PAUCH, WILSON, AND RUMMEL EACH EARN REPEAT NEETS VICTORIES…By Gary Lileck
Bechtelsville, PA – July 24, 2011 – The fourth annual Granduro took place this past Sunday afternoon at the Grandview Speedway, and three drivers each made a return visit to the winner’s circle. Tim Pauch of Stockton NJ won the Big Car 150-lap Enduro while Steve Wilson of Green Lane PA dominated the 150-lap Small Car race. Linsey Rummel of Parkerford PA won the 10-lap Ladies Race.
The Big Car event found second generation talent Chuck Eckert leading the opening lap before former Modified racer Bryan Yelk took the top spot on lap two. Eckert regained the lead with five laps showing on the counter, and Joel Pilgert was next in line to take the number one position on lap nine. Pilgert set the pace until the 31st circuit when Pat Hires (who started 10th) powered into the race lead.
Hires put together a solid effort until his machine began to fall from the pace just before the event’s half-way point. Veteran racer Carl Ruppert sailed into the lead on lap 70 and it was his turn to show the dominant hand. As the event progressed, Ruppert’s machine began to trail smoke and his machine took time to re-fire on a lap 102 restart. Pauch, who was one lap down to the leader, worked back onto the lead lap and claimed the top position on the 106th lap, when Ruppert retired to the pit area.
Pauch, the brother of legendary dirt modified racer Billy Pauch Sr., led the event’s remaining laps unchallenged and cruised to victory lane for his second win of the season. Pauch enjoyed a full lap advantage over his competition by race’s end.
Brandon Guyer, a 20-year old racer from Ivyland PA, enjoyed a season’s best finish of second as he held off the strong challenges from veteran racer Howie Bott of Budd Lake NJ. Pilgert (Boyertown PA) turned in his best performance of the season for fourth. Teenaged racer Kyle Killian (Schuylkill Haven) made his first Grandview start of the season and finished in the fifth spot.
Jeff Levan, in only his second ’11 start, led the opening three laps of the Small Car Enduro until Bryan Yelk powered into the lead via the outside lane of lap four. When Yelk’s car slowed on lap 10, Rob Pyle (who started 14th) took control of the race lead. Pyle led until lap 30 when his car retreated to the pits and Wilson (who started 19th) took the top spot.
Wilson simply dominated the contest’s remaining laps and enjoyed a healthy four-lap lead over his competition. He drove to his second NEETS victory and fourth overall win of the season. Wilson, who is a crew member on the Jeff Strunk driven #357 Modified at Grandview, was joined by Strunk in the winner’s circle.
Larry Spencer III (Nanticoke PA) ran within the top five during the entire event and finished in the runner-up spot for his best finish of the season. Despite showing smoke in the end, Don Daigneault (Earlville PA) nursed his machine to a third place effort. Pete Wharton (Bally PA) started 23rd and matched his season’s best of fourth. Ken Wallace (Woodlyn PA) made some late race maneuvers into the fifth spot.
Rummel led the entire Ladies Race and drove to a convincing nine second margin of victory over second place Jen Schwager (Bechtelsville).
NEETS NOTES: Despite the afternoon’s hot temperatures, both Pat Hires and Bryan Yelk drove double duty on the day. Hires was actually working to the front in the four cylinder race after starting last but eventually struggled with mechanical issues…
As mentioned second generation racer Kyle Killian made his first Grandview start of the season in the Russ Killian owned #17K. The young racer only had a few previous G’view starts last year aboard a four cylinder. Ralph Boger Jr. also made his first 2011 start in the #05 machine. Boger, a former Roadrunner driver in the 90s, made his return to the sport after a few years away. Another new entrant in the Big Cars was Cuck Keely aboard a #707 machine…
Phil Reed, who raced a part-time schedule last year, made his first Four Cylinder event of the year. Reed was strong all day despite having to pit on three occasions (two flat tires and one missing tire). Reed still managed to place in 11th at the end. Dave Bentley Sr., who has been active in the sport for over 25 years, made his first start of the season in his traditional #73 car. Bentley was running in second until his machine retired to the pit area with mechanical problems…
Competitors raced on a very good surface during the afternoon’s course as 310 total laps were turned on the 1/3 mile dirt oval speedway…
