RICK LAUBACH TAKES SECOND OF SEASON IN MODIFIEDS, WITMER DOUBLES HIS PLEASURE IN SPORTSMAN, BECKER IN ROADRUNNERS
MINERSVILLE, PA - August 10th, 2014
The Savage 61 Road Runner feature was first on the agenda and was led to the green by Joe Kavanaugh and Kris Ney for their 20 lap event. Kavanaugh would take the early lead and Tom Hablett would find himself right behind the leader. Jeremey Becker joined in on the action and on lap #3 he showed the way at the stripe, but Hablett would take it right back on lap #4. Becker would have a battle with Andrew Fayash III for the 2nd place spot, but Becker not only pulled away from Fayash, he also passed Hablett for the lead again on lap #9. Becker would never look back, but did have to deal with the pressure from Jim Kost. At the line it would be Becker taking home the win, followed by Jim Kost, Andrew Fayash III, Devin Trexler and Kris Ney. Shon Elk started in last spot, had worked his way up to a top 5 finish, but on the last lap, coming to the checker, he found himself in a tangle with Joey Brennan in turn #4 and would wind up with a 14th place finish. With the victory, Becker took over the points lead from Chris Holland with only two point races remaining.
The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 DIRTcar Modifieds saw Ray Swinehart take the early lead from his pole starting position. He would dominate the race until a caution period on lap #17. While under caution, Swinehart’s car came to a stop between turns 3 and 4 and he would need assistance getting his car off the track. Rick Laubach would assume the lead and led the field to the restart. He had Kevin Smith to deal with as Smith was trying everything he could to get past Laubach. All the while, Duane Howard and Meme Desantis were waiting in the wings to see if the front 2 would bobble and open the door for them to sneak up into the top positions. Laubach would hit his marks flawlessly and score the victory followed by Kevin Smith, Duane Howard, Meme Desantis and Colt Harris. Colt worked his way up from a 20th place starting spot to earn his 5th place finish. Billy Pauch Jr., who entered the night leading the points chase, had a rough night, finding himself involved in an early race accident. After going back and forth to pits pits several times for repairs, Pauch called it quits about mid-race and settled for a 15th place finish. Pauch's misfortune helped Rick Laubach and Duane Howard become the top two drivers in the point standings, as Pauch would fall to third. With only one points paying race remaining on August 22nd, just 69 points separate the top three drivers.
Wayne Witmer was able to score his 2nd win of the season in the USS Achey Sportman division Friday evening. He had to make all the right moves in order to keep Doug Hendricks and Craig Whitmoyer behind him, which was not an easy task to do. Both drivers challenged Witmer throughout the race in order to try to earn the win, but Witmer was not giving in to the pressure. On the last lap, Hendricks made his last attempt at the win and drag raced Witmer to the line, but Wayne would hold him off and be able to celebrate for the second time this season. Hendricks would finish second followed by Craig Whitmoyer, Kevin Beach and Tim Fitzpatrick. With only one points race remaining on the 22nd, just 33 points separate the top three drivers of Witmer, Fitzpatrick, and Hendricks.
Racing returns this coming Friday, August 15th, with the 2nd Annual Prelude To The Coal Cracker Event for the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar 358 Modifieds. This race is 30 laps for $4,000 to win and $400 to take the green. Twenty six cars will start the feature event. Last year 44 cars showed up for this event. All drivers will draw for heat starting spots and there will be a redraw for the feature event. Number of cars in the redraw will be determined by the number of heats we need to run. If we run three heats, the top four in each heat will redraw. If we run four heats, the top three in each heat will redraw. If we run five heats, the top two in each heat will redraw.
American Racer and Hoosier tires will be permitted for this event. THIS IS NOT A POINTS EVENT! Sail panels ARE NOT allowed.
Tim Buckwalter scored the "upset" victory in last years event. Could we see another new face in victory lane? Be there to find out.
Also on
the card will be the Slifko Fabrication Services Late Models in their final points event of the season, along with the Savage 61 Roadrunners.
Gates open at 5 PM, warm-ups are at 7:45 PM, and first heat hits the track at 8:15 PM sharp for what is sure to be a great night of racing.
