Bridgeport Speedway's Most Successful Driver Jimmy Horton Takes Aim On March 31 'Poker Series' Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour Event With Dieter Schmidt's Lincoln Auto Body No. 5
BRIDGEPORT, NJ - The numbers don't lie. Jimmy Horton is the undisputed king of Bridgeport Speedway.
A track record 134 total victories: 118 in big-block Modified competition, 11 in Sprint Car racing (nine United Racing Company & two open competition) and five in small-block Modified action.
Twenty-eight winning seasons.
Nine track championships: eight in a big-block Modified (a track record - 1975, '77, '80, '82, '83, '97, '98 & 2003) and one DIRTcar 358-Modified title (2005).
The Neshanic Station, N.J., driver hopes to further build that resume in the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour 60-lap South Region clash, which also kicks off the five-race 'Poker Series' at the South Jersey oval on Sat., March 31. The 55-year-old will strap into Dieter Schmidt's Lincoln Auto Body No. 5 Troyer for the spring spectacular at the Logan Township five-eighths-mile paying $4,000 plus lap money to the victor.
North Jersey car owner Schmidt, whose race cars are synonymous with success in the Garden State, is no stranger to Bridgeport Victory Lane.
Together, Horton and Schmidt attempt to build on a productive trip south to Volusia Speedway Park in Florida
for the DIRTcar Nationals and a fourth-place finish in the RoC Dirt Modified Tour big-block Modified 'Icebreaker V' at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway last Saturday (one day after a sixth-place result in the 358-Modified Selinsgrove event).
"Last year, we couldn't finish a race with this car," Horton said. "Now, we've got the bugs worked out of it and it's going pretty good."
Horton joins an expected all star cast of drivers to include Brett Hearn, Billy Decker, Larry Wight, Pat Ward, Wade Hendrickson, Matt Sheppard, Doug Manmiller, Richie Pratt Jr., Mike Iles, Jeff Strunk, Ryan Godown, Eric Kormann, Ryan Watt, Jesse Hill and more.
