SHORT STORY
VONDOHREN WINS MODIFIED FEATURE, SCHUTZ GETS A GIFT IN LATE MODELS AND MANMILLER WINS PEPSI/BASHORE CHALLENGE

BECHTELSVILLE, PA July 31, 2011 . . . Six time NASCAR 358 Modified track champion Craig VonDohren was able to lead all the laps on his way to his third win of the season taking the victory in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. Chuck Schutz got a gift win in the Late Models when the first and second place cars tangled on the final lap giving him the lead and the win. And it was Doug Manmiller, needing only to win one of the one-on-one Pepsi/Bashore Trucking Challenge races, topping Ray Swinehart to pick up the $1500 first place money.
VonDohren had the rare opportunity to start on the pole as a result of the feature race of the 358 Modifieds not being a point race so he got lucky in the draw for starting positions. Throughout the 30-laps the veteran racer was able to lead and was able to hold off challenges due to restarts as a result of cautions. Second spot went to Meme DeSantis who was closing on the leader at the finish. Third place went to John Willman followed by Kevin Hirthler and Mike Gular.
In winning the 20-lap Late Model feature Schutz had to charge up through the pack, coming from 12starting spot to grab the lead on the final lap and earn the win. Leader Mike Kellner and challenger Danny Snyder tangled in the first turn on the final lap giving the lead to Schutz. Second spot went to Ron Kline followed by John Favinger, Kory Fleming and Andy Ressler.
Race of Champions Modifieds and Sportsman stock cars are featured in a doubleheader show on Wednesday, August 3, 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, August 6th the NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Late Models are in action along with the Vince’s Towing Old Timers Race, a 15 lap event, featuring old time modified owners.

FULL STORY
VONDOHREN LEADS ALL THE LAPS TO WIN MODIFIED FEATURE, SCHUTZ GETS A GIFT LATE MODEL WIN AND MANMILLER WINS PEPSI/BASHORE TRUCK CHALLENGE AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA July 31, 2011. . . Six time NASCAR 358 Modified Champion Craig VonDohren wheeled his Pioneer Pole Building/Felty Farms No.1c to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series 358 Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night notching his third win of the season. The 20-lap feature for Late Models was won by Chuck Schutz for his fifth win of the season at the wheel of the Jesse Baro Trucking/BPG Racing No.1 while Doug Manmiller topped ten others in the Pepsi/Bashore Trucking One-On-One Challenge earning him $1,500.
Many were surprised to see VonDohren pass up a big bucks event at another area speedway on Saturday to stay at his home track, Grandview, and it paid off for him as he earned $2,500 for his winning effort that saw him lead all the laps after starting on the pole in the Modified feature as a result of a draw for starting positions. The race was a non-point event for the 358 Modifieds so the victory did nothing to improve the six time champion’s standing in the points battle.
Challenge winner Doug Manmiller brought out the caution on the first lap when he hit the wall in the fourth turn. At the drop of the green VonDohren took command of the 28-car starting field. Five laps later Eric Biehn stopped in turn four bringing out the second caution of the feature. And it was just two laps later that Terry Meitzler and Kyle Follweiler tangled in turn two. Each time the caution came out VonDohren was able to hold on to the lead on the race restarts.
At 13 laps Jimmy Horton IV bounced off the wall in turn four bringing out a fourth caution. And at 17 laps a multi-car accident involving eight cars brought out a red flag stopping the race.
For the balance of the race VonDohren was able to hold on to the top spot holding off challenges from John Willman and in the final laps Meme DeSantis to take the win. The Boyertown racer had a comfortable lead at the finish. Second spot went to DeSantis (Temple) followed by John Willman (Birdsboro), Kevin Hirthler (Boyertown) and Mike Gular (Green Lane).
Kory Fleming went to the front at the drop of the green for the 20-lap Late Model feature and set the pace for six laps before young Mike Kellner, in search of his first win of the season, took the lead by storming under Fleming in the second turn.
Once in front Kellner, in the Power Washers No 57, held off a strong challenge from Danny Snyder right on up to the final lap. Going into turn one on the final lap Kellner, using the low groove to his advantage for much of the race, struck a infield marker tire causing him to bobble and that caught Snyder causing the first and second place racers to tangle giving the lead to Schutz.
At the finish it was Schutz (Pottstown) followed by Ron Kline (Salford), John Favinger (Birdsboro), Kory Fleming (Milford, NJ) and Andy Ressler (Bechtelsville) making his first start of the season.
“It was like Christmas in July,” said Schutz in victory lane as he described how he got the win. “It is better to be lucky than good. I just didn’t think we can catch the leaders and would have to settle for third.”
Schutz continues to be the Late Model point leader and is tops in the Division II Finalist NASCAR national standings which includes racers from about 60 tracks across the country.
The Pepsi/Bashore Trucking Challenge had the top 11 in the modified point standings (that were on hand) featuring in one lap one against one races that saw Doug Manmiller challenged by Ray Swinehart for the final challenge. Manmiller edged out Swinehart for the $1500 victory. Brad Missimer won the initial challenge with Kevin Albert able to get three wins. John Willman was twice a winner. Meme DeSantis won one. Swinehart took two. All but one win, that being one of Kevin Alibert’s, came for drivers getting the benefit of the inside starting spot.
Late Model qualifiers, eight laps, were won by Mike Kellner and Ron Kline. Qualifying events for the 358 Modifieds, 12 laps, were won by Terry Meitzler, Danny Erb, Craig VonDohren and Kevin Hirthler. Consolation racers for the Modifieds, 10 laps, Chris Gambler and Brad Missimer.
The Cargo Trailer Sales gift certificates went to 10th place feature finishers Nate Christman in the Modifieds and Bill Lightcap in the Late Models.
The Dan’s Deli Halfway Leader awards in each feature were presented to Mike Kellner in the Late Models and Craig VonDohren in the Modifieds.
The Salvage Transport Late Model Hard Charger award was earned by Chuck Schutz coming from 12th to 1st while Mike Kramer/Sponsors of Bobby Gunther Walsh Modified Hard Charger Award went to Nate Christman who started last and worked his way through the pack to gain a 10th place finish.
Christman’s Meat Market gave a $30 pit pass to John Giesler.
