With More Than $30,000 On The Line,
Diverse Field Taking Shape For Penn Can Speedway's Richest Night On Tuesday,
June 11; Teams Tame Aim At Lucrative Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels
'Clash at the Can'
SUSQUEHANNA, PA - A diverse Modified field is taking
shape for Penn Can Speedway's richest night ever - the Pioneer Pole Buildings
Inc.-VP Racing Fuels 'Clash at the Can' on Tuesday, June 11 (rain date:
Wednesday, June 12).
With more than $30,000 on the line
- including $500 just to take the green flag in the 60-lap Race of Champions
Dirt Modified Tour main event - an impressive cast of big-block/small-block
Modifieds will descend upon the one-third-mile oval on the Keystone State side
of the New York/Pennsylvania border.
An historic purse is in place
thanks to the marketing assistance of Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., VP Racing
Fuels, Sharkey's Fuels and Husqvarna. All eyes in the dirt Modified community
will be on Penn Can June 11!
The "non-top-heavy" payout rewards
the winner with a minimum of $5,000 (plus lap money and bonuses), with $1,500
offered for fifth place and $1,000 reserved for the 10th-place finisher in the
fourth annual event co-promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC and
Penn Can managers Reed Miller and Al
Wilcox.
Additionally, the first six drivers
failing to make the field via a consolation will transfer into the first
Trackside Products 'Dash into the Clash' 6 1/2-lap Last Chance Qualifier. The 'Dash into the Clash' victor can either
take $650 cash or the last starting spot in the main, paying $500 green money.
All other 'Dash into the Clash' participants earn
$50.
A long list of bonuses and special
awards has pressed the night's take to more
than $30,000 for Modified
teams!
The open-wheel doubleheader program
includes a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win feature for the 602 Crate Sportsman
drivers.
Recently announcing his intentions
to compete in the event - his first-ever Penn Can visit - is Australian Peter Britten, who will drive the
locally owned Mike Marold Jr. Troyer car. The Honesdale, Pa., Marold team will
renumber the car to '7a' for Britten's native Australia.
Britten, 25 years old, races
regularly at Albany-Saratoga (N.Y.) Speedway, Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports
Park and chases Super DIRTcar Series points across the Northeast and Canada. He
turned heads last season on live national television, contending for victory in
the World Finals in Charlotte, N.C.
The driver quite possibly making
the longest tow to Penn Can is Brad
Trice of Parsonsburg, Md. The Delaware International Speedway regular - who
recently purchased a C.C. Performance small-block engine - is set for his Penn
Can debut. Trice is a frequent winner at Charlie Cathell's fast half-mile in the
First State.
All three previous 'Clash at the
Can' winners are expected to be on hand. Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., who won the
inaugural event in 2010, will pilot the Glenn Hyneman-owned No. 126 Teo-Pro car.
Billy Decker (Unadilla, N.Y. - '11
winner) and Danny Johnson
(Rochester, N.Y. -'12 winner) have also set plans to
attend.
Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, N.Y., leads the
RoC point standings into Penn Can. The '05 RoC Dirt co-champion will strap into
Tom Umbenhauer's No. 19 for the 'Clash' event. He has shown previous success
with the Pennsylvania-based car at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) and Grandview (Pa.)
speedways last year, finishing second in both the Short Track SuperNationals and
Freedom 76.
Per team owner Vinnie Salerno, Late
Model star Tim McCreadie of
Watertown, N.Y., will drive the Four Star Motorsports No. 4* Teo-Pro car at the
'Clash at the Can' in search of his first Penn Can victory.
Brian Weaver of Windsor, N.Y., owns eight Penn
Can track championships but has not raced regularly this season. Look for Weaver
to return to the track at Penn Can with his No. 1A in search of a big payday.
Another former Penn Can champion, Mike
Gular of Green Lane, Pa., returns to the facility where he won titles in ’07
and ’10.
New Jersey's Ryan Godown, who drove from 26th to
finish second in last year's 'Clash' and returned to win the 'King of the Can'
in October, returns this season in his self-owned No. 26 Troyer car. "How can I
not like the place?" Godown said of his plans to
attend.
Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station, N.J., heads to Penn Can on the heels of
high-profile victories at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway ($10,000 RoC event in March)
and Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway (George Wingate Classic $4,000 on May 26) driving
Dieter Schmidt’s No. 5.
Frank Cozze, a former regular at Penn Can in
the early 1990s and winner of the 'Hot Summer Night' midweek at the facility in
'04, has returned to Modified racing this season driving for Norm Hansell in the
famed No. 357. Already a Modified winner in ‘13, the 57-year-old Wind Gap, Pa.,
driver is set for a run at 'Clash at the Can'
glory.
Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y., a three-time Mr.
DIRTcar champion, has never won at Penn Can Speedway. The 30-year-old driver of
Jeff Brownell's No. 9s would like to change that on June 11. Another Central New
York talent, Jimmy Phelps, and the
Heinke-Baldwin Racing No. 98H operation bring momentum to Penn Can after winning
the $10,000 'Victoria' at Utica-Rome (N.Y.) Speedway on Memorial
Day.
Stewart Friesen returns to the seat of Tadd Parks'
No. 1 for the '13 special events at Penn Can, having run the No. 85 cars for
Marty Burdick last year. Friesen, who drives Parks' cars at Fonda (N.Y.)
Speedway, has enjoyed Penn Can success with Parks including victories in the
'Hot Summer Night' ('10) and 'King of the Can' ('11)
events.
Also of Fonda Speedway notoriety is
Elmo Reckner, who will make his
second Penn Can appearance at the 'Clash at the Can' event.
From the Accord (N.Y.) Speedway
area, young Danny Tyler of
Cottekill, N.Y., and Jerry Higbie
Jr. of Newburgh, N.Y., are set to contend. Tyler finished second in the '11
'Clash' event to Billy Decker. Higbie, a
noted fabricator and chassis builder, brings Gary Mann's No. 55 HigFab chassis
to Penn Can.
Local drivers are typically a force
in the 'Clash at the Can' and '13 will be no different. Among the Penn Can-area
drivers looking to contend are '12 track champion Joey Grammes of Lehighton, Pa., '11
title winner Kevin Hartnett of
Barto, Pa., the father and son tandem of Mike and Joey Colsten of Binghamton,
N.Y., and rapidly improving Nick
Rochinski of Dickson City, Pa.
Fans will not want to miss the
field of cars assembling for the Penn Can 'Clash'
event!
On Tuesday, June 11, Penn Can gates
will open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30
p.m.
Adult grandstand admission is $22
for Adults, $20 for Seniors (ages 62 and up), $10 for Students (Ages 13-17) and
Kids 12 and under are FREE. Pit
admission is $30 with any track or series license and $35 without a track or
series license.
Despite the purse boost and
addition of Crate 602 Sportsman, prices did not increase from
2012!
A commemorative souvenir program
book - 28 pages with a full color center spread - and eye-catching event apparel
from Bob Hilbert Sportswear will be on sale. A 'Clash Combo Pack' will be
offered to include a tee-shirt and a program for $20.
Modified racers are reminded there
is a Race of Champions pre-entry fee of $15 in advance or $20 on race night.
Entry forms are available online at www.rocdirt.com or www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
Complete race information and rules
are on the web at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
BD Motorsports Media LLC returns to
Penn Can in October to co-promote the 'King of the Can' 14th annual Modified
event on Friday, Oct. 18, headlined by a 50-lap main paying $5,014 to win and
