KUTZTOWN PRO SERIES WIN TO RYAN SMITH; EDGAR, GLASS, AND CARMAN ALSO VICTORIOUS

Kutztown, Pa. - June 15 - A total of 120 racecars crammed the Kutztown Fair Speedway pit area on Wednesday night, with the spotlight squarely centered on the Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints as the 600 Pro Series Tour invaded the fairgrounds.
When the checkered flag waved to end the fast paced 30-lap Pro Series main event, Ryan Smith, Kunkletown, was the victor. Smith held off a late race rally by Jeff Hartman to secure the triumph, as Hartman - who came into the event on a two race winning streak at Kutztown - put a scare into the eventual winner on a restart with four to go.
Hartman tried high and low, often drawing alongside Smith's Moose's LZ Bar & Grille/ Pace Chassis No. 22. But Smith fought off each challenge, finally zipping under the black-and-white cloth to register the victory by a quarter of a second.
Hartman settled for second, with Shane Lewis, Jay Hartman, and Brett Schoenly completing the top five.
Lehighton's Brandon Edgar led wire to wire to record the triumph in the 20-lap feature for the winged 270cc Micro-Sprints.
Edgar shot from his pole position start to hold the early lead, as Ross Perchak (started ninth) and Ryan Smith (started 13th) sliced their way through traffic.
Perchak muscled his way past Josh Pepe for second on the seventh circuit, then tried in vain to run down the leader.
Smith slowly but steadily clawed past Pepe for third with only five laps remaining.
Edgar, the teenager in the Ahner Furniture No. 57, maintained his composure and held on to notch the first Kutztown victory of his career. Perchak finished second, with Smith, Pepe, and 22nd starting Richie Hartman rounding out the first five.
Ever since his wife, Kim, brought baby Kayla into the world, Mike Glass has been unstoppable on the one-fifth mile Kutztown oval. On Wednesday, Glass captured his second consecutive All Star Slingshot win, beating Matt Massone to the stripe by the healthy margin of 1.216 seconds.
Glass took the green from the outside of the front row, beat polesitter Billy Shepps into the first turn, and never looked back.
Massone chased Glass to the checkered, with Travis Bieber dialing up some late race dramatics to finish third. Gary Hieber and Brett Bieber (Travis' brother) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the Xcel Sportsman Modified feature, Matt Carman outgunned pole man Ryan Kunkle to take the early lead. Carman would go on to win his third of the season, beating Kunkle to the line by more than three seconds.
A terrific pack diced for third in the early going, with Josh Fox, Kyle Kocher, Andy Ressler, Chad Mullen, and Scott Washburn all dueling for the position. One lap past the halfway mark, Ressler, the current Xcel Sportsman point leader at Kutztown, spun in turn two.
On the restart, as Carman motored away, the battle for third resumed with Fox eventually taking control of third spot.
Carman won handily, with Kunkle turning in a well deserved runner-up finish. Fox, Washburn, and Doug Borger completed the top five.
Fairgrounds Fodder...
With the 600 Pro Series Tour in town, the wingless division pulled in a field of 41 cars. The Winged 270cc Micros had a 40-car field, and there were 24 of the All Star Slingshots. The Xcel Sportsman Modifieds had 15 entries on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, June 22, the Junior Slingshot National Tour comes to Kutztown, along with the Wingless 600cc Micros, the Winged 270cc division, and the All Star Slingshots. The Xcel Sportsman Modifieds will have the night off on Wednesday.
There will not be any racing at the fairgrounds on June 29 and July 6, due to the Kutztown Folk Festival which is held annually at the fairgrounds. Racing resumes on Wednesday, July 13.
