Brett Michalski (600cc) Wins First Of 2010 At Kutztown; Ryan Smith (270cc), Brett Bieber (Slingshot) and Franklin Heinzmann (Young Gun 390) Also Post Wednesday Victories

KUTZTOWN, PA - Brett Michalski won his first of the season in dramatic fashion.

Michalski repelled the advances of Jeff Hartman to win the 600cc wingless Micro-Sprint 20-lap headliner Wednesday night at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway. The Penndel, Pa., driver survived a restart one lap to the finish to post the triumph at the one-fifth-mile clay oval in the shadows of Kutztown University.

There will be no racing at Kutztown June 30 and July 7, the next two Wednesdays, due to the PA German Festival held on the fairgrounds property. The action resumes on July 14 and runs through the annual Kutztown Fair Races Aug. 17-19.

Michalski, 15, charged from eighth starting spot to the lead just moments after a lap-six restart, passing pole starter Doug Snyder. Meanwhile, Delran, N.J.'s Jeff Hartman was quietly moving toward the front. Hartman cracked the top three by lap 11, took second on the 12th circuit and began to run down Michalski.

Hartman pressured Michalski over the final six laps, nearly pulling even on lap 18. A caution on lap 19 provided Hartman with a final opportunity, but Michalski drove on to the win by 0.219 seconds. Hartman, Snyder, Tim Buckwalter and ninth-starter Brett Arndt completed the front five.

Michalski was the 600Scene.com Hard Charger.

Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., led from start to finish in the 20-lap 270cc Micro-Sprint event. Smith started from the pole via a four-car invert following the heat events and was never challenged, negotiating lapped traffic flawlessly for his third 270cc win at Kutztown this season.

Billy Murphy was a season-high second, followed by Jon Pepe, Matt McAnally and 10th-starter Ross Perchak, who ran the final circuits with a glowing left-rear wheel assembly. McAnally slid by Perchak on the last lap.

Brett Bieber of Oley, Pa., used an outside-pole starting spot to lead the entire 20-lap Slingshot feature for his first of the season. Jan Acker was second after starting sixth. Acker passed Mike Glass on the final circuit for the runner-up spot. Glass, Shannon Smith and Travis Bieber trailed.

Franklin Heinzmann of Frederick, Md., started last and won the 20-lap Young Gun 390 Junior Sprint event. Sean Case took second.

Racing resumes Wednesday, July 14 with the HTMA 600 Pro Series (rain date: July 21), 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots and Young Gun 390 Sprints. There is no racing at Kutztown June 30 and July 7 due to the PA German Festival being held on the fairgrounds property.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with practice at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission for 2010 is as follows: Adults -$8; Students (10-17)/Seniors/Kutztown Residents with ID - $5; Kids under 10 - FREE. Pit admission is $20 (no membership required) and car registration is $20.
