Niki Young holds off Mark Smith to claim second win of the year in “358” Sprints

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 10/8/2011 – Four-time Lincoln track champ Brian Montieth is known as “the Edge,” but he’s been far from it with racing-winning passes over the past two major shows at Lincoln Speedway.

“It’s a dirty air thing,” explained Montieth after exiting his Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator #21 in victory lane following his sixth Lincoln Speedway win of the year Saturday night, “A lot of people don’t understand that you get these things two or three car-lengths behind the other car in front you…they’re a hand-full to drive, so you have to try and stay out of that slip stream. Luckily, Scott (Zellers) got this thing working on the bottom enough that we can make the moves we gotta make.”

Montieth started third in Saturday’s 23rd Annual Hank Gentzler Manufacturers Appreciation Race and drove under outside front row starter Greg Hodnett for second in the first turns. After that, he chased polesitter and race-long leader Danny Dietrich for the first 18 laps before pulling the slider to make the race-winning pass in turns three and four of lap 19. He tried the same move unsuccessfully in the same turns following an eighth-lap restart.

“Danny was actually better than us on the short runs,” said Montieth, “He got a little loose there the longer we went, and I really didn’t want to see all those yellows and reds. If we kept getting them, I don’t think we’d have caught him.”

The red flags were for Randy Baughman, who flipped in turn three of lap four. The other red was on lap eight, when Gerard McIntyre rolled in turns three and four, collecting Danny Holtgraver and Nick Schlauch. No drivers were injured in either crash, but earlier in the evening, Lance Dewease was injured when he broke a rear axle and barrel-rolled on the backstretch while running third in his heat. Dewease was taken to Hanover Hospital, and then later transported to York Hospital for further evaluation.

Dietrich, who finished second in points to Montieth this season, settled for second, with Hodnett, 13th-starting Brad McClelland, and Justin Henderson completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were fast timer Alan Krimes, Brian Leppo, 20th-starting Cory Haas, Adam Wilt, and Ryan Bohlke.

In one of sprint car racing’s most unique events, Denise Gentzler and Hank’s Performance Products distributed more than $48,000 worth of manufacturers products and services to the 24 cars which qualified for the $4,000-to-win feature.

410 Sprint heats were won by Bohlke, Wilt, Henderson, and Bill Stine, with Johnny Mackison, Jr. winning the B-Main. Danny Dietrich won the Dash in a new six-lap track record, the second of two set on the night.

Fast time in time trials over the 37-car field was set by Alan Krimes with a new one-lap track record time of 13.200 seconds (102.273 MPH).

Niki Young became only the second repeat winner of the year in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature.

Young drew the “0” pill for the inversion and started on the pole, but it was invader Duane Mausteller who the first two laps from his outside front row starting spot. Young claimed the lead from Mausteller on lap three and led the rest of the way to take the checkered .44 seconds over a charging Mark Smith, who started third and pressured Young over the final laps.

Behind Smith in third was Mike Bittinger, with Ted Thomas, Jr. and 10th-starting Cris Eash completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were lady driver Amy Ott, 15th-starting Steve Owings, Nathan Berwager, Kyle Moody, and Tim Wagaman.

Heats for the 44 “358" sprinters were won by Young, Mausteller, Smith, and Thomas.

Twin consolations were won by Billy Johns and Kyle Purks.

Lincoln Speedway will be back in action next Saturday night, Oct. 15th, with a regular program of 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints & Thundercars. The Thundercars will be competing in their final points race of the season. Racing action gets underway at 6 PM with gates opening at 4 PM.
