Sportsman, Both Open& Crate 602, Play Key Role At Alpine Building Supply Short Track SuperNationals Presented By Olum’s 7 Oct. 10-11 At I-88 Speedway; American Racer Cup/Grandview Speedway Champion Jared Umbenhauer Official First Entrant
AFTON, NY – Again in 2014, the Sportsman division will play a key role in the Alpine Building Supply Short Track SuperNationals presented by Olum’s, run Friday-Saturday Oct. 10-11 at I-88 Speedway in Afton, N.Y. The seventh SuperNationals event makes its return to the neat-and-tidy Afton Fairgrounds facility where it was first run after an absence of eight years.
On Friday night (Oct. 10), the Open vs. Crate 602 Sportsman will headline the program with a 35-lap feature paying $1,500-plus to win and $125 to take the green flag. A number of bonuses and special incentives will be in place for the third appearance by the Sportsman at the SuperNationals event in its seven-race history.
Crate 602 Sportsman racing with the Open Sportsman racers on Friday night will be rewarded with hefty cash bonuses. The top-six Crate 602 Sportsman racers will receive $300, $200, $100, $75, $50 and a free Saturday pit pass.

All entries received prior to Oct. 1 will be entered into a drawing for two FREE pit passes valid for the Friday, Oct. 10 event.
The official first entrant for the Sportsman portion of the Short Track SuperNationals was 2014 Sportsman American Racer Cup and Grandview (Pa.) Speedway NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman champion Jared Umbenhauer of Richland, Pa.
Umbenhauer, a 22-year-old second-generation driver, won an astounding 13 Grandview Sportsman features during the season (11 point events, one Thunder on the Hill event and the Freedom 76 prelude). He has claimed the Sportsman championship in each of the three years the division has been run regularly on Saturday nights at the Berks County one-third-mile clay oval.
Umbenhauer earned a guaranteed Short Track SuperNationals Sportsman starting berth via his victory at Grandview in the 38-lap Sportsman event run Sept. 12, the night before the Freedom 76 original date.
In addition to his Barry Bashore-owned No. 5 Sportsman, Umbenhauer will also race in Saturday’s Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Modified portion of the SuperNationals at the controls of an Ed and Karen Nowotarski-owned Eastern Rigging No. 11 Modified.
On Saturday (Oct. 11), the Crate 602 Sportsman will be featured in a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win, $100-to-start special event. The Crate 602 Sportsman show will offer points toward the 2014 overall Dig Safely New York GRIT Series championship.

Also, any Open Sportsman competitors electing to attempt to qualify with the Modifieds on Saturday will receive a FREE car entry.
Friday’s (Oct. 10) lineup includes the Open vs. Crate 602 Sportsman 35-lap event, Street Stocks, IMCA-Modifieds, Four Cylinder Cars and Empire Sport Trucks plus open practice for Saturday’s divisions and a special Manmiller Electric Modified Dash of fast-timers from practice (winner earns redraw spot in Saturday’s main event).
On Saturday (Oct. 11), Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Modifieds race 50 laps paying $5,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $600 to start from the richest Short Track SuperNationals payout in history. Also, non-qualifiers in the Modified division will compete in a 17-lap B-Main paying $777 to the winner, $175 for 10th and $100 to take the green flag. Also on the Saturday docket are Crate 602 Sportsman, IMCA-Modifieds and Empire Lightning Sprints.
