2013 CHAMPIONS OPEN 2014 SEASON WITH WINS

(Bridgeport Speedway, April 12, 2014)  2013 Bridgeport Big Block Modified Champion, Ryan Watt and Outlaw Stock Champion, Ron Frees picked up feature wins to open the 2014 Bridgeport Speedway racing season.

Watt, of Boyertown, PA, drew the outside pole to start the Spirit Dodge 25 lap Modified Feature, taking the lead as the green flag waved.  Polesitter, Jason Rivers faded through the line-up as Eric Kormann quickly moved his Hewlett #901 into second.  The race was on as 2012 Bridgeport Champion, Rick Laubach moved into third followed by Dominic Buffalino and Bob Sarkisian.  An electrical issue on the Benton Electric #7 would see Laubach pull off the track with just three laps scored as Richie Pratt, Jr. moved into the top five.

Watt immediately drove away from the field and had closed in on the back of the pack by the half way point in the race.  Kormann rode in second, making quick work of the lapped traffic.  Buffalino lost several positions when he needed to move out of the groove to negotiate a pass by a lapped car, allowing Sarkisian and Pratt to go by while Jimmy Horton moved into the top five.

The first twenty-two laps were completed without incident.  The first and only  caution flag was thrown for Jesse Hill who had been running sixth.  Hill spun after contact between turns one and two.  Several other cars spun to avoid contact.

With just three laps remaining, a single file restart had the field lined up nose to tail, erasing Watt's straightaway lead.  The 2013 Champion was the class of the field as Watt drove to his first win of the season in his Roberts Racing #14w.  Kormann's second place finish was a satisfying one after his night started out with mechanical problems with his #16s.  Pratt finished third in the Overhead Door #0 with Horton finishing 4th in the Lincoln Auto Body #5.  Buffalino rebounded for a fifth place finish in his Michaels #51m.

Travis Hill picked up where he left off on Opening Day 2013 by picking up the win in the 811 Call Before You Dig Crate/Sportsman Feature event. It wasn't an easy win for Hill.  Despite a pole position start, frequent cautions kept Hill's challengers in close range throughout the twenty lap main event.

Jesse Bonaduce quickly moved from his eighth place start to take over second on the first lap with Brad Roberts racing in third.  A four car tangle in turn four on lap five eliminated 2013 Champion, Mike Cogdill from competition.  While Hill and Bonaduce ran in first and second, Steve Searock took over third on lap five with Ricky DiEva and Gary Hieber in close pursuit.

The red flag was needed on lap ten for safety crews to attend to driver, Ryan Wozunk after heavy contact was made in turns one and two.  Wozunk was transferred to the hospital for treatment of a leg injury.

When racing resumed, Hill maintained his lead over Bonaduce as Hieber took over third.  The third through fifth positions were highly contested in the closing laps.

Hill drove to his first checkered flag of the season with Bonaduce finishing second.  DiEva raced his way into third at the checkered by a narrow margin over Searock.  Hieber completed the top five at the checkered flag.

2013 Outlaw Stock Champion, Ron Frees drove to his first win of the season in the Stewart Stainless Steel Outlaw Stock feature event.

= B  Frees, driving his own red Camaro #43, drove from his sixth place start to challenge race leader, Jeremy Doerr on lap five.  Frees used the outside lane on a lap six restart to power his way into the lead.  Doerr survived a challenge from Brian Ludwig to finish second.  Ludwig, Jack Beaumont and Tom Wills, Jr. followed Frees and Doerr across the finish line to complete their opening night feature event.

In the first D.A.'s Auto Body and Auto Service Rookie Feature of the season, Matthew Peck used an inside pass to take the lead with less than two laps to go to earn his first feature win of the season.  Peck had challenged race leader, David Crossman for the lead, trying the outside line.  When Crossman left the inside open on lap seven, Peck was ready as he moved his #39 into the lead.  Crossman finished second followed by Rich Becks, Jr., Matt Stern and Steve Deselyk.

The Bridgeport Speedway is preparing for the  Doug Hoffman Memorial 60 Over event to be held Easter Sunday.  The 44 lap Race of Champions feature for the Big Block Modifieds will highlight the first hand of the 2014 Poker Series event along with the Crate/Sportsman and Outlaw Stock s.  An Easter service will be followed by a helicopter Easter Egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny, starting at 4pm.  Racing action begins at 5:30pm.
