Brett Arndt (600cc), Ryan Smith (270cc), James Fulper Jr. (Slingshot) and Chris Kurtz (Junior Slingshot) Visit Victory Lane Wednesday At Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, PA - Brett Arndt is back.

Arndt, a former track champion from Topton, Pa., has returned to weekly racing at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway in 2010 driving for Barry Greth. It took just two weeks for the 'Topton Tornado' to reach Victory Lane. Arndt led from start to finish in Wednesday night's 20-lap wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint feature at the one-fifth-mile oval in the shadows of Kutztown University.

By virtue of the post-qualifying invert, Arndt - now a regular with the touring ARDC Midget group - started from the pole in the Greth No. 71.

Despite a handful of yellow flags, Arndt was never seriously pressured en route to his first victory of the season.

Ryan Smith, who started fourth, drove into second place on lap 13 and chased Arndt to the flag. Jerry Schott Jr. fought off the advances of Brian Carber for third, while 12th-starter Carber crossed the line fourth and Kyle Reinhardt recovered from an early spin for fourth.

Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., won a 20-lap thriller in 270cc Micro-Sprint competition. With only one caution flag slowing the race's pace, pole starter Matt McAnally caught slower traffic prior to the halfway mark. Smith, meanwhile, was moving forward from sixth starting spot.

Running in the midst of the back markers, Smith drove by Richie Hartman for second on lap 10 and set out after McAnally's No. 45. Smith edged into the lead at the line for lap 15, but McAnally countered with an inside move entering turn one.

All told, the top spot swapped on three occasions before Smith took over for good on lap 16. Hartman worked by McAnally on lap 17, posting his second straight runner-up effort in the RTS Chassis No. 2. McAnally was third, followed by Jay Hartman (up from 12th) and John Pepe.

James Fulper Jr. of Milford, N.J., led from start to finish in the 20-lap Slingshot main event to win over 'Kid Kutztown' Jordan Henn. Mike Glass had surged forward from eighth spot to challenge the leader before sliding to the infield with four laps remaining. Trailing Fulper and Henn were Brett Bieber, Travis Bieber and Goldie Meitzler Memorial winner Shannon Smith.

Chris Kurtz of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was the 20-lap Junior Slingshot victor. T.J. Lilly chased Kurtz down from a straightaway back, but ran out of time to challenge, placing second. Clint Miller, Joseph Infante and Dylan Martin were third through fifth, respectively.

Racing resumes at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway next Wednesday (May 26) with wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots running in a touring series event and Junior Slingshots in competition.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with practice at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission for 2010 is as follows: Adults -$8; Students (10-17)/Seniors/Kutztown Residents with ID - $5; Kids under 10 - FREE. Pit admission is $20 (no membership required) and car registration is $20.

FAIRGROUNDS FODDER: Car counts for the second week of the 2010 season at Kutztown increased to 25 wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 36 270cc Micro-Sprints, 16 Slingshots and nine Junior Slingshots for a total of 86 entries....

The program spun off efficiently with the final checkered flying at 9:10 p.m. A good crowd took in the action from the track's grandstands....

Heat winners were Ryan Smith, Ryan Stillwaggon and Jerry Schott Jr. (wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint); Ryan Smith, Charlie Stone Jr., John Pepe and J.J. Uliana (270cc Micro-Sprint); Jan Acker and Matt Miller (Slingshot); and Joseph Infante (Junior Slingshot). Harlee Schaffer and Brad Tabertshofer split the 270cc consolations....

Look for Arndt to enter as many Micro-Sprint events as possible this season with the Greth Racing No. 71 when his ARDC Midget schedule allows....

Mike Feltenberger of Speedway Entertainment filled in as the pit steward for the night....

Jeff Hartman, the Goldie Meitzer Memorial wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint winner on Opening Night, suffered through a tough Wednesday. Hartman had driven into the top five before spinning in turn three on lap seven. After two additional incidents, Hartman called it a night....

Young Trevor Kobylarz also rode out a night he would like to forget. Spun on three separate occasions during qualifying (heat and consolation), the Birdsboro, Pa., teenager was unable to put his No. 05 into the 270cc feature....
