IT'S TIME FOR THE 9TH ANNUAL FRIENDS OF MIKE EVENT

Big things are happening at the Bridgeport Speedway this week as the Logan Township facility prepares to present the 9th running of the Friends of Mike race on Sunday.

The race is named in honor of a very devoted race fan by the name of Mike Rogie.  When Rogie was diagnosed with cancer, Danny Serrano and several of his friends got together to plan a special night of racing in Mike's honor.  They raised additional funds for the pay-offs and hoped that their efforts would raise their friend's spirits while they gave back to the weekend warriors that provided the competition week in and week out.  Unfortunatley, the night's guest of honor never paid it to the race.  Mike Rogie lost his battle to cancer on the day of the very first Friend's of Mike event.

Serrano, who is currently part of the Bridgeport Speedway Management team, has continued the race in his friend's honor ever since.  "The most important thing that remains, is the fact that life is precious, and we should always enjoy what we do and especially who we do it with," states event coordinator, Serrano.  "Mike was a great person and great friend...this race has become a race to give back to the drivers that give us pleasure week in and week out year after year, while at the same time remembering all of those that we loved that are no longer with us,” Serrano added.

Gates will open at 1pm on Sunday as there will be plenty of action even before the cars take to the track.

Eight teams of drivers will compete in three rounds of horseshoes, scheduled to begin at 3pm.  Sixteen drivers will be divided into eight teams.  The team of drivers that win the tournament will be awarded guaranteed starting spots in the sixty lap main event for the Big Block Modifieds.  The two winning drivers will draw for their starting positions along with the other drivers who race their way into the line-up.  Race fans are encouraged to attend and cheer on their favorites as Jimmy Horton, Ryan Watt, Richie Pratt, Jr., Rick Laubach, Wade Hendrickson and Rocco Infante as well as invaders, Jeff Strunk, Jimmy Blewett, Billy Pauch, Jr., Mike Mahaney, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Godown, Stewart Friesen and Neal Williams are all slated to compete in the tournament.

Another favorite among Friends of Mike attendees is the annual auction where all kinds of racing memorabilia will be awarded as prizes.  Fans may purchase tickets and then select what prizes they want to take a chance on.  Prizes will be drawn during intermission.

There will be live music, Moon Bounce and remote control cars for the kids.  Large, flat screen TVs will be set-up so that race fans can keep up with the NASCAR action at Dover as well as the latest football scores while they are enjoying the day's activities.  The Bridgeport Bandit will be on hand to welcome fans as well as Ms. Motorsports - Miss Cassi Pinder.  The Bandit bus will take race fans on trips through the pits throughout the night.

Racing gets underway at 6pm but don't miss any of the action during the day!

For the first time ever, this year's Friends of Mike will be a sanctioned event as the Race of Champions returns for a second event during the 2014 season.  The winner of the sixty lap feature event will win no less that $8,000 with more on the line for those competitors who elect to pay the gambler's fee.

The 811 Dig Safely Crate/Sportsman will also be featured in a twenty-five lap feature event with a  $1,200 pay day at the end.  The Crate/Sportsman drivers will also be eligible to pay a gambler's fee to increase their earnings.

The weekend gets started on Friday night when racing gets underway at 7:30 as the 600cc & 270cc Micro Sprints compete on the quarter mile track along with the 4 & 8 cylinder Enduros.  The Tri State Race Saver Sprints will be the fifth division to see action on Friday as they run their qualifying events and feature on the 5/8 mile track.
