Stewart Friesen and Jerry Higbie Jr. Take Aim At Penn Can 'Clash at the Can' Event; Round One Of 'Super Summer Series' Set For Tuesday, June 8

SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Talented drivers from across the Northeast are stating their intentions to compete in the 'Clash at the Can' coming up on Tuesday night, June 8 at Penn Can Speedway.

Stewart Friesen, a native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., who currently resides in Old Forge, N.Y., and Jerry Higbie Jr. of Newburgh, N.Y., two drivers who have excelled already in 2010, have set plans to be part of the field at the Susquehanna, Pa., clay oval for the highly-anticipated event.

The 'Clash at the Can' is one half of the Modified 'Super Summer Series' at Penn Can. The second event, dubbed the 'Hot Summer Night' will take place on Tuesday night, Aug. 10. The 'Super Summer Series' is a mini-series within the nine-race Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour. The top point earner from the 'Super Summer Series' will receive $1,000 cash, while drivers making both events will be eligible for contingency awards. The series is co-promoted by Brett Deyo and Penn Can's management team of Reed Miller and Al Wilcox.

Both RoC-sanctioned big-block/small-block Modified events in the series are 60 laps paying $4,000 to the victor. Should the race winner post the optional $20 "gambler's fee," the win will be worth $5,000.

Gates for the 'Clash at the Can' event will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m. A rain date of June 9 has been established for the event.

Friesen has recorded a pair of Modified victories already this season at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y., just 20 minutes to the north of Penn Can. Friesen will enter the 'Clash at the Can' driving the powerful No. 1 Teo-Pro car small-block fielded by Tad Parks.

The outgoing young driver - a winner at Florida's Volusia Speedway Park this past February - looks to post his first-ever win at the Can. Friesen's prior best at the track was a second-place effort to Pat Ward in a RoC-sanctioned event in 2008.

Higbie, meanwhile, heads to Penn Can as the master of his domain. The 'Statesman' was the Accord (N.Y.) Speedway champion last season, while tying Chuck McKee in the fight for the Orange County (N.Y.) Speedway big-block Modified championship.

Higbie returned to his position on top of the southeastern New York racing season, leading the points at both Accord and Orange County early in 2010.

Both Friesen and Higbie have previously won Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour-sanctioned events.

The phone has been buzzing at the BD Motorsports Media office with drivers interested in the June 8 event. Among those expected to attend are Brett Hearn, Pat Ward, Jeff Strunk, Rick Laubach, Mitch Gibbs, Mike Gular, Brian Weaver, Jim Gabriel Jr. and many more.

Complete event rules and specifics for the 'Super Summer Series' have been posted on the web at http://www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com/.

Notable rules for the event are as follows:

*Tire Information:

Front tire options - American Racer SD 33 or harder

Left-rear options - American Racer SD 33, 38 or 44

Right-rear options - American Racer SD 38, 44, 48 or 50

*General Race Rules:

The standard for engine, body, chassis and safety specs are based upon '04 DIRT rules. Sail panels are permitted for this event. Sail panels will be measured from the ground to the highest point and should be no higher than 65 inches. Sail panels must mirror size and shape side-for-side.

*Weight Information:

Small-Block under 361 c.i., on gas or methanol, with maximum 750 cfm carburetor: 2,400 lbs.

Big-Block or Small-Block over 361 c.i., gasoline only: 2,500 lbs.

Small-Blocks running SB2 heads must weigh Big-Block weight!

Entry forms have been posted on the web. Drivers entering prior to June 5 will receive a $5 discount. Joey Grammes of Lehighton, Pa., was the first official entrant. Grammes is a past RoC winner at Penn Can, having driven to Victory Lane in the 'King of the Can' race held Sept. 15, 2006.

Penn Can's three-eighths-mile layout means money, fresh rubber and horsepower don't guarantee success, making the 'Super Summer Series' events favorable to low-dollar, weekly teams.

No conflicts on the dirt Modified calendar will allow the touring series stars and Pennsylvania/New Jersey teams to invade the facility. The makings of an all-star field are in place.

Running under the RoC banner brings along the touring group's followers, as well. A field of 56 358-Modifieds and 64 big-block Mods took part in the recent RoC opening weekend at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway.

With a posted $28,000 point fund for the '10 RoC series and Lias Tire of Indiana, Pa., offering incentives for drivers running American Racer facilities via its rich $100,000 American Racer Cup, strong support is expected for the entire RoC circuit this summer.

Rain dates have been put into place for both events. Should the June 8 'Clash at the Can' fall to rain, it will be run on June 9. The Aug. 10 'Hot Summer Night' moves to Aug. 11 in the event of wet weather.

The '10 'Super Summer Series' is presented by Plant Food Company Inc., Don's Automotive Mall, Gary's U-Pull-It, Reading Plastic Fabricators, G&G Used Auto Parts, Puzo's Collision, Jim Young Race Photos and Trackside Products.

Sponsorship opportunities, including product and contingency awards, remain available for the 'Super Summer Series' at Penn Can.

About the 'Super Summer Series'

Special events promoter Brett Deyo has partnered with Penn Can Speedway co-promoters Reed Miller and Al Wilcox for a pair of 'Super Summer Series' midweek races at the Susquehanna, Pa., clay oval.

The first event, dubbed the 'Clash at the Can' is set for Tuesday night, June 8. The 60-lap big-block/small-block Modified race will offer a $4,000 top prize plus a $1,000 bonus should the winning driver take the $20 "Gambler's Fee" option. Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds and the RoC Street Stocks will serve as the support divisions.

The second race, assuming the 'Hot Summer Night' moniker, is scheduled for Tuesday night, Aug. 10 with a similar format: 60 laps, $4,000 to the winner plus an additional $1,000 should the winner post the "Gambler's Fee." The 'Late Model Challenge' will fill out the program.

Point standings will be tabulated for the 'Super Summer Series' races. The champion of the series will earn $1,000 with contingency awards presented to others. Drivers must attempt to qualify for both events to be eligible for awards.

Both Modified events will be points-paying races on the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour, running under RoC rules. The events will include fuel stops (if necessary) for cars running methanol. Sail panels will be permitted for 'Super Summer Series' RoC events.

Rain dates have been put into place for both events. Should the June 8 'Clash at the Can' fall to rain, it will be run on June 9. The Aug. 10 'Hot Summer Night' moves to Aug. 11 in the event of wet weather.
