Jeff Hartman Wins Wild Four-Car Battle For 600cc Triumph; Ryan Smith & Ross Perchak (270cc), Cody Kline (Slingshot) and Louden Reimert (Junior Slingshot) Also Score Victories At Kutztown
KUTZTOWN, PA - Jeff Hartman spent the early portions of Wednesday's 20-lap wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint feature at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway lurking in fourth position.
He ended up in Victory Lane.
Hartman, of Flagtown, N.J., returned to the winner's circle at the one-fifth-mile clay oval in the shadows of Kutztown University following an intense lead battle at the outset of the wingless main. Brett Arndt, on the pole for the event via a 10-car invert, quickly took the top spot in the Greth Racing No. 71, with inside-running Shane Lewis and Ryan Smith, building momentum on the outside groove, in pursuit.
Points leader Hartman, coming from seventh, joined the leaders by lap four.
The race took a dramatic turn on lap seven exiting turn two. Lewis drove to the inside of Arndt, while Smith worked the high lane. Running three wide, Lewis clipped an inside marker tire and flipped end-over-end on the backstretch, prompting a red flag. Lewis was uninjured.
Two laps after the restart, Hartman used the inner hub to work by Smith for second and race-leading Arndt. Smith followed into the runner-up spot on the 14th circuit but couldn't unseat Hartman out front despite two restarts in the final circuits.
Smith, Arndt, 10th-starter Tim Buckwalter and Slingshot graduate Kyle Lick trailed.
Jesse Hartman was the 600Scene.com Hard Charger, advancing from 24th to finish seventh in the feature.
In the heldover 20-lap 270cc Micro-Sprint feature from July 21, a caution-free event, Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., unseated Ross Perchak in lapped traffic on lap 12 and marched to victory. Perchak was second, followed by Darin Bartholomew, Richie Hartman and Matt McAnally.
Hazleton, Pa.'s Perchak returned the favor on Smith in the 20-lap nightcap 270cc event. Perchak drove by Tom Kunsman Jr. on lap 12 and held off Smith's advances. Smith chased Perchak for the final six laps. Richie Hartman completed his night with two top-five finishes, placing third. Kunsman Jr. and Jay Hartman were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Invading Cody Kline of Bangor, Pa., won the 20-lap Slingshot feature. Kline trailed pole starter Gary Hieber for 15 laps before using slower traffic to his advantage. Kline slid to the inside of Hieber with four laps remaining and drove on to the win. Hieber, Shannon Smith, Brad Arnold and Marc Daniels rounded out the top five.
Third-generation driver Louden Reimert of Oley, Pa., won his first Junior Slingshot 20-lap feature after an intense battle with A.J. Gerhart. Reimert, whose father Shawn is a current Modified racer at Grandview (Pa.) Speedway and grandfather Terry was a longtime racer, paced 17 laps before Gerhart took command. Reimert drove back to the inside of Gerhart with two laps remaining, regained the lead in turn two, and drove on to the win. Chris Kurtz, Gerhart, Jacob Dunn and T.J. Lilly followed.
Racing resumes next Wednesday (Aug. 11) with a full program of wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots and Junior Slingshots plus the heldover 20-lap Junior Slingshot feature from July 21. It will be Championship Night, with 2010 track champions decided in all divisions.
Gates open weekly at 4 p.m., with practice at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission for 2010 is as follows: Adults -$8; Students (10-17)/Seniors/Kutztown Residents with ID - $5; Kids under 10 - FREE. Pit admission is $20 (no membership required) and car registration is $20.

Ryan Smith's two second-place efforts and 270cc victory came one day after the versatile racer made his debut with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Tuesday night at Fulton (N.Y.) Speedway....
