Bridgeport’s RoC Doug Hoffman Memorial Rescheduled for Easter Sunday-April 20
Bridgeport, NJ (March 29, 2014) – With steady rain already postponing Saturday's original date of Bridgeport Speedway's 2014 lid lifter, a 90% chance of wet weather predicted for Sunday's rain date has forced a second postponement of this much anticipated event. With weekly race tracks opening up next weekend and the next two Sundays already holding marquee modified events, it was all but impossible to find a non-conflicting date with surrounding area speedways. After long talks between Bridgeport Speedway and the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour the only date that remained was Sunday, April 20.
‘We had everything in place for this weekend. The fans, the cars, the atmosphere and promotions, you name it but we just could not control the weather,’ offered a disappointed track manager Danny Serrano. 'We looked at many options for a rain date trying to take in account many of the sanctioning bodies and track schedules,’ Serrano explained.
Keith Hoffman feels that this is a perfect opportunity to show and prove that short track racing is alive and well. 'I can't tell you how many times my brother Doug and I, and the whole crew and family would tow to a race on Easter Sunday. That's what we did because we were racers. I think if we give the racing community and option that Sunday, they'll want to come out and be with their friends and family at the race track. I really didn't want to lose this race honoring my brother and I know it might not be the ideal date for everyone but, I really hope people can come out and support this event."
'Anytime we can give our drivers a heads up with early cancellations, it's really appreciated,' offered Andy Harpell of the Race of Champions Modified Tour. 'We look forward to the make- up date and based on early indications of the series this will be an event that fans will want to be at.' The top 5 drivers in RoC points after Bridgeport's event on April 20 will each share in a $2,000 bonus. $400 will be awarded to each of the top 5 drivers in points following the Doug Hoffman Memorial.
Bridgeport Speedway has adjusted the starting times to allow families to keep their Easter morning and afternoon traditions. The plan is to present a family orientated Easter celebration while providing a safe, fun, and exciting program. Many of the promotions organized by Dave Adams (Moon Bounces for the kids, Bandit Bus Rides through the pits, Powerball, etc.) for the regularly scheduled 60over Special will remain while additional holiday promotions will be added. An appearance by the Easter Bunny, and an Easter Egg Hunt of magnanimous proportions, and a sermonette for all that would like to attend will take place on Sunday, April 20. The Modifieds, who were originally scheduled to run a 60-lap feature will now run 44-lap main event. 'Our goal is to have a manageable show on this day, plus that number was very significant in my brother's racing career. Doug won a lot of races driving the 44,' Hoffman added. The RoC Modifieds are also slated to be the first feature of the night.
An all-star studded field of modifieds was set to attend this weekend's Doug Hoffman Memorial. New York state hot shoes Matt Sheppard, Stuart Friesen, Jeff Heotzler, and Anthony Perrego were ready to leave the Garden State victorious, while Danny Johnson and J.R. Heffner were also making the long tow to Bridgeport. Pennsylvania stars Duane Howard, Frank Cozze and Craig VonDohren were representing the Keystone State. Meanwhile, Jamie Mills was slated to tow north from his home state of Delaware. New Egypt Speedway standouts Billy Pauch, Ryan Godown, Jimmy Blewett, Neal Williams, Sammy Piazza, and Rocco Infante were all looking forward to the first round of the 2014 Poker Series. Not to be outdone, Bridgeport Speedway was going to be well represented this weekend with the likes of '13 track champion Ryan Watt, '12 champion Rick Laubach, all-time winner Jimmy Horton, former track champions Wade Hendrickson and Mike Iles, Richie Pratt, Sam Martz, Matt Harrell, Eric Kormann, Dom Buffalino, Bob Sarkisian, last year's Poker Series Champion Rusty Smith, and a host of others.
The '811 Dig Safely' Crate/Sportsman will compete in a $1,000 to win 20-lap feature in Round #1 of their 2014 Poker Series. The 'Stuart Stainless' Outlaw Stock division will round out the racing card with the division's first ever 'Pete Ellis Lucky Teter/John Blewett Inc.' Poker Series $500 to win 20-lap event.
Pit gates will open at 1:30pm while Front gates will swing open at 3pm on Sunday, April 20. Hot laps begin at 4:30pm with racing scheduled to start at 5:30pm. Adult admission is $25, students 13-15 are $12, and children 12 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $35 no license required.
Due to the township's local ordinance of events held within a week's time period, Saturday's April 19 show will not be run. Details on any of the division's make-up events that were scheduled to race that Saturday will be forthcoming.
