VON DOHREN 3 FOR 3 IN $3,000 EVENTS, UMBENHAUER WINS 3rd OF YEAR IN
SPORTSMAN, BERZOWSKI GRABS 4th WIN IN ROADRUNNERS, LORD & PEPE WIN 305 AND
600 MAINS
MINERSVILLE, PA - JUNE 1st, 2013
The pits were bursting
at the seams on Friday, as a staggering 138 cars signed in to do battle at Big
Diamond Speedway on a hot and steamy evening.
First on the agenda were
the ZY Pyrotechnics 358 Modifieds. Current point leader Craig Von Dohren
continued the torrid start to his 2013 campaign, winning his 3rd feature event
of the season. Ironically, all three victories have been in extra distance, 30
lap, $3,000 to win events.
Craig Whitmoyer bolted into the lead at the
start of the event from his pole starting spot, followed closely by Kevin Smith
from spot number three. The first half of the event saw Whitmoyer and Smith
exchange the top spot several times, all while 9th starting Von Dohren
meticulously worked his way to the front. One lap after the halfway signal was
given to the field, Von Dohren made his move past Smith and into the top spot.
Behind Von Dohren, Meme Desantis and Doug Manmiller all of a sudden made their
presence known, and began an epic battle with Tim Buckwalter for the 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th positions. These three drivers were definitely the show over the last
half of the race, while Von Dohren checked out to his 3rd win of the season.
Desantis was able to come home 2nd, with Manmiller, Buckwalter, and 25th
starting Billy Pauch Jr. rounding out the top five. Jeff Strunk, Kevin Smith,
Craig Whitmoyer, Andy Burkhart, and Kevin Albert Jr. completed the top ten.
Heat races were won by Dan Hineline, whose car failed to fire at the start of
the feature, Desantis, and Von Dohren.
In the Sportsman 20 lap main
event, Doug Hendricks led from his pole starting spot, followed closely by Billy
Moyer Jr. These two drivers ran neck and neck the first few laps, each holding
the lead at numerous times. Right before the midway point of the event, Kevin
Beach Jr. bolted into the lead coming off of turn two, followed closely by Jared
Umbenhauer. Beach continued to lead until a caution on lap 14. During this
caution, Beach dashed into the pit area, victim of a flat tire due to contact
with another car earlier in the event. This handed the lead over to Umbenhauer,
who never faltered over the final six laps and went on to score his third
victory of the season at Big Diamond Speedway. Billy Moyer Jr. continued the
great start to his season by coming home second, followed by Hendricks, Mike
Lisowski, and Corey Renninger. Wayne Witmer, Ray Woodall Jr., Colt Harris,
Robin Schultz, and Tim Fitzpatrick rounded out the top ten. Heat races were won
by Umbernhauer and Moyer Jr.
Marc Berzowski raced to his forth win of the
season in the Roadrunner division, grabbing the lead from Shon Elk near the
halfway point of the event and never looking back. Elk held on for his best
finish of the season, coming home second, followed by Jim Kost, Tim Spesak, and
Chris Holland. Terry Kramer Jr., Kris Ney, new high school graduate Kyle
Killian, Joe Kavanaugh, and Tim Fitzpatriack Jr. rounded out the top ten. Heat
races were won by Jeremy Becker and Elk.
Joe Lord was able to score the
victory in the TSRS 305 20 lap Sprint feature, while Jonathan Pepe was
victorious is the 600cc Modified event.
The entire evenings events were
sponsored by Ken's Tire Company.
Racing returns to Big Diamond Speedway
next Friday, June 7th, with what is sure to be one of the craziest events of the
season. The ZY Pyrotechnics 358 Modifieds and USS Achey Sportsman will be on
the card with their normal 25 and 20 lap feature events, along with the fan
favorite Savage 61 Roadrunners competing in the Crazy 8's - four 8 lap feature
events. Each 8 lap feature for the Roadrunners will be a full, points paying
event. The first feature will be lined up by normal handicapping procedures.
The 2nd, 3rd and 4th feature events will be lined up via an invert number, drawn
by the previous feature winner. The invert will be either 2, 4, 6, or 8. The
point standing are sure to look a lot different once the night is over. First
heat hits the track at 8:15 PM.
The following week on Friday, June 14th,
Big Diamond Speedway and event sponsor USS Achey present the first ever Andy
Fayash Jr. Memorial race for Sportsman. This race, run in memory of long time
Big Diamond competitor Andy Fayash Jr. will be 45 laps in distance, paying
$1,570 to win and $157 to take the green. Lap money and other awards valued at
more then $1,500 have already been collected for this event, with even more
expected by that evening. As of this moment, if one driver were lucky enough to
lead every lap, they would go home with more than $2,131 in cash and other
awards. Extra cash awards are already in place for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th,
11th, 15th, and 17th place finishing cars. Also on the card that night are the
Modifieds, Roadrunners, and Street Stocks.
Other exciting events coming
up soon at Big Diamond Speedway include the PA Sprint Speedweek show for 410
Sprint Cars on Sunday June 30th, the 33rd annual Georgie Stevenson Memorial race
for 358 Modifieds on July 5th, and the first ever FANdemonium event on July
12th. FANdemonium is a night where everyone; yes everyone, gets into the
grandstands for free. Should be a packed house that night for this wonderful
promotional event.
