Ehrhart Repeats and Thunberg Scores Feature Wins at SSP Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (August 7, 2010) - Dover’s Justin Ehrhart provided an encore of his patented backflip off the roof of his car in victory lane after winning the 20-lap Late Model feature event at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday night. Ehrhart picked up his second consecutive win. The Street Stock main event found Middletown’s Scott Thunberg claiming his first win of the season. Mike Zeigler Jr. of Spring Grove won the always exciting Xtreme Stock Car 20-lapper. Chistopher Holland picked up the Road Warrior feature win and Deanna Frye wired the field to win the special Speedway Auto Sale Women on Wheel Mini Van feature.
Justin Ehrhart grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap Late Model feature event over polesitter, Tommy Slanker. By the third circuit, Charles Potts moved into the runner-up spot behind Ehrhart. On lap 7, Slanker slowed coming out of the fourth turn and onto the frontstretch. Before Slanker could get out of harm’s way, a wild seven car melee ensued when the back half of the field scrambled behind him. On the restart, SSP Late Model point leader, Larry Baer began making his charge to the front, moving into third on lap 8 and then into the runner-up spot on lap 11. However, Potts battled back to reclaim the second spot two laps later. Lap 17 provided plenty of drama as Baer blasted past Potts and set up Ehrhart for the pass for the lead. However, Baer jumped the cushion and gave Ehrhart enough distance to keep the lead. One more caution on lap 19 set up a one lap shoot-out, but Ehrhart held strong to claim the victory over Baer and Potts. Jake Jones and Randy Christine Jr. rounded out the top five. Ehrhart, Potts and Randy Kissinger recorded the heat race victories.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature had outside front row starter Brian Hauenstein grabbing the early lead. Hauenstein dominate the first part of the feature until he encountered lapped traffic on the 8th circuit. Unfortunately a yellow flag and flat tire placed Hauenstein at the rear of the restart, relinquishing the lead to Jim Palm Jr. Palm looked to score his second consecutive win just like Ehrhart in the prior feature. However, Scott Thunberg extinguished those hopes when he got by Palm with two laps to go. The 2009 SSP Street Stock point champion claimed his first victory of the season over Palm. Current SSP point leader, Randy Zechman finished third. Jeremy Becker was scored fourth after George Eash failed post-race technical inspection. Brian Hauenstein made his way back to a fifth place finish. Heat races were claimed by Hauenstein and Doug Bennett.
Many race teams also participated in the Bike and Toy Giveaway on the “Picnic in the Pits” special night. Those donating bicycles for the giveaways included Kline’s Septic Services, Springetts Auto Sales, Jason Failor Racing, Credit Connection, Richards Racing #4, Chris Knopp Racing and George Eash Racing. Other teams that donated gift cars, gift bags and toys included Charles Potts, D.J. Groft, Cameron Benyou, John Moser Jr., Scott Thunberg, Gene Myers, Jake Jones, Brian Hauenstein, Matt Adams, Zac & Travis Beck, Randy Christine Jr. and Stephen Ramsey. Thank you goes out to all the drivers and teams who made this a special night for the kids.
Also, it was a special night for Christina Ellis who said “yes to marriage” to Xtreme Stock Car driver, Andrew Frye after he popped the question on the frontstretch after the Xtreme Stock feature event.
Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, August 13 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midget, kart, lawnmowers and Adult Speedcar racing action. This race is part of the 2010 Summer Shoot-Out Series. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
Racing action returns next weekend to the SSP Big Track on Saturday night, August 14 with the popular “Camera and Autograph” night. On the racing card will be the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, Legends Cars and Mini Vans. Racing begins at 7:00 p.m.

- Repeat Fan Discount Continues for 2010 – The popular “Repeat Fan Discount” program will continue at SSP in 2010. There is a $2.00 repeat fan discount for each person with a ticket stub from races during the previous week’s events completed only. Returning fans are encouraged to write their name, address and phone number on the back of the stub to be entered into special drawings during and at the end of the season for great prizes. The Repeat Fan Discount is not valid for pit pass purchases.
Swap Meet Added to the Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune on August 18
The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, August 18 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval. The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class. Each session will be 6 – 8 laps per session. The grandstands are open free to the public. Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits. The fuel pumps from Miller’s Racing Parts will not be open. Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller’s Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181. The main concession stand will be open throughout the night.
Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and “cold pit” areas. All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the “Big Track.”
There will also be a bi-weekly racing swap meet added to all Wednesday Night Test & Tunes scheduled for 2010 at SSP. The event is free to buy, sell or look. All sellers will set up in the parking lot across the street from the speedway. The times are from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Any racing related items may be sold new or used from go karts/quarter midgets to full-size racecars and everything in between. This will give teas a chance to raise money by getting rid of equipment not needed and give other teams a chance to search for those items needed to stay on the track in 2010. Cars, engines, parts and trailers may be available.
