Billet Beats Opponents and Rain to Win the Late Model Feature at SSP on Saturday Night

Newberrytown, PA (June 4, 2011) – On Saturday night, June 4, Carlisle’s Carl Billet held off many challengers to win the weather-shortened 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. The Street Stocks, Xtreme Stocks, Road Warriors and Legends Cars feature events were postponed to a later date.

Before racing action began, many drivers and fans paid tribute to Mike Zeigler Sr. with his recent passing on Monday. His two sons, Mike Jr. and Cam as well as his daughter-in-law, Jaynee took special hot laps to pay tribute to their loss of their father.

Just as the Late Model feature race began to lineup on the track, speedway management decided to send everyone back to their pits and evacuate the grandstands when a severe thunderstorm neared the speedway. Violent lightning and thunder filled the skies. After a 30 minute delay, the drivers were called back to the speedway to begin the race.

When the race started, Carl Billet took the lead immediately from inside the second row. Charles Potts quickly fell into the runner-up spot behind Billet. A caution flag on lap 2 fell when a multi-car accident occurred in turn 1 & 2. On the restart, Gene Knaub moved into the third spot behind Potts, all the way from his 8^th place starting position. Throughout the next 10 laps, last week’s feature winner Randy Christine Jr. was able to get by Knaub to claim third spot. Lightning once again began to fill the skies as the caution fell once again on lap 13. On the restart, a wild battle for the lead found Grant Adams spinning with nowhere to go and bringing out the yellow flag once again. As raindrops began to fall, officials were forced to remove the cars from the track. A steadier rain continued, forcing official to declare the race official after 13 laps were completed. Carl Billet took the win with Charles Potts in second place. Randy Christine Jr. and Gene Knaub finished third and fourth respectively. The hard charger of the event was Cam Zeigler who won the consolation event, started 21^st and finished in 5^th place after just 13 laps. Heat race wins went to Jason Rochelle, Larry Baer, Christine and Knaub.

The 20-lap Street Stock and 15-lap Road Warrior features will be made up on Saturday, June 11. The 20-lap Xtreme Stock and 15-lap Legends Cars feature events will be on Satruday, June 18.

Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midgets, karts, Adult Speedcars and lawnmower racing action.

Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday & Sunday nights, June 11 & 12. Saturday night will be the Silver Spring Speedway Racer Reunion featuring the Late Models, Street Stocks, Road Warriors, PENNMAR Vintage Cars and a special appearance of the Super Sportsman Tour. Sunday night with be the Spring Car Summer Classic featuring the 358 Sprint Cars, ARDC wingless midgets and an EMMR vintage car exhibition both on and off the track. Sunday night will also be the York County racing Club night where all members will receive $2.00 off grandstand admission with a club card. The start time is 7:00 p.m. for racing action on Saturday night and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday night.

The Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune is on June 15

The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval. The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class. Each session will be 6 – 8 laps per session. The grandstands are open free to the public. Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits. The fuel pumps from Miller’s Racing Parts will not be open. Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller’s Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181. The main concession stand will be open throughout the night.

Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and “cold pit” areas. All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the “Big Track.”
