$5,000-To-Win King of the Can Set For Friday, Oct. 14 At Penn Can Speedway; 2011 Track Champion Kevin Hartnett Sets Sights On Victory Against All-Star Field

SUSQUEHANNA, PA -
Purses going up in the current economy?

Yes, it does happen. Take the 2011 'King of the Can' Modified spectacular for example. The 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified event pays $5,000 to the winner with a $20 "gambler's fee" at Penn Can Speedway Friday night, Oct. 14. That is an increase of $1,000 over the 2010 event. Additionally, lap money has been collected to boost the possible cash take even higher! 'It's good to be king' at Penn Can Speedway in 2011.

Run as a BD Motorsports Media co-promotion with track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox for the first time, the 'King of the Can' is certain to attract an all-star field of Modifieds to the one-third-mile oval centrally located on the Keystone State side of the Pennsylvania/New York border.

"This year's 'King of the Can' will certainly go in the history books as one of the most lucrative for racers," event co-promoter Brett Deyo said. "Already, a tremendous amount of lap money has been collected and there is a long list of special awards that will be handed out."

Two-time Penn Can Modified champion Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., was the first official entrant for the 'King of the Can' Modified spectacular. Gular will have plenty of competition as he vies for his first triumph in Penn Can's marquee race.

Newly crowned Penn Can champion Kevin Hartnett of Troy, Pa., has filed his entry for the special event. Hartnett won four features in '11 en route to his title driving a self-owned No. 88 Teo-Pro car. For the 42-year-old driver, the championship was his first in a career spanning more than 20 years.

Pennsylvania 358-Modified star Jeff Strunk, the champion at Big Diamond and Grandview speedways this season, has set his sights on a first 'King of the Can' triumph driving the Norm Hansell-owned No. 357. Strunk, of Bechtelsville, Pa., won the '11 Season Opener at Penn Can in April. Many will recall Strunk's controversial near-victory in the 2003 'King of the Can' event. Leading late in the race Strunk and Brian Weaver tangled, sending Strunk's car spinning. Contact continued during the ensuing caution period. Jamie Shea went on to win that event.

A complete entry list will be posted on the official event website: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.

Gates open at Penn Can Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. The driver's meeting is set for 6:45 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m. The first green flag waves at 7:30 p.m. Grandstand admission is $22 for Adults and $20 for Seniors and Students. Kids 12 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $35 (no license required).

The 'King of the Can' has been the signature Penn Can event since 1999 when Weaver of Windsor, N.Y., took the inaugural victory.

New for 2011, a number of contingency awards will be distributed from companies including American Racer/Lias Tire, BFP Specialty, Shiley Fabrication and more. Lap money will also be collected at $20 per lap. A Hard Charger Award, Hard Luck Award and other bonuses will be announced as the event approaches.

Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa., won last year's 50-lap 'King of the Can' event.

Joining the Modifieds on the Friday portion of the 'King of the Can' will be Crate (602) Sportsman ($1,000 to win) and Street Stocks in a $500-to-win event. The top-three Crate Sportsman earn the 13th, 14th and 15th starting positions, respectively, in the Saturday (Oct. 15) Race of Champions Sportsman event. The Street Stock winner starts seventh in the Trackside Products Street Stock Series event to be run on Saturday.

Sunday (Oct. 16) will now serve as the Friday rain date.

Saturday's program on Oct. 15 is comprised of RoC Sportsman, Late Models, Trackside Products Street Stocks, TSRS/CRSA Sprint Cars, Four Cylinders and Factory Stocks/Trucks.
