weaver's No. 1A came to life. He ran the leaders
down from more than a straightaway back.
Entering the white flag lap, Varin
occupied the inner hub, Tyler drove the middle lane and Weaver attempted an
extreme outside sweeping pass of both. However, a lapped car slowed Weaver's
effort. Tyler narrowly held off Varin at the checkered.
Varin, of Sharon Springs, N.Y.,
enjoyed his best effort ever at Five Mile Point finishing second. The
42-year-old has entered all five SuperNationals events but had never finished
better than 10th, which he posted in the inaugural race at Afton (N.Y.) Speedway
in 2006. He failed to qualify during each of the last three editions at Five
Mile Point.
Weaver's impressive drive ended in
third spot with the Ron Dieffenbach-backed No. 1A. Pauch, of Frenchtown, N.J.,
faded fourth with a worn right-rear tire. He did earn $1,715 in lap money
including a $700 cash bonus from Dale Smith Photography for leading the halfway
lap.
I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway 2012 Modified
champion Mitch Gibbs of North Norwich, N.Y., completed the front five in the
Bryan and 'Cork' O'Hara-owned No. 2G. Gibbs started from the pole and dropped to
10th before recovering on the outside lane for fifth.
Placing sixth through 10th,
respectively, were Walker; 10th-starter Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa., Barry
White of Mertztown, Pa., (who earned $430 as the first 2012 non-winner in memory
of Tom Hager and $113 as the first Berks County, Pa., driver from Long
Family/MTL Motorsports); 20th-starter Danny Creeden of Middletown, N.Y.,
(recovering from a lap-14 tangle); and first-time Five Mile Point visitor David
Van Horn Jr. of Phillipsburg, N.J.
Modified heat winners, earning $100
each, were Mike Gular (Green Lane, Pa.), Brian Malcolm (Lake Ariel, Pa.), Tyler,
Walker, Pauch, Gibbs and Varin. Heat sponsors were Touch of Green Landscaping,
Fariello Landscaping, Trackside Products, Lias Tire/American Racer and Penn Can
Speedway's 'King of the Can' event Oct. 12-13.
Weaver, Mike Colsten of Binghamton,
N.Y., and Sammy Piazza of Lawrenceville, N.J., won the
consolations.
Mike Mahaney of King
Ferry, N.Y., drove from third to first in the 3-lap Vogel Designs Ed Tauschman
Memorial Money Run to earn a feature starting berth. The event pitted the three
drivers missing a transfer spot by one position in the consolations in one final
shot to make the main.
Shane Wolf of Susquehanna, Pa., won
the 25-lap Race of Champions Street Stock feature event. Wolf took the lead on
the 15th circuit and marched to the $400 payday. He earned a guaranteed starting
spot in the $2,000-to-win Street Stock event planned for Five Mile Point on Oct.
27.
Duane Kinne of Sidney Center, N.Y.,
topped the Four Cylinder Open 18-lap event.
Planning has already begun for the
sixth Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway in October 2013.
