BUCKWALTER LEADS QUARTET OF FIRST TIME KUTZTOWN WINNERS ON JULY 27

Kutztown, Pa. - July 27 - Sometimes, it pays to be patient...even on a small track, and in a relatively short race.
Tim Buckwalter was "patiently aggressive" on Wednesday night at the Kutztown Fair Speedway, and his patience paid off as the Douglassville resident notched the Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint victory at the fairgrounds.
Joining Buckwalter in the winner's circle were Tommy Kunsman Jr. (Winged 270cc Micros); Joe Nemeth (All Star Slingshots); and Ryan Kunkle (Xcel Sportsman Modifieds). All four drivers registered their initial triumphs of the season at the track that is nestled in the shadows of Kutztown University.
Racing returns to Kutztown in a big way on Wednesday, August 3rd, with the running of the NAPA Auto Parts Dutch Classic. The All Star Slingshots will be in the spotlight at the Dutch Classic as they compete in a Mid-Atlantic Silver Regional Tour event that will also award the National Slingshot Championship. The event sponsored by NAPA is also part of Slinger Speedweek, and the Slingshots will take part in time trials, two rounds of qualifying heats, and a 30-lap A-Main that pays $750 to the winner.
The Wingless 600cc and Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints are also on the NAPA Auto Parts Dutch Classic menu, along with the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds. Gates will open at 4 p.m. on August 3rd, with warm-ups at 6:30 and racing at 7:00.
Shane Lewis, trying for his second consecutive Wingless 600cc victory, set the pace for most of last Wednesday's 20-lap main event.
Buckwalter started on the outside of row one and ran second to Lewis, laid back during the first half of the race, then turned up the wick and charged to the leader's tail tank. Buckwalter patiently attacked, running the high side at both ends of the speedway while Lewis hugged the bottom in all four corners.
Finally, with four to go, Buckwalter shot to the inside on the front stretch, diving under Lewis as the lead duo set their cars for turn one. Buckwalter accelerated off the bottom of turn two as the new leader, going on to win by six-tenths of a second over Lewis, who has recorded two Kutztown triumphs so far this year.
Kyle Lick, Ryan Smith, and Brett Schoenly completed the top five. Point leader Jeff Hartman started deep in the pack and was involved in an early race skirmish, forcing him to restart from the rear of the field. He recovered to finish ninth.
In the main event for the Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints, Tommy Kunsman Jr. hustled from his pole position starting spot to lead all 20 laps and score the victory, but he had to hold off the defending track champion, the current point leader, and one of the speedway's winningest drivers to secure the triumph.
With Kunsman out front - by a comfortable margin - Ross Perchak was picking his way through the top five, landing in the runner-up spot just before the halfway signal was displayed. At the same time, current point leader and the previous week's feature winner, Richie Hartman, passed Tom Schearer for fourth. Hartman wrestled third away from Jarid Kunkle on lap 12, and 20th starting Ryan Smith entered the top five with seven circuits remaining to be run.
Kunsman kept Perchak at bay, leading the ace from Hazleton to the checkered flag by almost half a second. Hartman nipped Smith for third at the line, and Kunkle settled for fifth place money.
Joe Nemeth wired the All Star Slingshot field for his first Kutztown win, with Gary Hieber chasing him to the stripe.
Nemeth set the pace for the entire 20-lap distance, but the action behind him was hot and heavy. Gary Hieber, Simon Egan, Shannon Smith, Mike Glass, and point leader Brett Bieber waged an intense battle as Blandon's Matt Miller, in the runner-up slot, attempted to keep the leader in sight.
Hieber eventually broke away from the others and challenged Miller for second. Hieber grabbed the position from Miller with nine laps left to run, then tried in vain to reel in the race leader, Nemeth.
Nemeth romped to the checkered, with Hieber, Miller, Egan, and Shannon Smith rounding out the top five.
Fourteen of the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds took the green to begin their 20-lap feature race, as Paul Richards jumped to the early lead after a three-wide battle with Eric Whitby and Ryan Kunkle.
With four laps scored, Kunkle snatched the top spot away from Richards as Chris Stockham, 12th starting Andy Ressler, Mark Schaffer, and Kevin Gruber - bidding for his third straight victory - took part in a crowd pleasing tussle for several laps.
Ressler passed Schaffer to claim fourth on the 12th trip around the oval, and three-time winner Matt Carman, who started 14th, moved into sixth on the same lap.
Kunkle, from Fleetwood, Pa. remained in front to earn his first victory of Kutztown's 2011 season. Stockham ended up second, with Ressler finishing third. Schaffer and Ray Horning finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Fairgrounds Fodder...
Scary incident during the Xcel Sportsman Modified feature when the car driven by Josh Fox suffered mechanical problems and caught fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and Fox climbed from the car under his own power, uninjured.
Austrailian 410 Sprint Car driver Luke Bowey, from the city of Adelaide in the land down under, picked up a ride in the Funk No. 97 at Kutztown on Wednesday. Bowey and his family are visiting the Keystone State so that he can run the big Sprinters, but on Wednesday he was given the chance to drive a winged 270cc Micro-Sprint. Unfortunately, mechanical issues knocked him out of his heat race and the consolation.
Car count for July 27: Wingless 600cc Micros = 31; Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints = 27; All Star Slingshots = 18; Xcel Sportsman Modifieds = 14. The grand total was 90 racecars on Wednesday evening.
Drivers winning qualifying heats on Wednesday included: Kyle Lick, Tim Buckwalter, and Shane Lewis in the Wingless 600cc class; Austin Bishop, Richie Hartman, and Brad Tabertshofer in the 270cc Micros; Travis Bieber and Taylor Schoenly captured the two All Star Slingshot heats; and Eric Whitby and Paul Richards were victorious in the twin heats for the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds.
Last chance consolation races went to Dave Graziano (Wingless 600's) and Luke Kroboth (270cc).
The annual Kutztown Fair is looming in just three weeks, and the Micro-Sprint Fair Week Nationals take center stage on Tuesday, August 16 and Wednesday, August 17. Qualifying will be held on Tuesday, with last chance races and the A-Mains for the Wingless 600's and Winged 270's set for Wednesday. The Fair Week Nationals are presented by UGI HVAC and RTS Chassis. Associate sponsorships are still available...contact Kutztown race organizers Kerry Meitzler (610-683-8234) or Janelle Stump (racektown@aol.com) for details.
Thursday, August 18 will bring down the curtain on the 2011 racing season at the fairgrounds. Those attending the Kutztown Fair that night will see the Xcel 600 Modified Tour and the Xcel Sportsman Mods in action on the fifth-mile of clay. A special Celebrity Race is being planned by Xcel Modified creator Doug Borger as part of the August 18 agenda. Drivers who compete in the 358 Modified and Late Model divisions will buckle into the Xcel Modifieds for the Celebrity event.
